MOSFET

A MOSFET is a field-effect transistor with a metal-oxide-semiconductor structure that uses a voltage applied to the gate terminal to control conduction between the drain and source terminals. There are two types of MOSFETs: depletion mode, which conducts with no gate voltage and less with increased voltage, and enhancement mode, which does not conduct with no gate voltage but does conduct with increased voltage. MOSFETs are commonly used as electronic switches and for functions like auto intensity control of street lights due to their high speed and low power characteristics compared to bipolar transistors.

What is a MOSFET?

MOSFET stands for metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor. It is a field-effect transistor

with a MOS structure. Typically, the MOSFET is a three-terminal device with gate (G), drain (D)
and source (S) terminals. Current conduction between drain (D) and source (S) is controlled by a
voltage applied to the gate (G) terminal. MOSFETs compare favorably with bipolar transistors in
terms of relatively high-speed and low-loss operation.

Types of MOSFET:-
i) N- channel
ii) P- channel

Types of MOSFET Devices:-

The MOSFET is classified into two types such as;

 Depletion mode MOSFET

 Enhancement mode MOSFET

Depletion Mode:-

When there is zero voltage on the gate terminal, the channel shows its maximum conductance. As the
voltage on the gate is negative or positive, then decreases the channel conductivity.
Enhancement Mode

When there is no voltage on the gate terminal the device does not conduct. More voltage applied on
the gate terminal; the device has good conductivity.

MOSFET Working Principle

The working of MOSFET depends upon the metal oxide capacitor (MOS) that is the main part of
the MOSFET. The oxide layer presents among the source and drain terminal. It can be set from p-
type to n-type by applying positive or negative gate voltages respectively. When apply the positive
gate voltage the holes present under the oxide layer with a repulsive force and holes are pushed
downward through the substrate. The deflection region populated by the bound negative charges
which are allied with the acceptor atoms.

only the leakage current is flow.as show in the following figures

2) When Load is connected after MOSFET with source terminal and V GS = 0V. In this configuration
no current is flow from the load.as show in the following figures
