PRE – DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITY

1. Greetings Good morning class.

It’s another great day to see you again! Good morning, Ma’am.

2. Checking of All right, let’s check your attendance! Class

Attendance secretary do we have absentees for today?
Ma’am, nobody is out for today.
I’m glad to hear that you are all present.
3. Review
Before going to our next discussion, let’s see
if you really understand our previous topic. I
will be asking some questions based on our
last discussion which is circles.

First, what is a circle?

A circle is a two-dimensional figure
formed by a set of points that are at a
constant or at a fixed distance (radius)
from a fixed point (center) on the plane.
The fixed point is called the origin or
center of the circle and the fixed distance
of the points from the origin is called the
radius.

Very good! Now what are the parts of a

circle?
We have the circumference, radius of
circle, diameter, chord of a circle,
tangent, secant, arc of a circle, segment
in a circle and sector of a circle.

Very good! And finally, what is the area of a

circle?
The area of a circle refers to the amount
of space covered by the circle. It totally
depends on the length of its
radius → Area = πr2 square units.

Exactly, perfect, very good Thankyou for

sharing what you have learned.
It seems that you have fully understood
B. Engage our last topic, now we will proceed to the
next. But before we formally start our lesson,
I will show you a video clip entitled
Application of Integers in Real Life. While
watching the video, you’re going to take note
of what you have noticed in the video.
Is that clear?
Yes ma’am.

If that so, here is the video.

(The teacher will play the video)

(After the video presentation)

What can you say about the video the video? The video shows us how integers are
being used in this world.

Thank you.
Another? The video tells us that we don’t have to
hate mathematics because it is already
part of us, whether we like it or not,
math is around us.

Exactly!
We can’t deny the fact that almost all of
the students nowadays hate mathematics
a lot. But why? Though mathematics is
really part of our life. Everything we do
is part of math. When we are eating,
taking a bath or even when we travel.
There is always an integration of Yes ma’am.
mathematics. Did I make myself clear?

So, let’s have a math trick. Yes ma’am.

Do you want a math trick?

Get any piece of paper and ball pen. Write

your month number from your birthday.

For example, if your birthday is June then

your month number is 6.
Then, multiply by 5. Next, add 6.
Multiply the total by 4. Add 9.
Multiply by 5 once again. Then, add your
birth date. If you were born on the 14th, then
add 14. And last, subtract 165. Yes ma’am.

Are you done computing? The answer that I get is the month and
day that I was born.
What have you notice in the trick?

Exactly, I hope that it energized you all.

DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITY
Let’s now proceed to our discussion. Our
C. Explore topic for today is all about operations of
integers.
What is integers? Integers are all counting
numbers, it includes all the positive numbers,
negative numbers and zero, excluding
fractions.
 The counting numbers {1, 2, 3, …}
 Zero {0}
 And the negative of the counting
numbers {-1, -2, -3, ….}

Who among you have an idea what is number

line?

Ma’am it is a line that has a numbers on

it.

Yes, that’s correct.

Number Lines are the horizontal straight lines
in which the integers are placed in equal
intervals. All the numbers in a sequence can
be represented in a number line. Integers are
plotted on a number line by following basic
rules as follows: The integer 0 is plotted
exactly at the center, all the positive integers
which are greater than 0 such as 1, 2, 3... are
plotted towards the right of 0 and all the
negative integers which are lesser than 0 such
as - 1, - 2, - 3... are plotted towards the left of
0. For example, 3 is plotted towards the right
of 0 and the integer - 4 is plotted towards the
left of 0. It helps us to compare integers and
perform the operations on integers.

How to Represent Integers on Number Line?

We can easily represent them on a number

line based on positive integers, negative
integers and zero.

Zero is the center of integers on a number

line. Positive integers lie on the right side of
zero and negative integers lie on the left. See
the below figure.
(Silence)

Next is the operations of integers. Does

anyone know what are the operations of
integers?

No one has an idea? So, operations of integers

include the basic arithmetic operations which
are the addition, subtraction, multiplication
and division.

Explain In adding integers, there are rules that we

D. Explain need to be follow.

While adding the two integers with the same

sign, add the absolute values, and write down
the sum with the sign provided with the
numbers.
For example,
(+4) + (+7) = +11
(-6) + (-4) = -10

While adding two integers with different

signs, subtract the absolute values, and write
down the difference with the sign of the
number which has the largest absolute value.

For example,
(-4) + (+2) = -2
(+6) + (-4) = +2.

Let’s have more examples.

85+75 =? The answer is what? 160 Ma’am.

That’s right, how about (-17) +(-20) =?

-37 Ma’am.

Correct, how about 24+(-50)?

-26 Ma’am.

I can see that all of you know how to add

integers.
Next operation is Subtraction of Integers.
What is subtraction in your own words?
Ma’am, it is the decrease or difference of
two or more numbers.

That’s right.

While subtracting two integers, change the

sign of the second number which is being
subtracted, and follow the rules of addition.
For example,
(-7) – (+4) = (-7) + (-4) = -11
(+8) – (+3) = (+8) + (-3) = +5

Let’s have more examples.

Ma’am the answer is 3

What is 1−(−2)?

-3 Ma’am
That’s right! Next, what is −6−(−3)

1
What is −3−(−4)

Very good!

All of you are correct. I guess you already

know how to solve subtracting integers.
Now Let’s go to the two operations on
integers which are Multiplication and
Division.

We will discuss it both because they have the

same rules that we need to be follow.

RULE 1: The product/ quotient of a positive

integer and a negative integer is negative.

RULE 2: The product/ quotient of two

positive integers is positive.

RULE 3: The product/ quotient of two

negative integers is positive.
For rule number 1. (6) (–6) = – 36
(6) ÷ (–6) = –1

For rule number 2. (7)(8) =56

(6) ÷ (2) =3

For rule number 3. (–9) (–6) =54

(–8) ÷ (–4) = 2 Yes, Ma’am

Are we clear about these examples?

Yes, Ma’am
Did you understand multiplication and
division of integers?

Alright! I guess you know how to perform the

4 operations on integers. Am I right?

POST – DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITY

Now class, it is now your turn to determine or
E. Elaborate to solve the operations of integers.

So, if you add -2 and -3, what would be the

answer? Please solve it on the board and
explain your answer.

(Draws it on the board)

Addition operations of negative integers.

Here the first number is -2, and the
second number is -3; both are negative.
Locate -2 on a number line. Then
moving 3 places to the left will give -5.

Very good!
The next question is, what would be the
answer if you subtract 5 from 2? Please solve
it on the board and explain your answer. Use
the number line also.
(Draws it on the board)

The first number is 2, and the second

number is 5; both are positive. First,
locate 2 on a number line. Then moving

like what your 2 classmates did earlier, solve
it on the board and explain your answer.

The answer is 15. We multiply the absolute

values of the two numbers.
Since we are multiplying integers having the

G. Extend A. Solve each of the example below, paying attention to the operation involved.

B. Have also an advance reading about applying the operation of integers in problem
solving. Try solving the following.
1. A submarine was situated 800 feet below sea level. If it ascends 250 feet, what is its
new position?
2. In Buffalo, New York, the temperature was -14°F in the morning. If the temperature
dropped 7°F, what is the temperature now?
3. Mt. Everest, the highest elevation in Asia, is 29,028 feet above sea level. The Dead
Sea, the lowest elevation, is 1,312 feet below sea level. What is the difference between
these two elevations?
