Lesson 1
A person's self-concept is their understanding of who they are and what makes them
unique. This can include the physical self, the social self, the competent self and the inner, or
psychological, self. Meanwhile, a person's self-understanding is about knowing what motivates
his or her actions.
SELF-CONCEPT
Self-concept is an individual’s perception of self and what makes each individual unique.
One’s mental image of self.
Positive and negative self-assessment in the physical, mental , emotional and functional
dimensions change over time.
Self-concept affects one’s ability to function and
Greatly influence health status.
Self-knowledge – Who am I?
But what exactly goes into a person's self-concept? There are many aspects of yourself
that can make up who you are and who you believe yourself to be. Among them are:
The physical self - refers to the body, is the concrete dimension, the tangible aspect of
the person that can be directly observed and examined.
The social self - has several foundations, including socialization by family members and
other important people. Reflected self-appraisals, our beliefs about what others think of
us, help us gain self-knowledge.
The competent self - refer to perceived ability in subject areas as a whole.
Competence is the ability of a person to provide for their basic needs.

COMPONENTS OF SELF-CONCEPT
Self- Identity – personal Identity is what sets one person apart as a unique individual.
→ Identity includes a person’s name, gender, ethnic identity, family status,
occupation and roles.
→ One’s personal Identity begins to develop during childhood and is constantly
modified and reinforced throughout life.
Body Image – is an attitude about one’s physical attributes and characteristics,
appearance and performance.
→ Body image is dynamic because any change in body structure and function,
including changes due to growth and development may affect it.
Self-esteem – is the judgement of personal performance compared with the ideal self.
o Is derived from giving and receiving love, and being respected by others.
Role performance
Role – refers to a set of expectations and expected behavior that are determined by
familial, cultural and social norms.
The level of self-esteem is dependent upon the self-perception of the adequate role performance
in the various social roles.
