Lighting Fixtures and its Application

At the end of this module you must be able to:

1. Identify the different types of lighting fixtures

Lighting fixture or lamp is the general term used in identifying electrical lighting
units and are common devices that we see in every household, industrial, and
commercial establishment. We may have taken these devices for granted but the fact is;
life would have been so dark and slow without them.

Installation of lighting fixtures is not as easy as it may seem because you need to
consider choosing the right type for a specific application. For example, people working
at night could be affected in their performance with poor lighting or too much distribution
of light.

In addition, safety must not be undermined above all else considering the risk
that is brought by electricity. We may have heard fires caused by electricity that can be
attributed to the wrong practice of electrical installation in general. In which case the
Philippine Electrical Code provides safety guidelines to ensure standardized, quality, and
safe results of work.

Types of Switches

At the end of this module, you must be able to:

1. Identify the different types of switches

A switch is an electronic component that can disconnect and connect the

electric current in an electrical circuit. Switches are designed to have
different ratings and electrical characteristics. The rating of switches is
based on multiple factor such as the used material and insulation class of

TITLE:
Troubleshoot Incandescent Lamps
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE:
Given all the necessary facilities, tools, equipment and materials, you should be able to troubleshoot
incandescent lamps and apply remedial actions.
SUPPLIES/ MATERIALS: (All the enumerated items are pre-installed)
Incandescent lamp CB Panel Circuit Breaker Wires
Wire nut/electrical tape (plastic) Lamp Receptacle Wood screw
TOOLS:
Pliers Screw Drivers VOM/Multimeter Tester (Analog/Digital)

STEPS/ PROCEDURE:
1. Communicate with your trainer regarding the activity and gather initial information about the mock-
up assignment for you to do the troubleshooting.
2. Prepare all the necessary tools, materials and test instruments for you to use.
3. Proceed to your assigned area and start the troubleshooting by turning off the circuit breaker at the
panel.
4. Lower the lighting fixture and check to see that there is a good connection between the fixture wires
and branch circuit wires. Those wiring connections are made using a wire nut and can slip out of them
if installed improperly.

With the meter set on the ohms range, check for continuity between the white fixture wire and the
metal shell inside the light socket. If there is continuity, the meter will display “0.000” on its LCD. If the
socket is bad, the LCD will display “O.L.” If you are using the analog tester the pointer would deflect to
“zero ohm” when there is a continuity otherwise it would remain in its normal position.
5. If the connections were good: remove the lamp from the fixtures and test the lamp for resistance. Set
the DMM to the Ohms range. Connect the tester’s probe to the metal thread and tip of the base. If the
point does not deflect, it means the lamp is busted and needs to be replaced, but if the pointer deflects
between infinity and zero, then the lamp is good.
6. If the socket turned out okay but the light still does not work, the brass contact of the socket is not
making contact with the base of the bulb and needs to be adjusted enough to make contact with the
base of the lamp.
7. If the continuity of connection between wires and socket and lamp is good then check the continuity of
the light switch if it still works.
8. Notify your trainer when the trouble is fixed.
9. Return your tools and instruments to the proper storage area.

STEPS/ PROCEDURE:
1. Communicate with your trainer and gather information regarding your task.
2. Prepare all necessary tools, materials, and instruments needed for the task.
3. Locate the mock-up where you will be working and start your work.
4. Turn off the circuit breaker on the panel and double-check the voltage present in the circuit by using a
non-contact voltage tester.
5. Remove the switch from the device box.
6. Disconnect the switch from the line wire and switch wire.
7. Test the functionality of the switch using the multimeter.
● Set the multimeter to Ohm (Ω) range
● Connect the test probes of the multimeter to the two terminals of the switch respectively.
● If you are using an analog multimeter the pointer should deflect to zero ohm or near zero ohms
when the switch is turned on, which means that the switch is “functional ”. If you are using a digital
multimeter the display should read “000” and a continuous beeping sound will be heard if the
sound indicator is turned on. In this case, the switch can be reinstalled.
If the switch is not functional, the pointer should not deflect when the switch is turned on.

If you are using a digital multimeter, the display should read “O.L.” which stands for “Open Line”.

This means the switch should be replaced with a functional one.

8. Notify your trainer when you are through with your task.
