2.2 Location code

The location code has a length of 4 characters, starting with a “+” (plus) followed by one (1) letter and
two (2) numbers.
Within these locations, sub-locations are defined. A two-character number defines a sub-location. If no
sub-location can be determined for a component, the number 00 is used to indicate the location in
general.

2.3 Function code

The function code indicates the function of the component. The function code always starts with a “-
“(minus). Installations are divided into several systems; with each there own specific function.
Functions are indicated with a one (1) character number. Where sub-functions are applicable, the
function code will be followed by a two (2) character number.
The function code is not always applicable for a component. When a function code is not relevant, the
function code is omitted from the symbol code.

2.4 Component code

The component code indicates the technical function of a part. It consists of a single character
indicating the general function of the part. A one (1) character number indicates the sub-type
specifying the function in more detail. Sub-type numbers are specific for one type or group of types.
(See tables 2 and 3).
When multiple parts with an equal component number are in use, the component sub-type number
shall be a two (2) character number.

2.5 Symbol code

A symbol code is composed from three parts as described in the prior chapters:
Location code

Function code

Component code

Sub Component
Code (Additional)

+ A 12 - 1 00 A 1 00 -A 10

The symbol codes can be found on or near the component itself as well as in the electrical drawings
and schematics.

Due to lack of space, the location code is often not stated on the component. In a cabinet where every
thing in and on this cabinet has he same location code as the cabinet itself, the components are
tagged with the symbol code without the location code. On drawings and schematics, the location
code is integrated in the title block. The components on the schematics are tagged without the location
code.

Example:

1) +A20-132B46

This is the 6th pressure (4) transducer (B) in the installation. It is used for system 132 and is physically
placed in location A20.

2) +L00-E41

This is a not specifically defined (“various”) component (E) positioned in location +L00.

The drawings contain al lot of information about the electrical installation. In order to find relevant
information quickly, the following examples show the search path of some typical problems.

Example 1: Find information about an electrical component located outside a cabinet.

Step 1 Find the component code

The component code is located on or near the component. If there is no component
code available, go to the next step.
Step 2 Find the cable code
The component we are looking for is not situated inside a cabinet and can therefore
not be found in the materials list of the drawings. The way to find information is
through the cable code.
The cable code is found near the connection of the cable to the component.
Step 3 Find the cable in the cable index
The cable index contains an overview of all cables, sorted on cable code.

Figure 1 Example cable index

The cable index shows the start and destination of the cable. Also the first
occurrence of the cable in the drawings is stated in the Pos. column (The cable
type, size and number of wires could also be retrieved from the cable index at this
point).
Step 4 Read the information
Locate the page and column, stated in the Pos. field in the binder(s).

Copyright Huisman Filename: Directives for use codes.doc Page 26 of 29

HUISMAN EQUIPMENT BV

Example 2: Determine the contact of a loose wire

Step 1 Determine the location

The location of a cabinet is tagged on the outside of the cabinet.
Step 2 Read the wire number
The wire number is physically attached to the wire with single sign number tags.
Step 3 Find the drawing for this wire
The wire number indicates the page number and wire index. Together with te
location code of the cabinet this leads tot the correct page in the binder(s).
Step 4 Locate the wire
The wire has to be located visually. In general, the wires on a drawing are
numbered top to bottom and left to right.

Figure 2 Example of electrical; drawing detail

The wire can be contacted to one or more components. All components can be
checked on a missing wire using the drawing.
If a component was completely unwired, more than one drawing might be needed.
If a component has no bottom right reference to other drawings, this indicates that
this drawing is the source page for this component. Below the component a list of
contacts is drawn:

Figure 3 Example of component contacts

This list shows all contacts and associated columns. Contacts 1 and 2 are located
at column 11, and so on.

Copyright Huisman Filename: Directives for use codes.doc Page 27 of 29

HUISMAN EQUIPMENT BV

Example 3: Determine the location of a component that has to be replaced in a cabinet.

Step 1 Determine the component code

Retrieve the component code from the component that has to be replaced. This is
possible by reading it from the defected component, or by reading it from the order,
or otherwise.

Step 2 Find a cabinet layout drawing.

Look in the page index at the location code of the component. If no location is
found, then look backwards, searching in a more general location

Figure 4 Example page index

On the consecutive pages cabinet fronts are drawn.

Figure 5 Example cabinet layout

Browse the cabinet drawings until the component is found.
