2.
Checking for understanding permeates the teaching world. If you doubt that, consider the
last lecture you heard. Whether the lecture was about chemical reactions, the great American
novel, or the causes of World War II, the person speaking most likely checked for your
understanding several times during the lecture by using such common prompts as "Any
questions?", "Did you all get that?", "Everybody understand?", or "Does that make sense?"
Rather than respond to these questions, most learners will sit quietly, and the lecturer doesn't
know whether they understand, they are too confused to answer, they think they get it or they
are too embarrassed to show their lack of understanding in front of others. Such general
questions are simply not sufficient in determining whether or not students "get it." Additionally,
students aren't always self-regulated learners. They may not be aware of what they do or do not
understand. They sometimes think they get it, when they really don't. If you doubt this, consider
how often you have heard students comment, "I thought I knew this stuff, but I bombed the
exam." Much of the checking for understanding done in schools is ineffective. Thankfully, there
are a number of ways to address the situation. We've organized this book, and the ways that
teachers can check for understanding, into larger categories, including oral language,
questioning, writing, projects and performances, tests, and schoolwide approaches. In this
chapter, we'll explore checking for understanding in terms of what it is, what it is not, and how
it links to other teaching initiatives.
Why Check for Understanding? Checking for understanding is an important step in the
teaching and learning process. The background knowledge that students bring into the
classroom influences how they understand the material you share and the lessons or learning
opportunities you provide. Unless you check for understanding, it is difficult to know exactly
what students are getting out of the lesson. In fact, checking for understanding is part of a
formative assessment system in which teachers identify learning goals, provide students
feedback, and then plan instruction based on students' errors and misconceptions. Although the
focus of this book is on strategies for checking for understanding, it is important to know how
these strategies are used to improve student achievement as part of a more comprehensive
system. Assessing your students in reading throughout the school year is important for many
reasons. Reading evaluation and reading assessments help you get to know your individual
readers and diagnose strengths and weaknesses. Assessments also provide summaries of student
learning and give information about student learning progress.
Specially, it seeks o answer the following questioins:
1. Why is it important that we know how much a grade 6 student can understand or know?
2. Why Check for Understanding?
RESPONDENTS:
THE RESPONDENTS ARE GRADE 6 PUPILS OF TALAVERA CENTRAL SCHOOL.
RESEARCH DESIGN:
I used the case study design ( stakes,1995) defines a case study as an “ empirical injury
hat investigates phenomenon within its real-life context. Especially when the bounderies
between phenomenon an context are not clearly evident. “Stake (19955:3) defines a case sudy
as “the study of the particularity and complexity ogf a single case, coming to understand its
activity within important circumtances.” In other words, the case study is way of investigating
an empirical topic by following a set of a pre-specified procedures. I used the case study
methodology because I was dealing with a single case, looking at a specific grade and specific
number of participants in a particular area and community.
STATISTICAL TOOL:
The data collection technique for this study was tough because it did not focus on just one
group but on several to complete the survey interview. The researcher requested consent from
grade 6 pupils to take part in our study. The researcher looked at how sixth-graders read.
We inquire as to how many pupils in grade 6 can read on average. Then we inquire about how
the teacher deals with pupils who are unable to read.
1. Face to face surveys will be used by the researcher to obtain data from the respondents.
Meaning, if the reponses came directly from the respondents, they will be the primary
source of information for this study.
With the rapid development of Internet technology, various new media platforms have
emerged consequently impacting many aspects of our lives The emergence of various media
and communication platforms changed the way people exchange information, turned then-
existed one-way communication into two-way communication, and laid the foundation for the
development various social media. Furthermore by the creation of a platform to share videos,
video content is getting more popular, leading the emergence of many websites that users can
share various kinds of video content. Recently, as marketing strategy has shifted to consumer-
oriented methods rather than corporate-oriented methods (Shin 2007), the importance of word
of mouth (WOM) information through social network services (SNS) has increased, and
personal sources of information have played an increasingly important role in WOM. Also,
consumers now prefer getting information from online video websites rather than from
traditional form of media like television and radio. Consumers are not only getting information
easily through video sharing platforms, but also using them as an opportunity to express
themselves through online interaction). Furthermore, consumers also establish a strong
“emotional bond” based on the emotional exchange that was previously considered possible
only in offline settings.
People create vlog and some have attracted a large number of followers, vloggers
upload videos about their personal life or reviews of product they use, therefore increasing
browsing traffic from followers and other viewers. As a result, vloggers become key opinion
leaders or important information sources on social media nowadays (Lee and Watkins 2016).
Ohanian (1990) describes attractiveness, expertise, and trustworthiness as the three attributes of
information sources. We also categorized the attributes of vloggers, who are information
sources sending information through video blogging, into three: attractiveness, expertise, and
trustworthiness. The attractiveness of the information source can again be categorized into two:
physical attractiveness and psychological attractiveness. According to previous studies, physical
attractiveness is defined as a beautiful and attractive face and a perfect body, whereas
psychological attractiveness means the extent to which consumers feel familiar with the
information source or the extent consumers perceive the information source similar to
themselves. Both types of attractiveness increase the effect of persuasive communication
between information source and recipient. In a precede study on the impact of attractiveness,
consumers are also influenced by the attractiveness of information sources, and generally, the
more attractive the information source is, the greater the acceptance of the message. Also,
physical attractiveness determine the first impression in a moment, the appearance exert
considerable influence on building human relationship. Especially, as impression formation
through SNS is a common phenomenon nowadays, the attractiveness become important factor
in SNS. The attractiveness of the information source has a positive effect on brand attitude and
purchase intention regardless of product type. In this study, we predicted that the attractiveness
of vlogger perceived by viewers after watching vlog will lead the viewer to have a positive
attitude toward information and, consequently, affect the content sharing intention and the
attitude toward the products exposed in the vlog.
The Internet is used by many people as a normal part of their career or education,
knowing how to separate excessive from normal use becomes difficult and cannot be
accomplished using simple measures such as amount of time spent online in a given period.
Most fundamental in differentiating normal from problem Internet use is the experience of
compulsion to use the net. Normal users, no matter how heavy their usage, do not need to get
online and do not neglect their occupational duties or their relationships with family and friends
to get online. Help for Internet related addiction is available from multiple sources. Anyone
concerned about serious problem Internet usage should consider consulting with a local licensed
psychologist, social worker or counselor, specifically one with experience treating addictions.
Cognitive therapy based approaches are recommendable due to their systematic and direct focus
on reducing problem use and preventing relapse, and the strong scientific support for the
approach. Marital and or family therapy approaches may be useful as well when an individual's
Internet Addiction is affecting their larger family system (such as might be the case when a
husband uses Internet-based pornography as his sole sexual outlet, leaving his wife frozen out).
More than a few books and self-help resources (such as audio tape sets) are also available for
those who want to educate themselves on the problem. Our Internet Addiction Treatment article
provides further detail.
Social networking nowadays make an important role to today technology. It’s really a
great invention of humanity that give a very big contribution to humans whether young or
elderly but as we know there is nothing perfect in the world, many young nowadays had
addicted to social networking because of its convenience and this is the symptom showed that
our society is heading to corruption.
The Effects of having social networking addiction are decrease the productivity of work and
negative physical effect on human. Addiction to social networks bring mankind to become lazy.
