Chapter One (Introduction)

This document provides an overview of product development processes and organizations. It discusses key concepts like the generic six-phase product development process, characteristics of successful product development, composition of product development teams, and challenges faced. Adaptations of the generic process are outlined for different product types like market-pull, technology-push, and customized products. Product development organizations and process flows are also summarized.

Chapter one
1. INTRODUCTION
Product design and Development
what is product?
“product is something sold by an enterprise to its
customers.”
product development?
“a product development is a set of activities
beginning with perception of a market opportunity
ending in the production, sale and delivery of a
product.”
2
Characteristics of a Successful product
development
What is success for profit organization.
How can we measure profitability?
Five dimensions used to measure the performance of a
product development effort are:
Product quality
Product cost
Development time
Development cost
Development capability
3
Who designs and develops a product?
 Product development is an interdisciplinary
activity.
 Marketing (interaction b/n the firm and its
customers).
 Design (define the physical form of the
product).
 Manufacturing (designing, operating and/or
coordination of production system).

4
Product Development team
 Project team: a collection of individuals
developing a product.
 Project team can have core team and
extended team.
 Core team is usually small in number.

5

an electromechanical product of modest complexity
6
Duration and cost of product development
 Less than 1 year----------very few products.
 Many---------- from 3 to 5 years.
 Some take as long as 10 years.
 Development cost is directly related to
 Number of peoples involved in the project tem
 Duration of the project.
 Fixed costs (tooling and production facility)

7
The Challenges of Product Development
 Trade-offs
 Dynamics
 Details
 Time pressure
 Economics
 Creation
 Satisfaction of societal and individual needs
 Time delivery
 Team spirit

8
Organizational realities
 Lack of empowerment of the team.
 Functional allegiances transcending project
goals.
 Inadequate resources.
 Lack of cross functional representations in
the project teams.

9
2. Development processes and
organizations

• A process is a sequence of steps that transforms a

set of inputs into a set of outputs.
• A product development process is the sequence of
steps or activities that an enterprise employs to
conceive, design and commercialize a product.

10
Advantages of a well defined development
process
 quality assurance
 Coordination
 Planning
 Management
 Improvement
The generic product development process consists of six
phases.

11
The generic product development process consists of six
phases.

12
The six generic product development
processes
1. Planning
2. Concept development
3. System level design
4. Detail design
5. Testing and refinement
6. Production ramp-up

13
1. Planning
 “Phase zero”
 Precedes project approval & launch of actual
product development.
 Opportunity identification
 Assessment of technology development
 Market objectives
 Project mission statement. (output)

14
2. Concept development

 Need of target market is identified.

 Alternative product concepts are generated and
evaluated.
 Further development of one or more concepts.
“Concept is a description of the form, function and
features of a product.”

15
3. System level design Involves

 Definition of product architecture.

 Decomposition of a product into subsystems and
components.
 preliminary analysis of components.

16
4. Detail Design Involves:

 Complete specification of the geometry, material

and tolerances of mating parts.
 Identification of standard parts to be purchased.
NB. The issue of material selection, production cost
and robust performance are finalized at this phase.

17
5. Testing and refinement
Development of
 Early stage (alpha) prototype.
 Later (beta) prototypes.

6. Production ramp-up
 Product is made using the intended production
system.

18
Concept Development : the front-end
process
It involves the following activities:
 Identifying customer needs.
 Establishing target specification.
 Concept generation.
 Concept selection.
 Concept testing.
 Setting final specification.
 Project planning.
 Economic analysis.
 Benchmarking competitive products.
 Modeling and prototyping.
19
Adapting the Generic Product
Development Process
 Market- pull product.
 Technology push products.
 Platform products.
 Process intensive products.
 Customized products.
 High risk products.
 Quick build products and
 Complex systems.
