Module7 Math4

This mathematics module teaches students to estimate quotients of 3-4 digit dividends divided by 1-2 digit divisors. It introduces estimation strategies like rounding numbers to the highest place value before dividing or using compatible numbers. Students practice estimating quotients independently and are assessed on selecting the best estimate using rounding or compatible numbers. The goal is for students to develop the higher-level skill of conceptualizing and manipulating numbers to estimate in real-life situations.

MODULE 7 – FIRST QUARTER TOPIC: NUMBER AND NUMBER SENSE

OVERVIEW:

This module was created and written with you in mind. It is here to help
you develop your skill and master the operation involving estimating of quotient.
Use of some strategy gives you support to understand deeper the concept of
estimation.
Discussions and steps were included. Enrichment activities are
designed to aid your mastery of the lesson.
CONTENT STANDARDS: The learner…
Demonstrates understanding of whole numbers up to 100,000.
Demonstrates understanding of multiplication and division of whole numbers including money.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: The learner…
rounds numbers to the nearest thousand and ten thousand.
is able to apply multiplication and division of whole numbers including money in mathematical
problems and real-life situations.
MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCIES: The learner…
estimates the quotient of 3- to 4-digit dividends by 1- to 2-digit divisors with reasonable
results. (M4NS-Ig-55.2)

LESSON 1: Number and Number Sense

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
 estimate the quotient of 3-to 4-digit dividend
by 1-to2-digit divisor.

INTRODUCTION
In real life, estimation is part of our everyday experience. Estimation is a
higher-level skill that you need to be able to conceptualize and mentally
manipulate numbers. Instead of just adding or subtracting columns, you have to
analyze each number in the problem and make a determination as to round up
or down depending on that “magic number” which is 5. Then the extra challenge
is whether to round to the nearest one, ten, hundred or thousand.
As you walk around and live your life, imagine if you could easily estimate, which
item is the best value for money, how many people are in a room or pages in a
book you’re reading.

What’s In

Let’s try. Using this number line find out where the number is closer.
Where is 4 closer?
LESSON PROPER

DISCUSSION 1

Mr. Alcala is a computer encoder of Data Quick office. He can type 6 832
words in 48 minutes to meet the deadline. About how many words can he type
in a minute?

What can you say about Mr. Alcala?

What character trait does he possess in our story problem?

How to Estimate the Quotient?

To solve the problem follow these steps:

The number sentence is

Step 1: Round the dividend and the divisor to their highest place value.

Step 2: Cancel as many zeroes in the dividend as there in the divisor.

Step 3: Divide

There are times that the estimated answer is too large or small if we round both
the dividend and the divisor to its highest place value. We can use compatible
numbers to estimate quotients.

Step 1: Think of compatible number that you can exactly divide 9 without
rounding the dividend.
Step 2: Divide

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY 1

A. Round the divisor or dividend to the highest value. Then find the estimated
quotient.

1. 6 358 ÷ 32 = _______÷ _______ = ___

2. 486 ÷ 23 =
_______÷ _______ = ___

3. 7 631 ÷ 42 = _______÷ _______ = ___

4. 35 ÷ 12 = _______÷ _______ = ___

_______÷ _______ = ___

5. 2 564 ÷ 62 =

B. Find the estimated quotient using compatible number

C. Estimating is an educated _______. To complete the sentence, match the
letter of each estimated quotient. Round to the highest value or use compatible
number.

_________1. 4 593 ÷ 49 E. 200

_________2. 5 632 ÷ 54 S. 300

_________3. 6 3 64 ÷ 28 U. 120

_________4. 9 245 ÷ 25 S. 400

_________5. 8 139 ÷ 24 G. 100

D. Read and analyze each problem.

1. Which is better buy? A box of ballpen at PhP 65 or 1 ballpen at PhP10

each? Why?

2. Which will you buy. 1 kilogram of powdered milk at

Php 320 or 6 pcs small packs of 55 grams of the same brand at Php108?
Why?

▪ To estimate quotient round the dividend and divisor to

the highest place value then divide
▪ To estimate quotient with reasonable answer, use
compatible number for the dividend to divide.
