Week 11 Patho

Blunt force trauma to the head can cause traumatic brain injuries and skull fractures. Traumatic brain injuries occur when the brain is shaken inside the skull and can result in concussions or contusions. There are different types of skull fractures including linear, depressed, diastatic, and basilar fractures. Intracranial bleeding can also occur from blunt force head trauma in the form of epidural, subdural, subarachnoid, or intraparenchymal hemorrhages. Damage to the brain is dependent on the location and severity of the impact.

Blunt trauma is a type of physical injury brought on by an impact with a blunt object or
surface but without penetration. In other words, a severe head injury is a blunt force head trauma.
Blunt force trauma to the head is frequently seen in accidents, suicides, and homicide situations.
The main problem with the blunt force trauma to the head is that it can result in a traumatic brain
injury (TBI). TBIs can impact many different areas, even though traumatic head trauma is the
most common cause of them. Damage to the skull, eyes, face, and neck are among these. Soft
tissue regions like the nose and jaw can sustain contusions, which are wounds akin to bruises.
Concussion injuries and contusions are two different forms of injuries that can result from blunt
force head trauma. While a contusion results in a direct injury to the brain, a concussion is
produced by the brain shaking. In severe situations, the side of the brain opposite the impact
location may also sustain damage. There are various kinds of head injuries. A concussion, can
cause a sudden loss of awareness or alertness that lasts for a few minutes to several hours after
the traumatic event. When the cranial bone, sometimes referred to as the skull, breaks, it is said
to have a skull fracture. Intracranial hematoma is the medical term for a collection of blood
inside the skull. A burst cerebral blood vessel is usually the cause.
There are different kinds of skull fractures. If you have a depressed skull fracture, you
might or might not have a cut on your scalp. This kind of fracture results in the depressing of a
portion of the skull. Linear skull fractures, the most frequent type, cause bone breaks but the
bone stays in place. Diastatic skull fractures occur along the suture line of the skull, which is
where the head bones meld together throughout childhood. The fracture, which is frequent in
newborns and older infants, lengthens the suture line. Basilar fractures are the most serious type
of skull fractures, result in damaged bones at the base of the skull. Bruising behind the ear and
around the eyes is a symptom of the fracture.

As for intracranial hemorrhages, there are 4 types of hemorrhages. Epidural hemorrhage,

subdural hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and intraparenchymal hemorrhage are the four
main kinds of intracranial bleeding. An epidural hematoma may have venous or arterial origin.
After a blow to the head, usually to the temporal area, the classic artery epidural hematoma
develops. When blood leaks into the subdural space, which is anatomically the arachnoid space,
subdural bleeding takes place. The most common cause of subdural hemorrhage is a stretched,
damaged, or torn blood vessel that runs between the brain and skull. When this happens, blood
starts to seep into the subdural region. When there is a subarachnoid hemorrhage, the
subarachnoid bleeds. Subarachnoid hemorrhage can be classified as either traumatic or non-
traumatic. The brain parenchyma itself is bleeding due to intraparenchymal hemorrhage.
