Answer all questions in this section
1. a) Explain, with a specific example, why the dimensional homogeneity of a physical equation does not
guarantee its correctness.
b) The gravitational potential energy, U, of an object on the surface of the earth is given by

2. A and B are two wires of the same length and thickness. Figure 1 show how the extension (e) of each of the
materials varies with the tensile force on it when the material is stretched and unstretched.

a) Name a phenomenon exhibited by Wire B but not Wire A.
b) Estimate the area enclosed by the stretching curve and the unstretching curve of Wire B.
c) During the deformation, the temperature of Wire B rises while that of Wire A does not. Use your answer
in b) above to explain why.

3. The specific heat capacity of a liquid is 1400 J kg-1 K-1.


a) Explain the meaning of the underlined phrase.
b) A mercury-in-glass thermometer is used to measure the temperature of 32.0 g of the above liquid and the
true temperature of the liquid is 54.0 oC. The bulb of the thermometer has a mass of 12.0 g and an average
specific heat capacity of 180 J kg-1 K-1. If the initial temperature of the bulb is 19.0 oC,
(i) determine the steady temperature recorded by the thermometer when the bulb is placed inside the
liquid.
(ii) Explain why a thermocouple would have been more suitable in measuring the temperature of the
liquid.

4. a) Define the following terms as used in current electricity.

b) (i) What is a photon?


In figure 4, a beam of light with a wavelength of 620 nm falls on a metal surface.

The beam has a cross-sectional area of 1.2  10-3 m2 and an intensity of 5.0  10-2 W m-2.
(ii) Show that the energy of each photon of the light is 3.2  10-19 J.
(iii) How many photons fall on the metal surface every second.
(iv) The metal has a work function of 2.4 eV. Explain whether or not electrons will be ejected from the
metal surface when the light is incident on it.

c) In figure 5, a stream of electrons moving at a speed of 3.0  107 m s-1 enter a uniform electric field between
two metal plates.

the electrons between the plates.
(ii) What is the magnitude of the electric force on each electron as it moves through the field?

6. d) (i) Distinguish between momentum and impulse of a moving object.
(ii) Describe an experiment to demonstrate the law of conservation of linear momentum. Your
description should include a diagram, procedure, observations, calculations, precaution and
conclusion.

e) A nucleus of potassium-40 decays into a stable nucleus of argon-40 by the emission of a radioactive
radiation. The incomplete nuclear equation of the decay process is shown below.

(i) Copy and complete the above equation to show the particle emitted.
A certain sample of rocks contains 1.2  10-6 g of potassium-40 and 7.0  10-6 g of trapped argon-40 gas.
Potassium-40 has a half-life of 1.3  109 years.
(ii) Assuming that all the argon gas originated from the decay of potassium-40 and that none has escaped
from the rocks, calculate the mass of potassium-40 that was present when the rocks were first formed.
(iii) Determine the decay constant of potassium-40 and the age of the rock.

f) Figure 6 shows a piston and a cylinder used in a car engine. The piston makes 900 oscillations every
minute and the amplitude of oscillation is 18 cm.

The horizontal movement of the piston between positions AB and CD about the midpoint (O) is
approximately simple harmonic. Frictional forces are negligible.
(i) Sketch a graph to show how the kinetic energy (E) of the piston varies with the displace (x) from O.
(ii) Determine the magnitude of the acceleration of the piston when it is at AB.

7. Oxygen gas at a temperature of 20 oC in a cylinder with a moveable piston is heated so that it undergoes an
isothermal expansion. Experiments show that for an isothermal expansion, the volume of the gas (V) is related
to the quantity of heat (Q) supplied to it by the following equation.

8. a) Figure 7 shows the main features of a hydroelectric power plant.

The above plant is an example of a renewable energy source.


(i) Explain the meaning of the underlined phrase.
(ii) Describe the energy changes taking place at the penstock, the turbine and the generator.
(iii) If 120 cubic metres of water pass through the spiral casing every second and the plant has an efficiency
of 80%, determine the electrical power output of the plant.
(iv) Explain why the thickness of the dam increases progressively towards the base

b) (i) What is global warming?
(ii) Describe one consequence of global warming on the environment and one consequence on human
health.
(4 marks)
c) A solar cooker consists of a curved reflecting surface that concentrates sunlight onto the object to be
warmed as shown in figure 8. Sunlight enters the cooker through the circular transparent surface

The intensity of the solar radiation falling on the transparent surface is 600 W m -2 and the cooker has an
efficiency of 40%.
(i) Determine how long it will take to raise the temperature of 2.0 kg of water from 22 oC to 40 oC.
Neglect the heat capacity of the container of the water.
(ii) Just above the earth’s atmosphere, the intensity of solar radiation is about 1.4 kW m -2. State one
reason why on the surface of the earth, the intensity of solar radiation is far less.

(ii) State two advantages of optical fibres compared with coaxial cables in long-distance communication.
(iii) A station on earth transmits a signal with an initial power of 3.1 kW to a geostationary satellite.
Calculate the power received by the satellite if the signal suffers an attenuation of 190 dB.

b) (i) Distinguish between amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency modulation (FM) as used in radio
communication
(ii) Draw a block diagram of an AM radio receiver.

c) (i) What is a base station?
(ii) State two different techniques that can be used to improve coverage and capacity in this cellular
system.

10. a) (i) What is an intrinsic semiconductor?


(ii) Explain how a change in temperature affects the conductivity of an intrinsic semiconductor.
(iii) How does the depletion layer of a p-n junction differ from the p and n regions?

b) Figure 9 shows the output characteristics of a transistor.

(i) Draw a circuit diagram that can be used to obtain the results shown in figure 9.
(ii) Plot a graph of IC on the vertical axis against IB on the horizontal axis for a constant VCE of 4.0 V
(iii) Use the graph in b)(ii) above to determine the current gain of the above transistor.

c) (i) What is an electronic gate?
(ii) Establish the truth table for a NOR gate.

11. a) (i) Draw and describe the basic structure of the human ear.
(ii) Consider the ear to be a pipe closed at one end and that the length of the human auditory canal is
approximately 28 mm. What is the fundamental frequency of the auditory canal if the velocity of
sound in the air is 340 m s-1?
(iii) The Ossicles in the ear act as levers. What does that mean?

b) The ultrasound required for medicine is normally generated and detected using a piezoelectric transducer.
(i) State the energy conversion that takes place in a piezoelectric transducer. Give a brief description of
the piezoelectric effect.
(ii) Briefly explain how an ultrasound image is created.
(5 marks)
c) Fibre optics have an extraordinary impact in the medical field
(i) What property of light is made use of in the optical fibre?
(ii) Describe briefly the use of optical fibres in endoscopy.
