Background of the study
Stress is how we react when we encounter a lot of task or under pressure that might be
threatening. This is usually happens in a situation that we don’t feel we can manage or control.
For example a responsibilities of a problem solving in mathematics that struggling to manage
and solve. Stress can cause mental health problems or it becomes mental anxiety that leads the
students to feel pressure in solving mathematics. According to the National Library of Medicine
there are two main types of stress. Acute stress which is a short term stress that goes quickly and
the chronic stress that lasts for longer period of time.
According to N. Suren and M.A. Kandemir (2020) in their research mathematics anxiety,
an emotional factor found in the literature why the students do not like the mathematics. (Shen,
2009). Therefore overcoming mathematics anxiety that cause by the stress can lead for the
students to like solving mathematical problems and important thing to grow the students. By
understanding, recognizing, controlling and dealing with mathematics anxiety (Boaler, 2008).
The students first reaction, they do not like mathematics as their thinking it is difficult course and
it causes their stress in problem solving in mathematics.
Mathematics anxiety that causes by the mental stress always start in elementary and
secondary level. (E. Zakaria and N.M. Nordin, 2008) according to their surveyed students had
their first negative experience in mathematics as early as grade 3 or 4. Therefore, this become the
cause why the students feel that they don’t like mathematics up until their college life. (E.
Zakaria and N.M. Nordin, 2008). Mathematical anxiety is an emotional reaction that has indirect
effects with poor performance of the students in their studies. This also the sense of fear that the
people feel when they faced with the need to perform task in their schools that daily need to
complete. (Suren and M.A. Kandemir, 2020).
Mathematics students can seriously hamper their performance by being nervous and
insecure towards mathematics. And most of the mathematics teachers agree that the students who
always react the mathematics is a difficult subject that cause their stress and become
mathematics anxiety that affects their performance in school, and they will have negative
learning in mathematics. (P. Mutodi and H. Ngirande, 2014). Therefore, the students will have
negative reaction in mathematics that cause negative performance of the students.
Mathematics education in the Philippines is one of the priority concerns of the
Department of Education (DepEd). Mathematics and science content area are classified as the
most difficult to understand by elementary and secondary grade level students. The Philippines
has their priority in mathematics. (O. Imam, M. Abas, and H. Jamil, 2013). The quality of
mathematics instruction os one of the issues in some countries including the Philippines. In fact,
Pilipino students has their low performance in some discipline including mathematics that is
annually conducted through National Achievement Test. (M. Dimasindel, 2015).
This research, investigating to what extent affects the performance of the students by the
mental stress of the students. Since, mathematics if on of the important thing in the Philippines.
(M. Dimasindel, 2015). And the mental stress of the students in problem solving in mathematics
to be recognize, control by the teachers in order for the students to prevent their stress in
mathematics that causes mathematics anxiety with result of low performance of the students.
Questionnaire
1. What are the factors that causes mental stress of the students?
2. Level of the performance of the students in mathematics.
3. To what extent affects the performance of the students in mathematics by the mental
stress?
4. Is significant relationship between mental stress and the performance in mathematics?
