Summary
Biographical Abstract: Artist Robert Rauschenberg was born in Port Arthur, Texas, in
1925. From the late 1940s until the artist's death in Captiva,
Florida in 2008, Rauschenberg worked in a wide range of
subjects, styles, materials, and techniques. He is considered a
forerunner to many postwar art movements since Abstract
Expressionism, although he remained independent of affiliation
with any particular art movement. Rauschenberg had a lifelong
commitment to collaboration, working extensively with performers,
printers, writers, artists, and artisans from around the world. For a full
chronology of Rauschenberg’s life see:
https://www.rauschenbergfoundation.org/artist/chronology
Scope and Abstract: The Robert Rauschenberg papers encompass the artist's personal
papers and studio records related to all aspects of his life and art
making activities. The collection consists of 250 cubic feet of
materials and includes business and financial records, biographies
and chronologies, calendars, correspondence, ephemera and
printed materials, interviews, legal documents, notes, project
files, source materials, and Rauschenberg's writings. Although the
collection contains some earlier records, the bulk of the material
in the collection dates from 1970 until 2012, which coincides
with the formal closure of the Robert Rauschenberg Studio,
approximately four years after his death.

Scope and Content
The Robert Rauschenberg papers encompass the artist's personal papers and studio records related to
all aspects of his life and art making activities. The collection consists of 250 cubic feet of materials and
includes business and financial records, biographies and chronologies, calendars, correspondence,
ephemera and printed materials, interviews, legal documents, notes, project files, source materials, and
Rauschenberg's writings.
The materials within this collection were created or collected by both Rauschenberg and the Robert
Rauschenberg Studio, which had locations in Captiva, Florida and New York City. Rauschenberg’s staff
and studio assistants over the years have included: Thomas Buehler, Emil Fray, Laurence Getford, Gina
Guy, Matt Hall, Bradley Jeffries, Denise LeBeau, Matt Magee, Brice Marden, Robert Petersen, Darryl
Pottorf, Dorothea Rockburne, Terry Van Brunt, Lawrence Voytek, David White, and Charles Yoder.
Although the collection contains some earlier records, the bulk of the material in the collection dates
from 1970 until 2012, which coincides with the formal closure of the Robert Rauschenberg Studio,
approximately four years after his death.
The collection is divided into nine series. The Biographical Materials series contains primary and
research materials related to Rauschenberg’s personal life and family, as well as documentation of
professional activities outside his art making practice, such as his involvement on various boards and
committees, public engagements, and his activism for artists’ rights. The Business Records series
contains materials related to the administrative, financial and legal aspects of running the Robert
Rauschenberg Studio. The series encompasses records related to all the entities formed by
Rauschenberg and his advisors including Untitled Press, Inc., Robert Rauschenberg, Inc. and Cloud
Management. The Correspondence series contains incoming administrative and personal
correspondence received by Rauschenberg and his studio. This series includes correspondence from
friends, artists and collaborators, as well as government bodies, politicians, humanitarian organizations,
media companies and others. The Interviews series contains transcripts and related materials for both
published and unpublished interviews with Rauschenberg, spanning five decades and addressing a wide
range of subjects related to Rauschenberg’s art making activities. The Performance series contains
materials related to performances that Rauschenberg created, collaborated on, or participated in. The
series also contains a selection of documentation of performances by Rauschenberg’s collaborators and
friends. The Printed Materials series contains printed ephemera such as postcards, brochures, flyers,
and a small number of press clippings primarily related to Rauschenberg, his artwork and exhibitions.
The Projects and Exhibitions series contains materials related to Rauschenberg’s exhibitions, artworks,
collaborative projects including Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.), Rauschenberg Overseas
Culture Interchange (ROCI), print and poster projects, commissions, unrealized projects, and films and
publications about the artist. The series also contains correspondence and other documents from
galleries and museums. The Subject Files series contains a small number of subject files, which were
kept by Rauschenberg’s studio in the late 1960s. The Writings and Notes series contains highlights of
the collection, Rauschenberg’s writings, which include handwritten drafts of outgoing correspondence,
statements about his artwork and art making philosophies, and notes on artworks and performances.
The collection does not include Rauschenberg’s artwork. The collection contains some notes, lists,
diagrams, and other preparatory materials, but it does not contain more traditional preparatory
sketches. Only source materials, such as magazine clippings and photographs, identified as being used
in a specific project are included in this collection. Art materials, performance props, and personal
collections of travel ephemera and other objects that may or may not have been used in artwork are
not part of this collection.
The collection contains some documentary photographs; however, the majority of photographic
material can be found in the Photograph collection (RRFA 09). All audiovisual material can be found in
the Audiovisual collection (RRFA 02).

and Exhibitions series or the Curatorial Clipping Files (ACC 48). Travel contains airline tickets,
inventories, and schedules.
Highlights within this series include planning and press materials related to Rauschenberg's
activism, specifically his work with artists' rights; detailed information on various awards and
honors, board and committee appointments, and public engagements; and his annual calendars
that were primarily kept by studio staff, who often outlined his activities in a diary-like format.
Photographs and audiovisual materials related to biographical subjects are located in the
Photograph collection (RRFA 09) and the Audiovisual collection (RRFA 02) respectively.
Processing Information: The majority of the records in this series were created or collected by

Series Overview
Scope and Content: The Business Records series contains materials related to the
administrative, financial and legal aspects of running the Robert Rauschenberg Studio. The series
encompasses records related to all the entities formed by Rauschenberg and his advisors including
Untitled Press, Inc., Robert Rauschenberg, Inc. and Cloud Management. Due to the significant,
and often inextricable, overlap between Rauschenberg's personal and professional financial
records, both are found in this series. The records in this series date from the 1960s to early
2012, although the bulk of the records are from the 1980s onward. Many of the records from the
1970s and 1980s came from Rubin Gorewitz, Rauschenberg's accountant during that time period.
The General sub-series contains the studio's address books and contact lists, stationary and
documentation related to studio and household equipment. In addition to information regarding
appliances, office equipment, computer hardware and software, there are files related to art
supplies, cameras, video and audio equipment likely used in Rauschenberg's artmaking activities.
These materials primarily consist of manuals and other product information. There is some
correspondence in this sub-series from studio staff, mostly related to collection management
databases.
The Collection Management sub-series contains materials related to Rauschenberg's artwork and
artworks by other artists owned by Rauschenberg. Materials include appraisals, inventories,
correspondence, conservation information, insurance, sales, shipping and storage information.
The Correspondence, Memoranda, and Notes sub-series contains correspondence, memoranda and
notes primarily created by Rauschenberg's studio employees and Rubin Gorewitz, Rauschenberg's
accountant. Additional correspondence of an administrative nature can also be found in the
Administrative sub-series of the Correspondence series.
The Finance sub-series contains financial records such as balance sheets and ledgers, bank
statements, check stubs, contributions and donations to various organizations and people,
deposits, invoices and receipts, payroll information, and tax returns and supporting
documentation. The invoices found in this sub-series encompass all studio and personal
expenditures; most significantly, they contain some receipts for purchases of art supplies interfiled
among other invoices and receipts.
The Legal sub-series primarily contains files related to various lawsuits, both brought against and
initiated by Rauschenberg. Other legal documents found in the series include, contracts, powers of
attorney, a New York residency audit, Rauschenberg's will and the establishment of his
foundation.
The Real Estate sub-series contains records related to the various properties owned by
Rauschenberg, including his New York City Studio at 381 Lafayette Street and his multiple
properties in Captiva, Florida. Records related to warehouses used for art storage and two Los
Page 12
Angeles properties briefly owned by Rauschenberg are also found in this sub-series. Documents in
this sub-series include correspondence, deeds, financial and mortgage information, floorplans and
other documents related to renovations, insurance information, property surveys and
specifications, and property taxes.
The Staff sub-series contains applications for employment, benefits and insurance policies, some
payroll information, project and job descriptions, staff lists and a small number of staff files.
Additional payroll and wage information is found in the Finance sub-series.
Arrangement: This series is subdivided into the following sub-series: General; Collection
Management; Correspondence, Memoranda, and Notes; Finance; Legal; Real Estate; and Staff.
These sub-series are arranged alphabetically, with the exception of the Finance sub-series, which is
arranged chronologically.
Processing Information: The records in this series were created or collected by the Robert
Rauschenberg Studio; the series and its arrangement were created during processing.

Series 3: Correspondence
Dates: 1962-2010
Scope and Content: The Correspondence series contains incoming business and personal
correspondence received by Robert Rauschenberg and his studio.
The Administrative sub-series contains incoming correspondence sent to Rauschenberg and his
studio addressing various projects and business matters. The series offers a view into the day-to-
day activities of Rauschenberg's studio and demonstrates his community engagement and
widespread professional influence. In addition to incoming correspondence, there are some carbon-
copies of outgoing correspondence from early studio assistants (1970s) and print-outs of e-mail
correspondence from later years (2000s). Outgoing correspondence is written by studio staff on
behalf of Rauschenberg and occasionally contains direct quotes from the artist. Studio staff whose
correspondence may be found in the series include: Thomas Buehler, Gina Guy, Bradley Jeffries
(Fray), Denise LeBeau, Dorothea Rockburne, David White, and Charles Yoder. Letter writers include
government bodies and politicians, humanitarian organizations, artists' foundations, museums,
galleries, educational institutions, media companies, and others. For additional correspondence
related to Museums, Galleries and specific projects such as Experiments in Art and Technology
(E.A.T.) or Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange (ROCI) see the Projects and Exhibitions
series.
Birthday, get well and holiday cards, fan letters, invitations, and newsletters are generally grouped
together into their own sub-series, although some may also be found in the Administrative or
Personal sub-series.
The Personal sub-series contains letters sent to Rauschenberg and to his studio assistants.
Correspondence in this sub-series is generally more personal and less business oriented than the
Administrative sub-series, but, due to the overlap in Rauschenberg's personal and professional life,
there is overlap between the two sub-series. In addition to letters, the Personal sub-series contains
some writings, newspaper clippings, notes, drafts, photographs, and sketches sent to
Rauschenberg in the mail. Highlights of the Personal sub-series includes letters from artists and
collaborators such as Mel Bochner, Trisha Brown, Merce Cunningham, Sidney B. Felsen, Dorothea
Rockburne, James Rosenquist, and Jean Tinguley.
For drafts of Rauschenberg's outgoing correspondence, both administrative and personal, see the
Writings and Notes series.
Arrangement: This series is divided into the following sub-series: Administrative, Cards, Fan
Letters, Invitations, Newsletters, and Personal. The Administrative and Personal sub-series are
arranged alphabetically by sender's last name or name of sending institution. Some correspondence
is only sorted by sender's initial letter into General folders; it is recommended that researchers
check these folders in addition to individually identified folders. Correspondence from unidentified
senders is found at the end of the Administrative and Personal sub-series.
Processing Information: The majority of the records in this series were collected by the Robert
Rauschenberg Studio; the series and its arrangement were created during processing, with the
exception of the Personal sub-series, which is based on an original “People” grouping created by
the studio.

Series 4: Interviews
Dates: 1962-2005
Scope and Content: The Interviews series contains materials related to both published and
unpublished interviews with Robert Rauschenberg (exceptions noted in the folder list) and
includes printed, typewritten, or photocopied transcripts. The series spans five decades and
addresses a wide range of topics related to Rauschenberg's art making activities. In addition to
interview texts, the series contains drafts, notes, and correspondence related to the interviews
and subsequent publications. Interviews are listed by interviewer, title, and publication, if
known. In the folder list, unpublished interviews are typically referred to as "personal
interviews." Folders described as "questions …" refer to questions submitted to Rauschenberg in
writing along with Rauschenberg's written responses. Noted interviewers include Dorothy
Seckler, James Rosenquist and Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel.
Processing Information: Rauschenberg’s studio staff compiled the majority of the materials in
the Interviews series. When appropriate, related materials were integrated into the series during
processing.

Series 5: Performance
Historical Note: Performance was an integral part of Robert Rauschenberg's artistic output. In
addition to choreographing and performing in his own works, Rauschenberg collaborated with
choreographers throughout his career. He designed sets, costumes and lighting for Trisha Brown,
Merce Cunningham, and Paul Taylor, among others. Rauschenberg was involved with the Judson
Dance Theater in the early 1960s, an experimental collective of dancers and visual artists. The
first performance choreographed by Rauschenberg was "Pelican" (1963) performed at the Pop Art
Festival in Washington, D.C. in May 1963. His most productive period as choreographer occurred
between 1963 and 1967; Rauschenberg's choreographed performances from this time period
include "Linoleum" (1966), "Map Room II" (1965), and "Spring Training" (1965). From 1954 to
1964 Rauschenberg worked as the lighting, set and costume designer for the Merce Cunningham
Dance Company, accompanying the group on a world tour in 1964. Having first met in the 1960s,
Rauschenberg's collaboration with Trisha Brown spanned multiple decades and included set and
costume design for "Glacial Decoy" (1979) and "Set and Reset" (1983).
Scope and Content: The Performance series contains materials related to performances that
Robert Rauschenberg created, collaborated on, or participated in. The series also contains a
selection of documentation of performances by Rauschenberg's collaborators and friends. The bulk
of the documentation consists of handwritten or typed notes, sketches, and scores by Rauschenberg
and collaborators, and printed materials such as flyers, posters and programs publicizing and
documenting the events. Highlights of the series include Rauschenberg's costume design sketches
for Merce Cunningham; Rauschenberg's notes and supply lists for his performances including "Map
Room II" (1965), "Open Score" (1966), "Pelican" (1963), and "Spring Training" (1965); and
Rauschenberg's notebooks documenting his participation in multiple works by various artists.
Collaborators represented in this series include Trisha Brown, Merce Cunningham, Deborah Hay,
Yvonne Rainer, and Paul Taylor. The majority of the records in this series date from the 1960s
through the 1980s.
This series does not contain documentary photographs or audiovisual materials. Photographs
documenting performance events can be found in the Photograph collection (RRFA 09). Audiovisual
materials documenting performance events can be found in the Audiovisual collection (RRFA 02).
Additional materials related to "Open Score" (1966) can be found in the Experiments in Art and
Technology (E.A.T) sub-series of the Projects and Exhibitions series.
Processing Information: Rauschenberg's studio staff compiled the majority of the materials in
the Performance series. When appropriate, related materials were integrated into the series
during processing.

Scope and Content: This series contains printed ephemera such as postcards, brochures, flyers,
and a small number of press clippings primarily related to Robert Rauschenberg, his artwork and
exhibitions. Also included in the series are subject files of ephemera on other people and other
topics. Additional printed materials can also be found in the Performance series and the Projects
and Exhibition series. Small exhibition catalogues may be found within this series; however, for
most exhibition catalogues consult the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Library. For additional
press clippings, consult the Curatorial Clipping Files (ACC 48), managed by the Robert
Rauschenberg Foundation's curatorial department.
Arrangement: This series is divided into subjects: other people, other topics, and Rauschenberg,
Robert. The Rauschenberg section is further sub-divided into general files, artwork, and exhibitions.
Files within each subject division are arranged alphabetically, with the exception of the Exhibitions:
Group and Exhibitions: Solo sub-divisions, which are arranged chronologically.
Processing Information: The arrangement of this series is based on categories used by the
Robert Rauschenberg Studio. Printed materials that were not part of other files were interfiled into
the series when appropriate. Printed materials found in the Curatorial Clipping Files (ACC 48),
managed by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation's curatorial department, were moved into this
series; duplicate printed materials were left in the clipping files.

documentation include correspondence, notes, printed materials, photographs, contracts, floor
plans, loan and shipping information, source materials, and some financial records.
Arrangement: This series is subdivided into the following sub-series: Donations, Experiments in Art
and Technology (E.A.T.), Galleries, Museums and Art Centers, Photography, Print Studios,
Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange (ROCI), Special Projects, and Unique Works. Each sub-
series is arranged alphabetically by artwork title, descriptive title, institution name, or subject.

Page 103
Projects and Exhibitions Sub-Series 2: Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.)
Historical Note: Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.) was co-founded by Rauschenberg,
Bell Telephone Laboratories engineers Billy Klüver and Fred Waldhauer, and artist Robert Whitman
in late 1966. Its formation was directly preceded by 9 Evenings: Theatre & Engineering, an event
held at the 69th Regiment Armory in October 1966. The purpose of the organization was to foster
contact and collaboration between artists and engineers and encourage the use of technology in art.
The organization undertook various projects and produced publications such as E.A.T. News, first
published in January 1967. Rauschenberg actively participated in E.A.T. events and projects until
approximately 1972.
Scope and Content: The Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.) sub-series contains
materials related to projects and events undertaken by the organization and administrative
information related to the organizational structure and running of the organization. The sub-
series includes correspondence, ephemera, notes, press clippings, press releases, and project
descriptions and proposals. Highlights include documentation of the 9 Evenings: Theatre &
Engineering event and Rauschenberg's performance, "Open Score" (1966).

Scope and Content: The Museums and Art Centers sub-series documents the relationships between
the Robert Rauschenberg Studio and various museums and other arts organizations, defined as non-
for-profit institutions that do not sell artwork. The sub-series includes correspondence, some
ephemera, exhibition planning documentation, exhibition checklists, loan and shipping information.
There is minimal documentation of Rauschenberg's early exhibitions, such as his 1963 early career
retrospective held at the Jewish Museum. However, the sub-series contains extensive documentation
of later exhibitions such as Rauschenberg's late career retrospective organized by the Solomon R.
Guggenheim Museum in 1997. Other well documented exhibitions in this sub-series include the
"Robert Rauschenberg: Combines" exhibition organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los
Page 114
Angeles and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2005 and "Robert Rauschenberg, On and Off the
Wall" organized by Musée d'Art moderne et d'Art contemporain, Nice, France in 2006. For traveling,
multi-venue exhibitions, materials related to the same exhibition are filed separately under each
venue for which documentation exists; files related to various venues and unidentified exhibitions are
found at the end of the sub-series.
Some correspondence between the Robert Rauschenberg Studio and various museums and art
centers may also be found in the Administrative Correspondence sub-series; printed ephemera
related to museum exhibitions may also be found in the Printed Materials series; Installation
photographs can be found in the Photograph collection (RRFA 09).

Historical Note: Rauschenberg worked at various print studios throughout his career, starting in
the early 1960s, primarily Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) in West Islip, Long Island; Gemini
G.E.L. in Los Angeles; Graphicstudio at the University of South Florida, and his own studio, Untitled
Press, Inc. in Captiva, Florida. After invitations from Tatyana Grosman, the founder of ULAE, and
with the encouragement of Jasper Johns, Rauschenberg came to ULAE in 1962 to create his first
Page 145
printed editions. Rauschenberg first worked at Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles in 1967 on "Booster"
and "7 Studies," combining lithography and silkscreen. Rauschenberg continued to work at both
ULAE and Gemini G.E.L. on various projects for four decades. In 1971, with the assistance of
Robert Petersen, with whom he worked at Gemini G.E.L., Rauschenberg established Untitled
Press, Inc., which remained active through the late 1970s at his studio in Captiva, Florida. In
1972, he established a life-long working relationship with Graphicstudio at the University of South
Florida and Donald Saff, the print shop's director. Other print studios where Rauschenberg worked
include Multiples Inc., and Styria Studio.
Scope and Content: The Print Studios sub-series contains material related to Rauschenberg's
work at and collaboration with print studios including Gemini G.E.L., Graphicstudio at University of
South Florida, Multiples Inc., Styria Studio, Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE), and Untitled
Press, Inc. The sub-series contains correspondence, contracts, ephemera, some financial records,
notes and notebooks, and source and research material. Highlights include Rauschenberg's notes
and notebook, a book maquette, and source material for the "Stoned Moon" project; and diagrams,
