1.1 PDF Imposition

Thank you for purchasing Compose PDF Imposition. Compose PDF Imposition revolutionizes
tradition imposition process using PDFs. Designed to work in conjunction with any Compose’s
Workflow solutions, which can enchance your productivity by saving on time and cost.

PDF Imposition accepts any PDFs files. After imposition, it will generate a new set of high
resolution PDF files of the imposition sheet, which is now ready to RIP.

Chapter 2: System Requirement

2.1 Hardware Requirements

CPU Intel Pentium III 800MHz or above.


Install on Dual CPU system is recommended.
Memory At least 256 MB RAM.
Hard Disk A minimum of 20GB hard disk is recommended.
Display at least 800x600 pixels (Recommend 1024x768 pixel).

2.2 Software Requirements

Operating System
Microsoft Windows 2000 with Service Pack 2 or above

Applications
Express RIP version 5.3r4a or above
Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or above.

2.3 Software Package

Inside the package, you should have the following items:


1. A CD ROM with PDF Imposition software.
2. PDF Imposition user manual in PDF format (this document).
3. A Hardware dongle key for the PDF Imposition.

Software installation steps:

PDF Imposition installation steps are as follows:

STEP 1 Locate the PDF Imposition software inside the CD ROM. Double-click SETUP.exe to
start the installation.

STEP 2 Startup screen is prompting. Click Next to continue or Cancel to quit.

installation. Click Next to continue.

3.2 Hardware Key Plugin Installation

The Hardware Key plugin installation steps are as follows:

STEP 1 Locate the HardLock folder in the PDF Imposition root directory.

STEP 2 Double-click HLDRV32.exe to install the software.

STEP 3 Select the language that you would like to use during the installation. Press OK to
continue.

Note:
If you do not install the Hardware key or if the dongle is not attached to your computer, PDF
Imposition will run in DEMO mode. When you launch the demo version of PDF Imposition, you
will see the warning as 3.2 Fig 6.

Click Start to run PDF Imposition.

Chapter 4 Using PDF Imposition

You can now start using PDF Imposition. To launch the PDF Imposition, select PDF Imposition
from the PDF Imposition group.

Go to start > Program > PDF Imposition > PDF Imposition 3.0 or you can click on
PDFImposition.exe from the folder where the PDF Imposition is installed.

Once you have started PDF Imposition, you can choose a language from Setup > Preference
> Language for PDF Imposition User Interface.

4.1 Style Imposition

4.1.1 Create an Imposition File

To start using the PDF Imposition, you must first create a new imposition file.

Select File > New Imposition File or Press Ctrl+N to create a new Imposition.

i. Layout File

Click on the button to locate the saved layout files.

ii. Plate Size

Check Automatic Size if you want PDF Imposition to define a suitable plate size by itself
(check Apply Style box first). If you want to select the existing page sizes, you need to
uncheck Automatic Size and choose one from the Plate Size drop down menu.

If you cannot find a suitable plate size from the list, create your own custom plate size with
Setup next to the Plate Size drop down menu.

In the Plate Size setup menu, click Add to define a new plate size or Delete an existing plate
size.

Input the Width and Height for the new plate after selecting Add button. You can also select
the Unit in terms of mm, cm, inch or points.

Click Margins to set the plate margins. Please refer to Chapter 5 for more details.

iii. Apply Style

Check the Apply Style checkbox. You will now be able to choose a style from the list of
predefined imposition style. Select a style from the list or you can create a new style.

To create a new style, click Setup button.

Select an imposition style to edit the selected style or click “+” to create a new style or click the
“x” button to delete the chosen style.

Type in the style name to the New Style dialog and click OK.

Automatic Style
Check Automatic if you want PDF Imposition to use the predefined values for Pages and
Folding. You can change the number of pages and binding direction from the Pages and
Folding drop down lists.

Click Setup Folding to change the folding sequence of that style. In the Folding Settings
dialog, you need to locate the first page of the job so that PDF Imposition can automatically
decide the folding sequence and direction. Click OK after selecting the first page.

You can define the number of columns, rows and page direction of the layout by inputting the
values for the Columns, Rows and Page Direction fields.

Sides
Choose Single if the pages are going to be printed on one side or Double if they are going to
be printed on both front and back sides.

iv. Page Size

Once you have checked the Apply Style box, you can choose a page size from the Page Size
dropdown list. The page size you have chosen will be the size of each page on the layout. Click
Setup if you want to create a new page size or delete the existing page sizes.

Click Add if you want to create a new page size. In the Size dialog, type in the Name, Width
and Height for the custom page sizes.

Click Width / Heights to enter the Setup Page dialog. You can define the width and height of
each page on the plate.

Single Page Size Check this option if you want the width and height to be the
same for all pages on the layout.

Width If Single Page Size is checked, this option is grayed out. If


Single Page Size is unchecked, you can enter the value to
the Width input box to define the width of the selected page
chosen from the Width drop down list.

Height If Single Page Size is checked, this option is grayed out. If


Single Page Size is unchecked, you can enter the value to
the Height input box to define the width of the selected
page chosen from the Height drop down list.

Unit Choose a unit that you want to use from the drop down list.

v. Flipping Direction

This option is grayed out until you have checked Apply Style.

vi. Binding

Click Plain if you are working on single plate. Choose Saddle Stitch when binding will be
performed. Once you have enabled this binding, you need to enter a value for Creep
Adjustment. The value you have set to Creep Adjustment is the value of how much each of
the pages will move towards the binding edge.

vii. Marks

Click Marks to choose the marks that you want to use. Please refer to Chapter 5 for more
details.

After you have clicked OK in the Layout Settings dialog, the Ordering Sheet window will
appear.

Click this button to enter the Page Cropping dialog.
Click this button to enter the Bleed Settings dialog.
Click this button to set the orientation of the selected page(s) to 0 degree.
Click this button to set the orientation of the selected page(s) to 90 degrees.
Click this button to set the orientation of the selected page(s) to 180 degrees.
Click this button to set the orientation of the selected page(s) to 270 degrees.

Click the add files button to open the Select Paged window.

Select PDF Files from the File Type drop down menu. Locate the folder where the PDF files
are stored and all the files in the selected folder will be shown in the Select Page window.
Select the pages that you want to impose by high-lighting the pages.

4.1.2 Fig 3 Select Page

You can impose individual color plates or treat the job as a composite color plate by checking
the Composite Page. Using the Composite Pages option is recommended that can ensure
accurate registration.

Once you have clicked OK, the selected pages will appear in the Ordering Sheet window. You
may see a line after a certain page in the list. This line helps to clarify which pages will be
imposed to which plate layout.

Click Apply to impose the pages to the plate layout.

4.1.3 Plate Layout Preview

After you have clicked the Apply button in the Order Sheet window, the pages will be imposed
on the layout. The job name and the page numbers are shown on each page.

If you want to preview a page, you can select File > Preview. Adobe Acrobat Reader will
prompt to preview the PDF imposition. Click on the toolbar to preview the next plate.

Please choose File > Save to save the imposition file for future use.

4.1.4 Proofing

You can output the plate to any proofing device on your Microsoft Windows System.
Select File > Proofing function.

Range You can choose to print all of the plates you are working on.
You can also select the plates in range, or you can choose to
print the odd or even plates. Enter the values to Form and
To fields to define the range of the plates that will be
printed.

Content If the Page Content and Page Information are checked,


page content as well as page information will be shown on
the printout.

Click OK to continue. You will see the below Print window. Choose a printer that you want to
print your job and click OK to start printing.

4.1.5 Print

Choose File > Print function from the menu.

Output Type Choose PDF File as the output file type.

Print Range Select the plates that you want to print.

Rotate Check this button of you want to rotate the output file.

Split Check this button and enter the overlap width if you tile the
plates. After you click the OK button, you will see the Tiling
dialog appears

Mirror The imposition jobs will be mirrored if you select this


function.

Output File Choose whether to print the plates as one document by


choosing Per Document from the drop down list, or choose
Per Plate if you want each plate if the jobs defined as a
Single document. For example, if your job has 4 plates and
you select Per Plate for the Output File field, then PDF
Imposition will print 4 different files.
Color Plates Click the Setup button to select the colors that you want to
print.

Collating Mark / Tag Color Choose a color for collating mark / tag.

If you select Split in the Printing dialog, you will see the following. You need to enter the value
for number of Rows and Columns. Click OK to print the job.

4.1.5 Fig 2 Tiling screen will show if you select Split in the Printing dialog and press OK.

Click OK to print the imposed PDF file. You will be where you want to store the PDF files.

4.2 Free Style Imposition

Free Style Imposition means none of the predefined styles will be used. Thus you can define
the position of each page on the layout.

Go File > New Imposition to create a new imposition file.

Select a plate size from the list, or create a new page size by clicking Setup. Keep the Apply
Style checkbox unchecked. Click OK.

Go to File > Ordering Sheet to locate the PDF files that you want to impose.

After you click Apply, you will see the following and notice that all the pages are stacked at the
same position. You can drag the pages to any position on the plate.

If you use Free Style Imposition method, you can drag your jobs to any location on the
plate.

5.1 Preference

You can change the PDF Imposition settings by modifying the preferences. Select Setup >
Preference from menu.

Default Unit Set the unit by choosing one of the options from the unit
drop down list.

Display Font Click the “…” button to set the display font for the PDF
Imposition.

Arrow Key Type in the values to the Normal and With <Shift> fields to
define the length of each step when you use the arrow keys
to move the pages on the plate. Normal means when you
press the arrow keys on your keyboard without holding the
Shift key. With <Shift> means when you press the arrow
keys on your keyboard holding the Shift key.

ii. Directories

You can change the directories of the Temporary, Styles, Marks and Layout with Browse
button.

Press Browse to locate the Default Input, Output and Layout folder.

You can use other languages by choosing one of the options from the drop down list. You need
to restart the PDF Imposition after you have changed the language setting.

5.2 Marks and Margins

5.2.1 Marks

This option determines the kind of marks that PDF Imposition will place on the layout. From the
Layout Settings, click the Marks button to access the Marks Settings. There are five tap
pages of Marks Settings.

i. Plate Mark

You can place or remove any marks with checking the option boxes. Select different kinds of
marks style by choosing the one that you want to use from each of the drop down lists.

ii. Plate Label

Color Names The color names will be shown on the plate if this box is
checked.

Label Text If this is checked, you can define your own format for the
label text that shown on the plate by clicking the “…” button.

Font Click on the “…” button to choose the font and size that you
want to use.

5.2.1 Fig 4 Edit Font

Position Choose an option from the drop down list to define where
you want the plate label to be placed.

Margin Enter a value to define where the plate label to start from.

Color Calibration Bar Check this option if you want to show the color calibration
bar on the plate. You should also need to define the position
and margin for the color calibration bar.

Grip Mark This mark will display at the middle bottom of the plate if
you check this box.

iii. Collating Mark / Tag

5.2.1 Fig 5 Collating Mark / Tag – Mark Settings

Check the Collating Mark checkbox if you want to show the collating mark on the layout.
Enter the values to Width, Length, Space, Top and Bottom fields to define where the
collating mark should be placed and the width and length of the collating mark.

Click Detail to enter the Collating Mark Setup Dialog.

Click Load if you want to use an existing collating mark file or change the settings in this dialog
to create a new collating file. Click Save to save the Setup. Press OK to go back to the
Collating Mark / Tag page.

Check the Collating Tag box when you want show the collating tag on the layout. If you want
to change the text or font format, click the “…” buttons.

iv. Page Mark

There are 2 page marks you can choose. You can place or remove any page marks by checking
options.

Color Names The color names will be shown on the plate if this box is
checked.

Label Text String If this is checked, you can define your own format for the
label text that shown on the plate by clicking the “…” button.

Font Click on the “…” button to choose the font and size that you
want to use.
Position Choose an option from the drop down list to define where
you want the plate label to be placed.

Margin Enter a value to define where the plate label to start from.

v. Mark Output Settings

You can input the values to Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black for controlling the color of the
marks.

Enter the line width of the marks by inputting a value to the Line Width field.

5.2.2 Margins

Click on the Margins button to enter the margins in the Layout Settings. You can change the
plate margins between pages by clicking Margins. Set the margin by either changing the
values on their corresponding boxes o the right or double click on the numbers to change it.

Margin E Type in the value for the right and left margins

Margin F Type in the value for the top margin.

Margin G Type in the value for the bottom margin.

Margin H Type in the value for the gripper size and choose the
position where the gripper should be placed.

Margin X Type in the value for the horizontal distance between the
pages.

Margin Y Type in the value for the vertical distance between the
pages.

5.3 Plate Layout Features

Select the whole plate or high-light any individual pages and right click the mouse will activate
the feature menu.

i. Properties

Page Number You can change the page number of the selected page.

Direction You can change the direction of the selected page.

Size You can change the size of the selected page by choosing a
page size from the drop down list.

Position You can change the position of the selected page by typing
in the values for X and Y coordinates.

ii. Layout

Choose this option to open the Layout Settings UI.

iii. Marks

Chose this option to open the Mark Setting menu. You can add, edit or delete the marks.

iv. Plate Margins


The Margin Settings will be opened for editing the margins.

v. Replace Pages
This option will open the Select Pages window. Select a page from the list in the Select Page
to replace the selected page on the layout. Click OK to confirm changes.

vi. Page Setup

Cropping Select the region to crop either by changing the values from
the input boxes or drag the red line on the screen. The
cropped region can be moved around using the arrows

Size You can change the page size by input the values to W and
H fields.

Page Direction You can change the direction of the page by choosing any
option from the drop down list.

Bleed You can set the amount of bleed for left, right, top and
bottom sides of the page by input the values to the four

5.4 Object

5.4.1 Import PDF Pages

This option is only effective when Free Style Imposition is performed. Select Object > Import
PDF Pages to import one or more pages to the plate you are working on. If you want to move
the imported page, firstly you need to high-light the imported page, and drag the page to any
position on the plate, or you can use the arrow keys to move the page.

Format Click the Edit button to set the label text format.

Color Type in the value to the Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black
fields to define the label text color.

Font Click the Choose button to the select the font and the font
size.

Position Type in the values for X and Y fields to locate the label text
position.

Direction Choose one of the four directions for the label text.

Automatic Offset Type in the values for the offset width and length.

Click Load to open the existing label text file. After completing Label Text Settings, click Save
to save the setup.

5.4.3 Tiling

The Tiling function is only available when Free Style Imposition (See Chapter 4.2) is
performed. First of all, you need to high-light all the pages on the plate by pressing the Ctrl +
A keys on the keyboard or select Edit > Select All. Then choose Object > Tile to set the file
width and height for each tiles of the plate.

Tiling Set the number of rows and columns by input the values to
the Columns and Rows fields.

Margins Set the vertical and horizontal distance each page by input
the values to X and Y fields. Choose a unit from the Unit drop
down list.

5.4.4 Align

The Align function is only available when Free Style Imposition (See Chapter 4.2) is
performed. High-light the pages that you want to align, go to Object > Align to set the
horizontal and vertical alignment of the selected pages.

5.4.5 Mark Object

Mark Click Load to load an existing mark object file or click Save
to save the setup. Decide which type of mark that you want
to use by selecting one of the three mark types: Crop Mark,
Registration Mark, and Center Mark. There are several
options for each of the mark types, simply choose one from
the drop down list.

Position Enter the values to X and Y fields to locate the mark


position.

Rotation You can rotate the mark by choosing one of the for rotation
options.

Automatic Offset Type in the values for the offset width and height.

Flip Choose Horizontal to flip the selected mark horizontally, or


choose Vertical to flip the selected mark vertically.

5.5 Layout File

You can save your most frequently used layout settings to speed up your productivity.

To create and save a layout file:

STEP 1 Select File > New Layout File.


STEP 2 After you have configured all the settings in the Layout Settings, click OK.
STEP 3 Choose File > Save to save this Layout File.

To open an existing layout file, choose File > Open Layout File, you will see the dialog as 5.5
