Practice Problems With Solutions

Here are the key steps to solve this problem: 1) Given: Three phase supply voltage V = 400 V, Frequency f = 50 Hz 2) To calculate line current: Total load = 100 kW Power factor = 0.8 lagging Total load power (S) = Load (kW) / Power factor = 100 kW / 0.8 = 125 kVA Line current (I) = Total load power (S) / Line voltage (V) = 125 kVA / 400 V = 312.5 A 3) Current in each phase: Since the load is balanced, current in each phase = Line current / √3 = 312.5 A / √

Ques : A set of 3 equal resistors, each of value R x connected in star across RYB
of given below figure consumes the same power as the unbalanced delta
connected load is shown. Find the value of Rx in ohms.
Note: Everywhere, the unit of voltage is volt, and of resistance/impedance is ohm
Also, j denotes the imaginary square root of -1 called “iota”

1. For a load of 200 kVA connevted to 11kV, 50 Hz line and consumes power with a pf of 0.85 lagging.
In order to increase the pf to 0.9 lag what should be the reactive power compensation needed? If
capacitor is used for reactive power compensation in above problem, then what would be the value
of capacitance for the required compensator

Solution:

(a) Given:
V = 11, 000 V, ω = 100π rad/s, S = 200 kVA (Active Power), pf1 = 0.85 lag, pf2 = 0.9 lag

(b) Results Used:

∆Q = P (tanϕ1 − tanϕ2 )
tanϕ = P/Q
C = V∆Q

(c) The Active power delivered to the load would be: P = Scosϕ1
P = 200*0.85 kW = 170 kW
For the lag to be 0.9,
∆Q = 170 ∗ (tan(arccos(pf )1 ) − tan(arccos(pf )2 ))
∆Q = 170 ∗ 0.13542 ∆Q = 23.02 kVAR...Reactive power compensation

(d) To design the Capacitior Bank for Reactive power compenstaion, we’ll add a capacitor greater
than this value in parallel to the load,

∆Q 23.02∗1000
C= V 2ω
= (11,000)2 ∗100π
= 0.6µF (Approx)
