1
What I Need to Knowtives

This module is designed to equip you, learners, with essential knowledge, skills, and
attitude on Dividing Fractions.

This module is designed so you can pace yourself as you use them to achieve the
prescribed learning competencies. It also aims to prepare you to be at the forefront of
the fast-growing world of industry and in your quest for higher education, middle-skills
development, employment, and entrepreneurship.

HOW TO USE THIS MODULE

This module contains several lessons. To make the most out of them, you need to do
the following:
1. Scan the list of Learning Objectives to get an idea of the knowledge and skills you
are expected to gain and develop as you study the module. These outcomes are
based on the content standards, performance standards, and learning competencies
of the K to 12 Curriculum Mathematics 5.
2. Take the What I Know. Your score will determine your knowledge of the lessons in
the module. If you get 100% of the items correctly, you may proceed to the next
module. Otherwise, you must go through the lessons.
3. Each Lesson aims to develop one of the learning objectives set for the module. It
starts with an activity that will help you understand the lesson and meet the required
competencies.
4. Take your time in reading this module. Write down points for clarification. You may
discuss these points with your teacher.
5. Perform all activities and answer all worksheets. The activities and assessments
are designed to enhance your understanding of the lesson. The activities will also give
you an idea how well you understand the lessons. Review the lessons if necessary,
until you have achieved a satisfactory level of understanding.
6. At the end of the module, take the Post-Assessment to evaluate your overall
understanding about the lessons.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the module, you should be able to:
• compare and arrange decimal numbers
• add and subtract decimal numbers through thousandths
without and with regrouping

2
What I Know

Let us determine how much you already know about comparing and
arranging decimal and adding and subtracting decimal numbers. If you are
done and got 8 correct answers well done, you may skip this module. If you
got 0 - 7 correct answers, you can do better by proceeding with the module.

3
What’s In?

SELF CHECK. Read and answer the following problem.

1) Round 65.7634 to the nearest thousandths. __________

2) Linda has a cat that weights 18.95 kilograms. Round 18.95 to the
nearest tenths. __________
3) Earth travels around the sun at a speed of about 29.783 km per
second. Round 29.783 to the nearest hundredths. __________

What’s New?

Let us learn Compare and Arrange Decimal Numbers and Adding and
Subtracting Decimals.

To compare decimals, compare the values of the digits in the same

place value, starting from the left.

If the number of decimal places is not the same, zeroes may be added
to the right of the decimal to have an equal number of decimal places.

To add decimals, align the decimal points in a straight column. Add as

in whole numbers. Align the decimal point in the sum with the decimal points
in the addends. If the sum of the digits is 10 or more, regroup the decimal.
Use the decimal point to separate the whole number from the decimal number
in the sum.

When subtracting decimals align first the decimal point just as

addition. Regroup the decimals if necessary.

4
What is It?

Our lesson today is about comparing and ordering decimal numbers

and Adding and Subtracting Decimals. We can present this through
illustrations, or models.

LESSON 1: Ordering Decimal Numbers:

Example 1:

Dindo was asked to cut five pieces of wire measuring close to 15.125 cm
in length. The record shows the length of the wires Dindo cut. Which wire is
the shortest? Longest?

Record Sheet
Piece Number Length (cm)
1 15.182
2 15.147
3 15.087
4 15.097
5 15.18

To answer the problem, compare the length of the wires.

First piece: 15.182 2>0 15.182 > 15.180

Last piece: 15.180 0<2 15.180 < 15.182

Answer: The first piece is longer than the last piece.

Compare the measurement of the wires. One place value at a time.

Second piece: 15.147 Third piece: 15.087 Fourth piece: 15.097

Third piece: 15.087 Fourth piece: 15.097 Fifth piece: 15.18

1>0 8<9 0<1
So, 15.147 > 15.087 So, 15.087 < 15.097 So, 15.097 < 15.180

List the numbers from greatest to least.

Answer: 15.182, 15.180, 15.147, 15.097, 15. 087

greatest least

5
Example 2:
Compare 0.7 and 0.45 using block models.

It means 7 out of 10 parts. It means 45 out of 100 parts.

The block models above show that:

A. 0.7 is more than 0.45 (0.7 > 0.45); and
B. 0.45 is less than 0.7 (0.45 < 0.7 )

Therefore, 0.7 is heavier than 0.45

Example 3:
Compare 23.547 and 23.5391.

Line up the decimal points. Add 0 to 23.547 to have an equal number of

digits, then compare the digits in the hundredths places since the digits in
the tenths places are the same.

23.5470 4 is more than 3

23.5391 Therefore, 23.547 > 23.5391

Example 4:
Arrange each set of decimals from least to greatest and greatest to least.
1) 0.256, 0.247, 0.29, 0.26

0.256 In all the decimals, the digit 2 is in the tenths place.

0.247 Therefore, compare the digits in the hundredths place:
0.29 5, 4, 9, and 6.
0.26
From least to greatest: 0.247, 0.256, 0.26, 0.29
From greatest to least: 0.29, 0.26, 0.256, 0.247

6
LESSON 2: Adding and Subtracting Decimals
Jody bought a kilogram of sugar for Php 52.50, a bottle of vinegar for
Php 15.25, and a sachet of shampoo for Php 5.50. If Jody paid Php 100.00,
how much was her change?
We can use the block model approach to solve the problem.
Php 100.00

Php 52.50 Php 15.25 Php5.50 ?

There are two steps in solving the problem.

1) Add the prices of the three items. Follow these steps in adding decimals.
A. Align the B. Add the C. Add the tenths D. Add the ones
decimal points. hundredths digits. and tens
digits. digits.
Php 52.50 Php 52.50 Php 52.50 Php 52.50
+ Php 15.25 + Php 15.25 + Php 15.25 + Php 15.25
Php 5.50 Php 5.50 Php 5.50 Php 5.50
5 25 Php 73.25

The total amount of the three items is Php 73.25.

2) Solve for the change by subtracting Php 73.25 from Php 100.00. follow
these steps in subtracting decimals.

A. Align the B. Regroup and C. Subtracts D. Subtract E. Subtract

decimal subtract the the tenths the ones the tens
points. hundredths digits. digits. digits. digits.
99 910 99 910 99 910 99 910
Php 100.00 Php 100.00 Php 100.00 Php 100.00 Php 100.00
-Php 73.25 -Php 73.25 -Php 73.25 -Php 73.25 - Php 73.25
5 .75 6.75 Php 26.75

Therefore, Jody’s change is Php 26.75.

7
What’s More

A) Compare the decimals by writing >, < or =.

Write your answer on the space provided.

1) 56.932 __________ 56.099

B) Arrange each set of decimals from least to greatest.

4) 3.476, 3.059, 3.486 _______, _______, _______

5) 15.36, 15.4932, 1.567, 15.599 _______, _______, _______, _______

C) Arrange 5.6125, 56.125, 56.235, 561.5 from greatest to least.

6. _______, _______, _______, _______

D) Perform the indicated operation. Write your answer in the box.

7) 35.8 8) 12.44 9) 69.422 10) 86.353
10.714 64.2 - 25.361 - 8.142
+ 4.621 + 2.369
