Assignment 10

3u Math A&A HL
Kinematics and Integration

1. Use a calculator

A particle P, moves in a straight line with position relative to the origin O given by
s (t ) = 2t 3 - 9t 2 + 12t - 5 , where t is the time in seconds (t ≥0).

(a) Find expressions for the velocity and acceleration of the particle.

(b) Find the initial position, velocity and acceleration.

(c) Describe the motion of the particle at time t = 2 seconds.

(d) When is the velocity negative, and when is it positive?

(e) What are the times and positions of the particle when it changes direction?

(f) Draw a motion diagram to illustrate the motion of P.

(g) When is the speed increasing?

2. This question is non-calculator.

A particle travels in a straight line with velocity 𝑣(𝑡) = 6𝑡(1 − 𝑡) m/s. Find the distance travelled
in the first two seconds of motion.

3. This is a non-calculator question!

A particle P starts from point O and moves along a straight line. The graph of its velocity,
𝑣 ms−1 after 𝑡 seconds, for 0 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 6 , is shown in the following diagram.

The graph of 𝑣 has 𝑡-intercepts when 𝑡 = 0, 2 and 4.

The function 𝑠(𝑡) represents the displacement of P from O after 𝑡 seconds.
It is known that P travels a distance of 15 metres in the first 2 seconds. It is also known that
!
𝑠(2) = 𝑠(5) and ∫" 𝑣 d𝑡 = 9.

(a) Find the value of 𝑠(4) − 𝑠(2).

(b) Find the total distance travelled in the first 5 seconds.

4. You should use a calculator with this question, but you will have to integrate!
A particle moves along a horizontal line such that at time 𝑡 seconds, 𝑡 ≥ 0, its acceleration 𝑎 is
given by 𝑎 = 2𝑡 − 1. When 𝑡 = 6 , its displacement 𝑠 from a fixed origin O is 18.25 m. When 𝑡 = 15,
its displacement from O is 922.75 m. Find an expression for 𝑠 in terms of 𝑡.

7. Find òx 2
- 2x + 3
dx (Hint: complete the square!)

8. Find ∫(1 − sin 𝑥)" 𝑑𝑥

!
9. Find the exact value of ∫#" 𝑥 sin 𝑥 𝑑𝑥

10. Calculate the exact value of ò

dx

a2
1 dx = 0.22.
11. Find the values of a > 0, such that ò a 1+ x2

(Hint: Set up an equation which you can then solve on your calculator)

12. Find the volume of the solid formed when the region bounded by the graph of
𝑦 = sin(𝑥 − 1), and the lines y = 0 and y = 1 is rotated by about the y-axis.

(Show working but use a calculator for calculating the definite integral)
13. Let f be a function defined by f(x) = x + 2 cos x, x Î [0, 2π]. The diagram below shows a
region S bound by the graph of f and the line y = x.

A and C are the points of intersection of the line y = x and the graph of f, and B is the
minimum point of f.

The region S is rotated through 2π about the x-axis to generate a solid.

(i) Write down an integral that represents the volume V of this solid and
calculate it.
