MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS
• “Mechanical Properties” are the properties that determine
the response of engineering materials to applied forces.
• Which material would you pick to cross this cliff?

Wood? Steel?

MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS
• “Mechanical Properties” are the properties that determine
the response of engineering materials to applied forces.
• Which material would you pick to cross this cliff?
• How much deformation will take place when a certain
amount of load is applied?
– Mechanical properties of that material.
– The cross-sectional properties of that load carrying member.

• Even though both rods have the
same cross-sectional properties,
when subjected to the same loads,

F the response of steel is different

than the response of aluminum.
• The mechanical properties of steel
and aluminum are different.

MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS
• Some materials break easily when compared to the others that
can show large deformations before failure!

MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS
• The response of materials to applied forces will depend on
– the type of bonding,
– the structural arrangement of atoms or molecules,
– the type and number of imperfections which are always present in solids.
MODULUS
• Therefore, mechanical properties are veryOF ELASTICITY
sensitive to
manufacturing processes and operations.
• Moreover, the type of loading (compression/tension etc.) and the
mode of load application (static/dynamic) may change the
behavior of a material to a greater degree than the chemical
composition, heat treatment or temperature.

• But before we go further we have to introduce some basic
concepts:
• FORCE FORCE STRESS
– External
– Internal
• STRESS
– Normal DEFORMATION STRAIN
– Shear
