AUGUST 9, 2011

NEXT WEEKS MEETING August 16, 2011 10:00 AM BRUNCH MEETING SODA CENTER 12:30 ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT MORAGA CC Greeter and Thought for the Day: Kurt Knauer

Homes graduate from high school; however they are not all ready to enter the work force. Vegetable gardens have been established to give the young people some experience in work related responsibility. Providing some training experience is a major step in keeping young people out of prisons, or becoming drug users or homeless. Youth Homes seeks help from community and service groups in finding job training internships and providing funding to give minimum pay during their training and intern programs. This was an interesting speaker who shared some amazing stories about the tragic lives of so many children in our own community.

WHAT ELSE HAPPENED?

The meeting got underway with a thought for the day from Al Sperske about service. Debbie Roessler received her Paul Harris Fellow recognition pin to indicate her third major $1000 Rotary Foundation contribution! Congratulations, Debbie! An announcement was made by Angelo Costanza who reported that next weeks Golf Tournament is in good shape! Tony Schoemehl expressed appreciation for all the Club members and spouses who worked on the OMPA Swim Meet activities. He pointed out several members who made total week-end commitments to the success of the event! A brief talk on My Rotary Experience was provided by Angelo Costanza, who joined Moraga Rotary during the presidency of John Erickson in 1977-78. He summed up what Rotary means to him in three words: SERVICE, HAVING FUN and EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS.

PROGRAM FOR TODAY

Today we heard an excellent program which described the four Youth Homes in our area for Foster Care children with extremely poor or non-existing family situations. Our speaker, Stuart McCullough, is the executive of Youth Homes, and shared stories of the plight of abused, neglected and mental health care young people removed from their homes by the Superior Courts in our Contra Costa County community. The speaker pointed out that in California there are 76,000 children in foster care. About 10% of Californias child population comes from families which are not able or prepared to be parents. The Youth Homes take care of foster care children with mental health, behavior, and stress problems resulting from the trauma experiences of drugs, abuse and basic neglect. Many of the youngsters have flash-back trauma which creates difficult behavioral problems in handling stressful situations. Youth Homes maintains a highly trained staff with experience in handling these problems of children. Mr. McCullough explained that 80% of the youth in Youth

Wow! What a weekend! Almost every member of Moraga Rotary showed up at the Campolindo Pool for work shifts at the annual OMPA Swim Meet from Friday through Sunday. We were also grateful for the several spouses who joined in the work! We sold hot dogs by the dozens, hundreds of cold drinks, Caesar salads as fast as they could be made; popcorn, pizza, hot coffee and chocolate, candy, chicken and tri-tip sandwiches, and about everything else you can imagine. It was a beehive of activity the entire time. Chairman Tony Schoemehl did a great job coordinating the fundraising event. We heard a number of nice comments from the attendees expressing appreciation for the good work of Moraga Rotary in the community. The selling of food and beverages to a large crowd from the very limited and marginal physical facilities is a tough job, very labor intensive and sometimes stressful. The unpredictable weather also caused some difficulties. But we survived! So, Moraga Rotary is really indebted to all members who showed up to help. Special thanks to those who did all the extra hard physical work of setting up all the tents, tables, electric lines, packing boxes, filling ice barrels, carrying coffee and hot chocolate cambros, loading and

unloading supplies and just standing on your feet for long hours. To all who gave their time you are very much appreciated. The early preliminary figures suggest that our final figures may show this could be our very best year of net income for our Clubs service funds.

FUN N GAMES & OTHER STUFF

Rich & Peg Render spent their 37 Anniversary with a delicious dinner at Nations Hamburgers! Lou Roessler had a birthday this week; his gift from Debbie was a paint job for his Datsun car he has been restoring. Tony Schoemehl had some kind of wild story of a taping machine, belonging to Rich Render, falling off his car as he made an escape from 5-A Storage! Ron Julian told of attending Murphys Rotary Club and winning $25. So he added another $25 and made it $50 as a donation to relieve his guilt for missing the OMPA duty! John Erickson happily donated $2 for the super work of new member, Kurt Knauer, at the OMPA sweat shop! Doug Damaschino confessed their trip to Maui and Lanai in Hawaii over the past week. The spin settled for $30! Al Simonsen related how his young nephew swam in the OMPA races in the tiny tots class but stopped of the lap because that was how far they went in their warm up swim! Angelo Costanza told a happy story of a small child at the swim meet that had just made a personal best. Mary Elena Dochterman had a couple bucks to share the pride she had this year in seeing OMPA had some special team races for special kids who we so delighted to win medals! Frank May had a high $5 for Cliff Dochterman, the OMPA popcorn popper, who made and sold 929 sacks of popcorn! And Frank was the cashier and Aide to the Popper! Debbie Roessler also had a $5er in appreciation for all of the Club Spouses who were such a huge help during the OMPA weekend! Kurt Knauer held the red ticket and settled for the $10.

VISIONING EVENING WHAT IS IT AND WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

You will see on our Calendar of Future Events the date of Tuesday, September 13 is listed as Club Visioning Evening. This evening should be of great interest to every member of Moraga Rotary Club. It is an occasion when we all join in a practical discussion of the strengths of Moraga Rotary; and what, if any, are the weaknesses or limitations of our club? We look at both the short and long term future of our Club. What additional community needs of our town should or could we be meeting? How large should our club be to achieve our most effectiveness? Should we be more or less involved in international activities? Are there youth activities in which we should be involved? Are we stressing Vocational Service enough? What will our Club look like in the next 5 years? Or maybe in the next 10 years? A Visioning Evening brings in an experienced leader from
