 Chapter: 2 Pages: 7 Topic: Language Form, Duration of Interaction

Let Us Discover

Communication is the act or the process of sending and exchanging

information or messages. The use of language in communication comes in different
forms and the following factors create that disparity: (1) intent of the speaker (2)
target audience or person, and the (3) language form most applicable to the
scenario. The intention of the speaker determines the context, while the person
involved in the communication and the kind of event itself where the exchanging of
information happens usually determine the appropriate language form to be used.

Bloom and Lahey (1978) divide language into three components namely:
content, form and use. Form means the structure of something and specifically, it
also means the organization or relationship between things. Thus, language form
refers to the features of language and how these are arranged. Language form can
be divided into two categories (Lahey 1988):

1 GSC-CID-LRMS-ESSLM, v.r. 03.00, Effective June 14, 2021

1. Morphology- this examines how words are formed in any language. It focuses
especially on their structure and how their meaning can be altered through the
addition of prefixes and suffixes.

2. Syntax- refers to the rules that govern how words are combined to create
meaningful utterances.
In spoken language, we are concerned with the ways in which sound is
connected to meaning. This, therefore, introduces a third category.

3. Phonology is the study of the categorization of the speech sounds of a

particular language and the rule system that governs how they are used to
produce meaningful words. It also examines other surface features of speech
such as intonation, stress and pausing.

Language form also refers to the formal and informal language as defined in
the table below:

structured.
Informal language is used without much
consideration to rules of convention or
etiquette. It is casual and mostly not well-
thought-of or prepared because it is used to
communicate with people with whom you have
close association with like parents, siblings and
friends.

Aside from the language form, it is also necessary to estimate the Duration of
Interaction. Duration of Interaction refers to the amount of time a conversation takes
between and among communicators. In events or programs, the duration is
determined by setting the program first, identifying the sole purpose of the gathering,
determining the target audience and speakers for the occasion.
