TUTORIAL 2
1. For each of the bar elements shown in Figure T2.1, evaluate the global stiffness
matrix. Let E = 210 GPa, A = 10 x 10 -4 m2, and L = 3 m for each element

2. For the bar element shown in Figure T2.2, the global displacements have been
determined to be d1x = 0 mm, d1y = 2.5 mm, d2x = 5.0 mm, and d2y = 3.0 mm. Determine
the local displacements at ends of the bar. Let E = 210 GPa, A = 10 x 10 -4 m2, and L = 3
m for each element.

3. Determine the nodal deflections, stresses in members and reactions at supports for
the three bar truss shown in Figure T2.3.

4. For the two bar truss shown in Figure T2.4, determine the displacements at node 1 and the
stresses in each member. Show the deformed configuration.

5. For the plane trusses shown in Figure T2.5, determine the horizontal and vertical
displacements of node 1 and the stresses in each element. All the elements have E =
70 GPa and A = 4 x 10-4 m2.

6. For the plane truss shown in Figure T2.6, determine the nodal displacements, the
element forces and stresses, and the support reactions. All elements have E =70 GPa
and A = 3.0 x 104 m2. Verify force equilibrium at nodes 2 and 4. Use symmetry in your
model.

7. For the plane trusses supported by the spring at node 1 in Figure T2.7 (a) and (b),
determine the nodal displacements and the stresses in each element. Let E = 210
GPa and A = 5.0 x 104 m2 for both truss elements.
8. Figure T2.8 shows a two-member plane truss supported by a linearly elastic spring.
The truss members are of a solid circular cross section having d = 20 mm and E = 80
GPa. The linear spring has stiffness constant 50 N/mm. a. Calculate the global
displacements of the unconstrained node.

9. For the two bar truss shown in Figure T2.9, determine the horizontal displacement of
node 1 and the axial force in each element. A force of P = 1000 kN is applied at node
1 while node 1 settles an amount δ = 50 mm as shown. Let E = 210 GPa and A = 6 x
10-4 m2 for each element.

10. For the space truss elements shown in Figures T2.10 – T 2.11, the global displacements
at node 2 have been determined to be d2x = 5 mm,d2y = 10 mm, and d2z = 15 mm.
Determine the displacement along the local x axis at node 2 of the elements. The
coordinates, in meters, are shown in the figures.

11. For the space trusses shown in Figure T 2.12, determine the nodal displacements and
the stresses in each element. Let E = 210 GPa and A = 10 x 10-4 m2 for all elements.
Verify force equilibrium at node 1. The coordinates of each node, in meters, are shown
in the figure. All supports are ball-and-socket joints.
