Work Devices

This document discusses the key hardware components used to build computer networks, including routers, network interface cards, hubs, switches, network cables, bridges, and modems. It describes the functions of these devices and how they enable data transmission and routing. Specifically, routers route data between different network types using IP addresses and routing tables to determine the best path. Network interface cards connect devices to networks using either wired or wireless technology. Switches are more intelligent than hubs and use MAC addresses to efficiently direct data within a network. Bridges connect two networks together. Modems convert digital data to analog for transmission over telephone lines and vice versa.

Network Devices

Questions:
1. List 7 pieces of hardware that are used to build a network.

 Router
 Network Interface Cards
 Hubs
 Switches
 Network cable
 Bridge
 Modems

2. Describe what routers are used for.

Routers enable data to be sent (routed) between different types of networks.

3. Routers can be described as being ‘intelligent’ devices. Explain 3 functions that routers perform
that make them intelligent.

Routers are intelligent because:

1. They can read and decide where to send it
2. They can decide on the fastest route in which to send the data
3. They can make the format of the data suitable for network where it is being

4. What does IP address stand for?

Internet Protocal Address

5. Explain what an IP address is.

A computer or device’s IP addess determines it’s exact location.

6. How does a router store IP addresses?

Routers stores IP address in something called a routing table. The routing table lists all
of the different routes to other networks. The router use the routing table to
determine the best route to use when sending data to another network

7. Explain how a router uses IP addresses and a routing table to send data to its correct
destination.
Routers send packets of data between computers on different networks. Each data
packets contains the IP address of the computer/network that the data is being send to.
The router use the IP address to work out the best route in which to send the data to it’s

8. Find an image that shows how routers use IP addresses to send data to the correct destination
and paste it below:

9. Describe what network interface cards are used for.

Network Interface Cards are used to connect individual computers/devices to a

network

10. Describe the difference between a wired network interface card and a wireless network
interface card.
 Wired network interface card is the one where cables are used to connect
computers
 Wireless network interface card is the one where computers are connected
using Wi-Fi

10. Find 2 images that show how wired and wireless network interface cards connect computers to a
network and paste it below:

wired network

12. Describe what network cables are used for.

Network cables are plugged into computers wired network interface card and
connects it to the network

13. Describe 2 advantages that network cables hold over forming networks with wireless
technology.

 Cables can transfer data faster than wireless

 Data transferred over cables is more secure than over wireless .

14. Describe what hubs are used for.

15. Hubs can be described as being ‘unintelligent’ devices. Explain why hubs are considered
unintelligent.

16. Why would a network connected using a hub run very slowly?

17. Find an image of a network connected through a hub and paste below (Make sure to highlight
the problem of too much data flowing around the network in the image).

18. Explain what a switch is used for.

19. Switches are said to be ‘intelligent’ devices. Explain 3 functions that switches perform that make
them intelligent.

Switches are intelligent because:

1.
2.
.
3.

20. Find an image of a network connected through a switch and paste below (Make sure that the
image shows how switches use MAC addresses to control data flow).

21. Explain what a bridge is used for.

23. Explain what modems are used for.

24. What does modem stand for?

25. Explain how modems can convert data between analogue and digital so that it can be
transmitted over telephone lines.
