1. INTRODUCTION
The report presented is on the soil investigation carried out Kerja-kerja Penyiasatan Tanah
Dan Ujian Makmal Bagi Projek Cadangan Menggantikan Jambatan Sedia Ada Di
Jambatan FT006/041/93 Barat Daya, Pulau Pinang. The client is Jabatan Kerja Raya
Malaysia.
Deep Rocks Sdn. Bhd. was awarded the contract to carry out the soil investigation work for
the proposed project. Originally two (2) numbers of deep boreholes was carried out to obtain
the geotechnical information of the above site.
2. SCOPE OF WORKS
i. Explored the subsoil condition at the proposed site by two (2) exploration boreholes.
ii. Carried out Standard Penetration Test.
iii. Obtain disturbed and undisturbed samples.

3. FIELD EXPLORATION
a) BORING
Field exploration was carried out using multi-speed rotary boring machine and tripod.
These boreholes were drilled by local trained drillers under direct supervision of our
technicians according to instructions and specifications given.
The boreholes were lined with NW casings of 75 mm. Outer diameter to prevent the
collapse of the boreholes wall. These boreholes were washed by circulating water and
disturbed samples were collected for visual examination.
b) STANDARD PENETRATION TEST
The Standard Penetration Test (SPT) was carried out at 1.5 m interval. Basically, the
test was conducted by dropping a self - tripping hammer of 63.5 kg from a fixed
height of 75 cm. The numbers of blow for the initial 15 cm was recorded as the
seating drive.
The N value is the number of blows to penetrate the subsequent 45 cm. Nevertheless,
if the number of blows ever reached 50, the test was terminated and the corresponding
penetration recorded. Each sample obtained from the sampler in the field was
examined and classified by our technicians.
Representation portions of each sample were sealed in polythene bags and labeled
indicating and depth taken and send to our laboratory. Standard Penetration Test
results were shown in the boring logs as shown in APPENDIX A.

4. LABORATORY TEST
The following laboratory tests were carried out in accordance with the procedure in BS.
1377 Part 2: 1990 and BS. 1377 Part 3: 1990 on selected samples of various penetrations
(APPENDIX B).
