Assignment no1-GIS Principles

This document contains 17 questions related to geographic information systems (GIS) principles for a class assignment. The questions cover topics such as layers in a GIS, geographic reference frameworks, GIS components, surveying and mapping fields related to GIS, metadata, spatial data representations, differences between GIS and LIS, converting documents and data to raster and vector formats, topology, relating spatial and non-spatial data, and pixel dimensions. The student is asked to work out the questions which test their understanding of fundamental GIS concepts.

Civil Eng. for Infrastructure & Water Eng. Program GIS Principles
‫جام عة الم نوف ية‬
==================================================================
Please, work out the following questions:
1. Describe the concept of layers in a geographic information system.
2. Discuss the role of a geographic reference framework in a GIS.
3. List the fundamental components of a GIS.
4. List the fields within surveying and mapping that are fundamental to the development and implementation
of GISs.
5. Discuss the importance of metadata to a GIS.
6. Name and describe the different simple spatial objects used for representing graphic data in digital form.
Which objects are used in raster format representations?
7. What are the primary differences between a GIS and a LIS?
8. How many pixels are required to convert the following documents to raster form for the conditions given:
(a) A 384-in. square map scanned at 200 dpi.
(b) A 9-in. square aerial photo scanned at 1200 dpi.
(c) An orthophoto of dimensions scanned at 300 dpi
9. Explain how data can be converted from:
(a) Vector to raster format
(b) Raster to vector format
10. For what types of data is the vector format best suited?
11. Discuss the compromising relationships between grid cell size and resolution in raster data representation.
12. Define the term topology and discuss its importance in a GIS.
13. Develop identifier and topology tables for the vector representation in figure 1

14. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using the following equipment for converting maps and other
graphic data to digital form:
(a) tablet digitizers and
(b) scanners.
15. If data were being represented in vector format, what simple spatial objects would be associated with each
of the following topological properties?
(a) Connectivity
(b) Direction
(c) Adjacency
(d) Nestedness.
16. Discuss how spatial and nonspatial data are related in a GIS.
17. What are the actual ground dimensions of a pixel for the following conditions:
(a) A 1:10,000 scale orthophoto scanned at 500 dpi?
(b) A 1:24,000 map scanned at 200 dpi?
