1) Find the 23rd term of the arithmetic sequence 2, 9, 16, 23,….

Solution:
a1 = 2 n = 23 d = 9 – 2 = 7, 16 – 9 = 7
an = a1 + (n – 1)d
a23 = 2 + (23 – 1)(7)
= 2 + 22(7)
a23 = 2 + 154 = 156
2) Find the 41st term of the arithmetic sequence 100, 97, 94, 91,….
Solution:
a1 = 100 n = 41 d=-3
an = a1 + (n – 1)d
a41 = 100 + (41 – 1)(-3)
= 100 + 40(-3)
= 100 + - 120
= - 20

therefore the 41st term of the sequence is - 20


3) Find the 10th term of the sequence – 37, - 34, - 31, …
a1 = - 37 n = 10 d=+3
– 37, - 34, - 31, - 28, - 25, - 22, -19, -16, -13, - 10
a10 = - 37 + (10 – 1)(3)
= - 37 + 9(3)
= - 37 + 27
= - 10, therefore the 10th term of the sequence is - 10
1. Which term of the sequence 13, 6 , - 1, … is – 85?
Solution:
a1 = 13 n=? an = - 85 d = - 7
an = a1 + (n – 1)d
- 85 = 13 + (n – 1)(- 7)
- 85 – 13 = - 7n + 7
- 98 = - 7n + 7
- 98 – 7 = - 7n
- 105 = - 7n
n = 15
therefore, - 85 is the 15th term.

2. Which term of the sequence 5, 9, 13, 17, … is 93?


Solution: 21, 25,
a1 = 5 an = 93 d= 4 n=?
an = a1 + (n – 1)d
93 = 5 + (n – 1)(4)
93 – 5 = 4n – 4
88 = 4n – 4
88 + 4 = 4n
92 = 4n
n = 23
therefore, 93 is the 23rd term.
