Using Leaves of Cogon Grass as an Alternative in Making Food Packages

Introduction

According to United Nations Environment Program as of 2021, Philippines is the fourth

(4th) country that produce largest amount of solid waste in Southeast Asia.

Approximately, there is 14.66 million tons of garbages that are being produced within

only a year. As a student who wants to be a part on solving this major problem that we’re

facing, I found a research on how to lessen the huge number of waste on our country

especially the non-biodegradable trash.

In this research they are working on food packages. We all know that food take outs are

demanding this time of pandemic. There are lots of food delivery and door to door

transactions. Many of the food packagings are made out of non-biodegradable materials

such as styrofoam and plastic that takes hundred years to decompose. It is one of the

reasons why land, air and water pollutions are being occur. They are thinking of

alternative materials to use instead of plastic and styrofoam at the same time, can be

found anywhere and doesn’t affect the environment of they will be used.

They found out that the leaves of cogon grass “Imperata Cylindrica” has a potential to be

use as an alternative. It has sharp parts that could be dangerous for the people who might

touch it, to avoid its nuisance to other people, we could use and cut the cogon grass that
grows in a public place. It’s commonly found in Southeast Asian Countries. Cogon grass

grows from 2 to over 4 feet in a year. It has so many benefits like preventing soil erosion,

paper making, and forage.

Cogon grass food packaging are more practical to use than the usual packaging made out

of plastic. It could easily decompose like making it as a fertilizer to a soil, it’s very

helpful and convenient if you want to save money on buying fertilizer. We could simply

help our environment by making and patronizing this product. If we would normalize

using it as our permanent food packaging, it could be the first step to our goal which is to

lessen the waste of our country.

Statement of the Problem Study

1. Does cutting too much cogon grass “Imperata Cylindrica” in making food

packaging would affect the environment on producing clean air and erosion

control?

2. If we practice using cogon grass packaging instead of non-biodegradable

packaging, does plastic industry may lose?

3. Does the length and age of cogon grass affect its effectivity as an alternative on

making food packaging?

4. Does cogon grass is more convenient and has an ability to endure the following

type of foods and drinks:

a.) Fried

b.) Sauce
c.) Soup

d.) Drinks

e.) Steamed

f.) Huge and heavy foods like pork lechon

Null Hypothesis

1. Using and practicing cogon grass food packaging doesn’t affect other

industries (plastic and paper industry).

2. There is no significant relationship between the length of cogon grass and its

effectivity as a food packaging.
