Lab Probability

The document summarizes an experimental biology lab assignment on binomial probability distributions. It includes: 1) Calculating the probabilities of 0, 1, 2, or 3 positive responses out of 3 patients being treated, where the treatment is successful 25% of the time. 2) Drawing a probability histogram showing the binomial distribution and probabilities. 3) Calculating the cumulative probabilities of seeing 0, 1, 2, or 3 positive responses. 4) Shading the bars on the histogram representing the cumulative probability of seeing 0 or 1 positive responses, representing the left tail of the distribution.

A. BINOMIAL PROBLEM

a. Probability distribution: suppose a treatment is successful 25% of the time.

The treatment is used in 3 patients. Using the binomial formula learned in the
class, calculate the probability of seeing 0 of three positive responses. Then,
calculate the probability of seeing 1 response, 2 response and 3 responses.
These probabilities comprise the probability distribution X b (n=3, p=0.25),

i. Pr (X=0)

Pr (X=0) = n! p x q n-x
= n!
(n-x)! x!

= 3! 0.25 0 0.75 3
(3-0)! 0!
=1 27/64
= 27/64

ii. Pr (X=1)

Pr (X=1) = n! p x q n-x
= n!
(n-x)! x!
= 3! 0.25 1 0.75 2
= n!
(3-1)! 1!
= 3 9/64
= 27/64

iii. Pr (X=2)

Pr (X=2) = n! p x q n-x
= =
n! n!
(n-x)! x!
= 3! 0.25 2 0.75 1
= n! = n!
(3-2)! 2!
= 3 3/64
= n!
= 9/64
iv. Pr (X=3)

Pr (X=3) = n! p x q n-x
= n!
= n!
(n-x)! x!
= 3! 0.25 3 0.75 0
= n! = n!
(3-3)! 3!
= 1 1/64
= n!
= 1/64

b. Draw a probability histogram of your binomial distribution with “# of

successes” on the x-axis and “probability” on y-axis. The area under histogram
bar corresponds to the probability of each outcome.

1 0.4219

c. The cumulative probability of an event is the probability of seeing exactly that

number or less. Calculate the following cumulative probabilities:

Pr (X≤0) = Pr (X=0)
= 27/64
Pr (X≤1) = Pr (X=0) + Pr (X=1)
= 27/64 + 27/64
= 27/32
Pr (X≤2) = Pr (X=0) + Pr (X=1) + Pr (X=2)
= 27/64 + 27/64 + 9/64
= 63/64
Pr (X≤3) = Pr (X=0) + Pr (X=1) + Pr (X=2) + Pr (X=3)
= 27/64 + 27/64 + 9/64 + 1/64
=1

d. On the histogram you create in part b, shade the bars corresponding to Pr

(X=0) and Pr (X=1). This represents Pr (X≤1). Notice that this is the area in
the LEFT TAIL of distribution.
