Numeracy Test Synthesis

The document summarizes numeracy test results for Grade 7 students in the Samar region of the Philippines for the 2021-2022 school year. It shows that: 1) In the first quarter, no students were highly numerate, 15 were moderately numerate, and 13 were non-numerate. 2) By the fourth quarter, 7 students were highly numerate, 25 were moderately numerate, and 13 remained non-numerate. 3) Overall, numeracy levels increased from the first to fourth quarter, with more students becoming moderately numerate and some becoming highly numerate. However, more work is still needed to improve numeracy, as over 30% of students remained non-num

Learners Numeracy Test Performance
Of Grade 9- COURTESY
School Year 2021-2022

I. Rationale

The goal of the Department of Education is to create numerate students who can use
their mathematical knowledge for a variety of tasks. Given this, it is essential to emphasize
the incorporation of critical thinking in both the development and design of assessment tools
as well as in teaching.

It is crucial to gauge learners' degree of mathematical proficiency because their

numeracy abilities serve as the cornerstone for absorbing mathematical competences across
grade levels. This is important in determining how prepared students are to understand
mathematical ideas.

The previous two academic years, however, were completely different for both the
teachers and the students. The teachers were compelled to use blended learning as a
substitute approach to carry on teaching in the face of the pupils' confinement to their
homes.

II. Comparative Numeracy Test Results

a. First Quarter Numeracy Test Result

SUMMARY ON NUMERACY PROFILE

E L NUMERATE Y NUMERATE L
LEVEL S NUMERATES S
Mal Femal

The table revealed that there were 76 out of the 196 enrolled learners assessed in the
first quarter of the school year. No one is highly numerate, 24, or 31.58%, were moderately
numerate, and 52, or 68.42%, were non-numerates. These non-numerates were the main
focus of the intervention conducted by the teachers.
b. Fourth Quarter Numeracy Test Result

c. A total of 45 learners took the numeracy test in the fourth quarter, with 7 or
3.84% being highly numerate, 115 or 63.19 % being moderately numerate, and
60 or 32.97% non-numerates.

d. Numeracy Test Comparative Results

NUMERACY TEST COMPARATIVE RESULTS

School Year 2021-2022
First Fourth
Indicators Quarter Quarter
Highly Numerates 1 7
Moderately Numerates 15 25
Non-Numerates 13 13
III. Total 29 45 Conclusion
The following
are the significant findings revealed by the results of the conducted numeracy
tests for the school year 2021-2022

1. Highly Numerates increased by 7 or 3.84% from 0 to 7.

2. An increase of 91 Moderately Numerates was observed on the fourth
quarter results of the test. From 42 moderately numerates, it increased to
115 based on the results of the Fourth Quarter Numeracy test results. It
means that out of 196 enrolled learners, 58.67% are moderately
numerates.
3. The number of Non-numerates decreased from 68.42% during the first
quarter to 32.97 in fourth quarter which means that the number of non-
numerates decreased. However, this also means that there still 60 non-
numerates that need to be given due attention on the next school year.
4. The results also showed a significant increase in the number of learners
who took the test. There were only 76 takers who took the test in the first
quarter, and that number increased to 182 takers during the fourth
quarter assessment. This is due to the difficulties and challenges brought
about by the distance learning modality.
The result of the assessment may have reflected significant increases and
decreases in as much as the indicators of numerical readiness are concerned.
However, one thing remains to be a primordial consideration on the part of the
teachers and the school leaders; they should put more emphasis on the
enhancement of the learners’ numerical skills.
