HARRIS @ COUNTY H oO SHERIFF ED GONZALEZ SHERIF E'S PEW OF FIG € 1200 Baker Steet, Houston, Texas 77002 * (346) 266-1600 * www.sheriff ctx net January 9, 2023 Ed Gonzalez, Sheriff 1200 Baker St Houston, Texas 77002 Dear Sheriff Gonzalez, First and foremost, | would like to thank you and Retired Chief Deputy Edison Toquica for the opportunity that has been afforded to me here at the Harris Co. Sheriff's Office. The experiences and challenges that | have faced has forced me to grow as a person and as a leader ‘When Chief Toquica approached me about the possibility of coming here back in September of 2019, Iwas completely blown away by the trust and faith that he put into me when we really did not know one another or each other's history. From that initial conversation and through subsequent off-site meetings, that trust and bond continued to grow. Up until the day | made the decision to take that leap and accept the offer that was on the table, | felt many emotions. happy, excited, scared, fear, joy and just thankful that someone recognized all of the hard work that | had put into my profession over the previous 30 years of my career. It was truly one of those times where | felt all of the years of traveling the state conducting inspections and meeting some truly amazing people had finally paid off. There is nothing more satisfying than having that excitement of feeling wanted, needed and appreciated. While my time here has been one of mixed emotions. HCSO has some of the most amazing people | have ever had the privilege of meeting and working with. A large percentage of staff here go above and beyond on a daily basis to protect each other, our inmates and the general public, While working in the jail is not a glamorous or flashy job, itis a noble profession and one that needs to be recognized as such. These people walk amongst some of the most violent and evil people on this earth. Yet, they continue to toe the line under less than ideal circumstances on a daily basis. In my two years at HCSO, we have navigated the following of which are still ongoing: 1) the Covid-19 pandemic; 2) staffing deficiencies; 3) a large felony case backlog which lead to overcrowding and outsourcing; and 4) transitioned correctional health providers from HCSO to Harris Health. These are just the ones off the top of my head. While | pushed myself to new limits, the results were not always what I/we expected. | have no regrets and there is very little that | would change. However, | feel that you and Chief Lee want to move in a new direction and | do not feel as | have a place in that vision. | tespect your decision(s) Itis with a heavy heart that | am submitting my two week notice effective today. My last physical day at HCSO will be Friday, January 20, 2023. Thank you for the opportunity to lead and serve these fine men and women over the last two years. | have developed numerous friendships and created bonds that will last a lifetime. Again, thank you for this wonderful opportunity that | will cherish for the rest of my God given life, | wish you and the staff here nothing but the best moving forward. Sincerely, Shaman f ena = Shannon J. Herklotz Asst. Chief of Detentions Harris Co. Sheriff's Office
