DIRECTIVE TERMS - Definitions

‘examine’, it is asking you to note how some things are more important than others
Describe give a detailed account using information from the data supplied
Discuss investigate or examine (sift and debate) the arguments, and reasons for and
against, the subject being discussed, while indicating your position with reasons
Evaluate this means that you are to weigh up and interpret the statement. In doing so, you
need to consider each aspect referred to in the statement, and comment to what
degree you feel this is so (based on the examples/evidence you bring up to
support your ideas.
Examine this combines ‘describe’ and ‘explain’ tasks. In examining a topic, you need to both
state what it is about and provide reasons for it – show your understanding
Justify in support of your judgement (opinion) on a question, you draw on evidence from
the information, or from your previous studies
