Tutorial 1

1. The document discusses using Maclaurin series expansions to estimate the value of cos(π/3). Terms are added one at a time and the true and approximate percent relative errors are calculated until the error is below 2 significant figures. 2. It also discusses using zero- through third-order Taylor series expansions to predict the value of f(3) for the function f(x) = 25x3 - 6x2 + 7x - 88 at the base point x = 1, and calculating the true percent relative error for each approximation. 3. The goal is to use series expansions and iterative approximations to estimate values and calculate errors at each step, adding terms until a

Tutorial Chapter 1 '

1. The Maclaurin series expansion for cos x is

x2 x4 x6 x8
cos x = 1 + + ···
2 4! 6! 8!
Starting with the simplest version, cos x = 1, add terms one at a time to estimate

:
cos(⇡/3). After each new term is added, compute the true and approximate percent
relative errors. Use your pocket calculator to determine the true value. Add terms
until the absolute value of the approximate error estimate falls below an error criterion
conforming to two significant figures.

2. The Taylor series expansion is given by

f 00 (xi ) 2 f 000 (xi ) 3 f (n) (xi ) 2

f (xi+1 ) ⇡ f (xi ) + f 0 (xi )h + h + h + ··· + h.
2! 3! n!
Use zero- through third-order Taylor series expansions to predict f (3) for

f (x) = 25x3 6x2 + 7x 88

using a base point at x = 1. Compute the true percent relative error for each approxi-
mation.
