7 a) An I section joist ISWB 400 and 10 m long is used as a strut with one end fixed (8)
and the other end hinged. Taking E=2×105N/mm2, determine Euler’s crippling
load. (Given Ixx=23500 cm4, Iyy=1390 cm4)
b) Also find the safe load on the strut taking a factor of safety of 3. (2)
8 a) Analyse the beam shown in figure by Consistent deformation method. (7)

PART C
Answer any two questions, each carries 10 marks
9 Calculate the moments and reactions at the supports by three moment theorem. (10)
The support B sinks by 5mm. (Assume constant EI throughout the length of the
beam).
10 A beam ABC 10 m long, hinged at ends A and B is continuous over joint B and is (10)
loaded as shown in figure. Using the slope deflection method, compute the end
moments. The beam has constant EI for both the spans.
11 Analyse the portal frame shown in figure by moment distribution method. The (10)
frame is fixed at A and D and has rigid joints at B and C.

PART B
Answer any two questions, each carries 10 marks.
6 A beam of length 6m is simply supported at its ends and carries two point load of
50KN and 40KN at a distance of 1m and 3m respectively from the left support. Find
by conjugate beam method
1) Deflection under each load (7)
2) Slope at supports (3)
5
E=2X10 N/mm2 and I= 85X106 mm4
7 A rolled beam section has overall depth of 400mm and flange width of (10)
200mm.Thickness of web and flange is 20mm.When it is used as a simply
supported beam produces a mid span deflection 10mm due to a uniformly
distributed load of 30kN/m. Find crippling load when this section is used as column
with both ends hinged. Take E=2 X 10 5 N/mm2.
