Risk & Protective Factors of
1 Intentional Injuries
In the previous lesson, you learned the meaning of injuries and their two
classifications: intentional and unintentional injuries. You were also able to differentiate
between these two classifications.
For this lesson, you will analyze the reasons why abuse and violent acts are
committed and how to prevent them from happening.

What is It
RISK FACTORS
The term “intentional” is used to refer to injuries resulting from purposeful
human action, whether directed at oneself or others.
2. Relationship factors (with family and peers) – risk factors include unpleasant
relationship with parents that could stem from negligence or violence-driven
upbringing, siblings or any immediate family member and interaction with peers
having the same dilemma.
5
Knowing the correct self-defense strategy, which includes physical, mental, and
emotional assertiveness, is an important factor to avoid being a victim of attack and
violence. These are the following:
1. Self-esteem – getting the kind of self-assurance that makes you less likely
to be picked as an easy target.
2. Assertiveness – a physical assault can be avoided by displaying bold and
confident conduct, such as speaking with confidence. Since many attackers
prefer easy victims who can be overpowered easily, saying aggressively
phrases like "Leave me alone" can catch an attacker off guard before he or
she can react.
3. Body language – having direct eye contact and speaking loudly are two
acts that will send the message to the perpetrator that you are aware of how
to protect yourself and will not be easily victimized.
4. Intuition – one essential rule is that if you sense danger or that something
is wrong or about to happen, you must flee immediately.
5. A self-protective attitude – most importantly, you must recognize that you
are deserving of respect and that you have a right to it.
