Multiple-choice Questions
Answer the multiple choice questions by circling the correct answer. Each question is worth 1
mark.

1. _______________ implies direct communication between CPU and user.

A. Batch processing
B. Distributed processing
C. Centralised processing
D. Online processing

Subjective Questions
Write with complete sentences.

1. Differentiate data and information by explaining the relationship of data. Provide ONE
example to support your explanation.
Data is a collection of unorganized facts whereas information is a data that is
organised. Information is created by defining and organizing relationship among
data. Defining different relationships results in different information. For an
example, student ID, student name, course, date of joined, subject name and
college name are data that can be organised to create different types of
documents such as student card, hostel card, attendance list and transcript.

2. State TWO advantages and TWO disadvantages in having distributed data processing.

 Less expensive to access regional database than a central database in

another country
 Local database can be set up to address local needs
 The central database can be partitioned to reflect the local needs, like
customers, stock, etc.
 Several databases are less vulnerable to disasters
 Each site can provide back-up facilities to the other sites

Disadvantages:
 Data integrity and consistency becomes harder to maintain
 It is difficult to correct mistakes made on the data since there may be
several copies
 Mechanisms needed to ensure that the data are maintained correctly
 Powerful and reliable communications systems are needed
 There can be questions of security of sensitive data

3. Define and provide an example for each of the following:

a) Batch processing

A technique in which a number of similar items or transactions to be

processed are grouped (batched) for processing as a single unit at
predetermined times.

For an example, staff payroll is processed according to fixed timelines on a

periodic basis (monthly) in batches so that all the staff receive their pay at
standard times.

b) Online processing
Online processing is a technique where the input data enters the system
from the point of origin and output is transmitted directly back to the user.
This system implies direct communication between the CPU and the user
for both input and output.

For an example, online processing is used by banks to inform bank

customers of the status of their account in response to an inquiry by
accessing the relevant file using an online terminal.

c) Real time processing

Real time processing is a subset of interactive or online processing. Input
is continuously, automatically acquired from sensors for example, which is
processed immediately in order to respond to the input in as little time as
possible.

For an example, room air conditioner which adaptively controls the

temperature of a room according to the current temperature level.

d) Centralised processing
Centralised processing system is processing performed in one computer
or in a cluster of coupled computers in a single location.

For an example, in immigration department the data is kept in central

computer to maintain the data integrity. Opening new passport or renewal
of passport is done at the terminals connected to the main computer.
Another example, school library system.

e) Distributed processing
Distributed transaction processing is a system in which one or more
components run on separate computers and communicate across a network. It
supports the data processing needs of one organisation, interacting with each
other and a vast database through a larger computer that oversees the entire
network.

Example: car manufacturing system that requires several department’s data

input like data on engine, window, interior, wheels and so on to design and
manufacture a car.

4. Give TWO examples of real time processing system that implemented in shopping mall.
a) Entrance door at the mall that senses an object to open the door.
b) Escalator that senses human to either go up or down.

5. Briefly explain any THREE benefits of using online processing system in Tesco
Supermarket.
(Any three of the following benefits may be explained briefly)

i. Information is centralised: all the data and information stored in one main
storage.
ii. Dissemination of information is easy: Distributing the output become
easier since the all the information retrieves from same storage.
iii. Reduction in paper works: Converting manual system by using paper into
computerizes system.
iv. Improved accuracy: All the information and data will be updated
automatically.
v. Input errors are reduced: Reducing errors since the system’s user just
need to use the computer to perform the task.
vi. Information is more reliable: Reduce to almost no duplication of data since
the all the data and information stored in one storage.

*You have to write your answer in full sentences since the question is ask you to explain.
