Seguin Form Board Test (SFB; Seguin 1907)

Introduction

What does SFB measure?

Seguin Form Board test is the commonly used performance test. It is the speed test that
measures accuracy. It measures the ‘g’ factor of intelligence. It assesses visuospatial
perception, organisation and discrimination, psychomotor dexterity, coordination and
development, motor and cognitive speed (Cattel, 1953;David and Virginia, 1972; Venkatesan,
2014) for children between the age of 4 years to 20 years. It is also used as a quick measure
of general intelligence in children between the age of 3 years to 11 years and for mentally
retarted adults.

Reasons for using SFB

It takes very less time, elicits good interest and motivation from children to participate, ease
of scoring and it can be administered to all types of children including those who have speech
impairment, where there are language incompatibility, issues across socio-economic and
educational background. SFB is considered to be one of the few ‘culture-fair tests’ currently.

Is SFB used for diagnosing intellectual disability?

SFB is taken as one of the corroborative findings for assessing intelligence. One of the
limitations is that it does not measure the aspects of intellect which are abstract thinking,
reasoning, social and adaptive functions etc.

Correlation
To measure the correlation of SFB with other tests, a study (Goel and Bhargava, 1990; Goel
and Sen, 1984) conducted to assess the suitability and applicability of SFB to all the
intellectually disabled children (Goel and Sen, 1984). The following tests were administered,
Draw-a-Man Test (DAP;Pathak, 1956); Seguin Form Board, Colored Progressive Matrices
(CPM, Raven 1956), Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT; Dunn,1959), Stanford-Binet
Test (S-B; Terman and Merrill, 1937) and VSMS, on the population of 60 children who
were earlier diagnosed with intellectual disability. The study findings report moderate
correlation within the range of 0.31 to 0.50 between SFB and the other tests.

Instructions to administer SFB

Position: The board’s position is so placed that the star is toward the examiner. With the
subject watching, the ten pieces are stacked in three piles, starting⬡ with the rectangle, in the
order shown by the numbers below:

Top Examiner’s left Middle Examiner’s right

Hexagon ⬡ (3) Triangle ⃤ (7) Diamond◆(10)
Oval ⭖ (2) Cross ╳ (6)
Square ⬜ (5) Circle ◯ (9)
Bottom Rectangle ▭ (1) Half-circle ⯊ (4) Star ☆ (8)

Instructions:
- For the child with proper hearing say, ‘ Put these back as fast as you can, ready, go’.
- Start the stopwatch when you give the command.
- Count any fraction of a second as a whole second. If any block is left partly outside,
resting on the edge instead of fitting into the recess, do not record the time but treat
the trial as incomplete.
- Call the subject’s attention to the fact that the block or blocks were not complete in
place.
- For the deaf subject indicate with a gesture that the blocks are all to go back in their
places. Use any manual sign for fast with which he is familiar.
- Blocks should be stacked by the examiner rapidly, but without any suggestion of
nervous haste; memorise the bottom to top order; to avoid any hesitation. Say nothing
during the progress of a trial.
- Make sure that the subject does not start before the signal is given.
- The test consists of three trials, including any trial marked incomplete.

Scoring and interpretation:

- The score is the shortest time in seconds out of the three trials.
- Convert the score into Mental age (MA) by referring to the norms. Compute
intelligence quotient (IQ) by the formula IQ (MA/CA) X 100 where CA is
chronological age.
Note: Minimum MA- 3 years 5 months; Maximum MA- 10 years
Maximum CA- 16 years (192 months)

IQ interpretation

Profound: 0- 20 (Disability - 100%)

Severe: 21- 35 (Disability - 90%)
Moderate: 36- 54 (Disability - 75%)
Mild: 55-69 (Disability - 50%)
Borderline: 70-84 (Disability - 25%
