OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson the pupils CAN

• Demonstrates understanding of the basic concepts of timbre and
dynamics

Learn About It!

Timbre

What is timbre?

Timbre is the quality of sound produced either by human voice or

musical device. It is also the sound coming from your voice box when
you sing a song. It is also the sound produced through vibration when
you strum the strings of your guitar. Other musical instruments' sounds
can be produced by hitting, such as percussion instruments (Example:
drum or gong); plucking such as string instruments (Example: guitar);
and blowing such as wind instruments (Example: flute, trumpet, etc.).

Human voice can be categorized as male and female voices.

Male voice refers to tenor and bass, while female voice refers to
soprano and alto. Some well-known male singers/performers have these
vocal ranges: Jed Madela - tenor, Yael Yuson - bass, Mrs. Regine
Velasquez-Alcasid-soprano, and Aiza Seguerra - alto.

Did you know that...

listening to music can improve our mood? In a study conducted by

researchers from Pennsylvania University, results showed that students who
listened to music — almost any type of music — reported feeling more joyful,
optimistic, friendly, calm, and relaxed.

What is voice production technique?

Voice production technique refers to how you are using your voice
appropriately in order to produce a quality sound. The following
techniques will help you attain a quality voice in singing:

1. Use head tone - This is also called the head voice. This is done by
extending your singing voice from the lowest to the highest level.
2. Employ proper breathing - This can be done by taking a deep breath
while singing. It is just like learning how to control your breath to
produce a high resonating voice. Consider the following guidelines on
proper breathing:

Take a deep breath and hold it for two seconds.

Breathe slowly.
Try to relax your chest and shoulders.

3. How to use the diaphragm - Keep your diaphragm relaxed as you fill
it with air. Try to sit in a relaxed manner. Use good posture while doing
this activity.
What are high and low sounds?

Human voice can create high and low sounds. Musical instruments
too, produce high and low sounds. These sounds also differ in quality.
For example, the drum and timpani, which are both percussion
instruments, have low sound but they differ in the quality of having a low
sound. Study more about them.

There are musical instruments and animals sounds that produce

similar sound. Look at the pictures below. Can you name them?

Sounds of Instruments Animal’s sounds

What are musical instruments that produce varied sounds?

Musical instruments are important accompaniment in making music.

Their sounds vary in volume depending on the player of the instrument.
The various sounds make music more interesting. The sounds also
provide rhythm and beat when singing and chatting.

Musical instruments could be considered as pitched on non-pitched.

Non-pitched instruments are: drums, cymbals, castanets, wood blocks,
bells, etc., while pitched percussion include piano and xylophone. These
are played by means of shaking, beating, striking, and scraping. Study
them below.
DYNAMICS
Sounds around us come in different forms. For example, a loud
sound may be annoying, but a soft sound may have a calming effect
to the one who listens to it. A mother who puts her baby to sleep
may hum a soothing melody. This means that the intensity of sound
in music affects the listeners' mood. Composers arrange the musical
sounds from loud to getting louder, loud to soft, or from soft to
getting softer, or soft to loud in order to add meaning to the song.

What is dynamics?
Dynamics refers to the level of loudness and softness of sound in
music composition. Composers use the Italian terms to identify each
sound level. Study them on the table below.
