: / j j j J i 1 1 \ I ! : Chapter 9: Participating in Groups When Joining a Group to Hang Out and Talk, Use the SLOW APPROACH! Sometimes a person comes up to a group of other people and just starts talking. The person POUNCES on or bombards the people in the group with questions or comments, The others may feel overwhelmed or irritated and may even snap in response (show frustration with words), Here's whet happens in the POUNCE: You wall up tosomeone and you start talking to him without first showing you're thinking about him or paying attention wwhat he is saying or who he is saying it to. & : When we use the SLOW APPROACH, we show others we're thinking about them. They'll then respond more positively to us. Here’s how to do the SLOW APPROACH: Wien you approach someone, you first need to THINK about that person. You need to LOOX at the person and silently ask yourself, “What is she doing right now? Is this a good time to talk with her?” If you decide that this is @ good time to talk with her, you can then move your body closer ty her to set up your physical presence (but not 10 close). You need to keep looking at the persor: and thinking about her until she looks back st you. That tells you she's ready to listen. Then, finally, you add your words. the | How do you know if people think you Pounce or do low Approucl? One of the most difficult things we do as communicators istry to observe how people perceive uss we attempt to hang out or talk to them. Pay attention: to how others see your behavior. Do they see you as Pouncing oF using the Slow Approach? When observing how people see you in their own eys, realize that how you wish you are perceived may not be how you are actually perceived. Work at obs“rving how others observe you. This isan important thing to be able todo because then you can make some smart guesses about how peopie feel about you and why And remember...this is something that's difficult for everyone to do! Here are some tips for how to use the Slow Approach: 1. Think about the person by looking at him and thinking about him: What is he doing? Is this a good time| to talk with him? If you're unsure, ask if this isa good time to talk. 2, Move your body into position. 3. Look at the person: How soon should you start to look at him? ANSWER: From before you start talking] tovhim and then on and off until after you “close the conversation” with him. 1 4, Add your own thoughts when they relate to what comeone else Is saying, Try to avoid adding thoughis| that don't seem to connect to what other peonle are discussing | 5 Close the conversation by saying something like "I gotta go,” “See ya later.” or “Bye.” Vocial Thinking* Thinksheets for Tweens and Teens © 201! This is almost always wher there's an emergency to report or you have quickly joined a group to give someone a quick message. I caught myself Pouncing too often,Chapter 9: Participating in Groups Hangivig Out: Being Perceived as Friendly, Cooperative, and Approachable Friendly people are those who are perceived to work wcll with other people, People like it when other people work well with them. Good players, folks who are perceived as cooperative, don't just play well during sports or other games they also work well with other people at hotne, in the classroom during group project time, or even while waiting their turn at thelr desk. People who hang out well carigtand in a group with others and not have the focus. of attention be all about them all of th: time. When we're considered to be friendly or “approachable,” the reward is that people enjoy spending time with us Here are some ideas for how to be considered cooperative, approachable, friendly 1, Move your body to go where the group goes. Sometimes these are big movements like walking across the schoolyard; at other times, they're srall movements, like just moving your shoulders to stay with the group. 2. Think with your eyes. Stay alert to watching wivat people are doing, what they might be feeling, and where they might be looking! 3. Think about the people you're with. What do they want from you? How do they feel when they're in the groups How should your body be turned wher you're with them to encourage them to include you in the group? 4. Ifit’s alittle boring for you but appears to be fun for the other person, you'll stay with the group...becaus. you know that when the group is doing or talking about something you think is cool, it night be a litle bur- ing for another person. Not everyone in the group enjoys all the sarme things all the time! 5. No one knows It all! Being part of a group means not telling people everything you know, People want to work or hang out with you—not just learn irom you! Sometimes people actually get mad if someone else always tries to tell thera things. That's because they feel like the person is acting like a “know-it-all.” Being “know-it-all” is not a good thing. 6. All people keep learning to be cooperate, hang out, and be friendly across their lives! Reing “friendly” takes a lot of thinking, hanging out, and engaging in activities together to allow for practice to'get it right! Keep trying to spend some time with other kids your age. This gives you some practice time to figure out how to think about what others think and feel. It also gives them a chance to see a really good side of you! Remember, everyone is learning social participation, not just you!Chapter 9: Participating in Groups RULES for LIFE / ules for being part of ANY group: ns 1, Pay attention to the group. When things don't vurn out the way we want, we all feel any number of emotions that might include feeling frustrated, annoyed, angry, mad, sad, disappointed, stressed, furious, etc, Even when we feel this way, other members of the group still expect certain behaviors from us. Behaviors that are EXPECTED, even if you're upset, include: + Asad face + Words of disappointment like “darn” or “shout” + Asteady voice that is not loud ‘A chance to explain. (You may get a chance to explain why you feel upset. At other times, you don't need to explain; it’s just what you have to put up with, Fo- exemple, if someone else gets to go frst, you don't need to ifyou lost your favorite pen, you may need to explain this because no one explain why you're upset.
