B. What’s In
DEVELOPME Write the following quadratic equations in standard form, ax2 + bx + c = 0. Then
NT identify the values of a, b, and c. Answer the questions that follow.
1. 2x2 + 9x =10 6. x(5 – 2x) + 15 = 0
2. -2x2 = 2 – 7x 7. (x + 4)(x + 12) = 0
3. 6x – 1 = 2x 2
8. (x – 6)(x – 9) = 0
4. 10 + 7x – 3x2 = 0 9. (3x + 7)(x – 1) = 0
5. 2x(x – 6) = 5 10. 3(x – 5)2 + 10 = 0
Questions:
a. How did you write each quadratic equation in standard form?
b. How do you describe a quadratic equation that is written in standard form?
c. Are there different ways of writing a quadratic equation in standard form? Justify
your answer.
What Is It?
In this lesson, you will see how completing the square will be used to derive
the Quadratic Formula. This method works easily in solving any quadratic equation.
Study the following derivation of the quadratic formula by the method of
completing the square. The steps are just like what has been done in Example 1 so
that you can see that the process is the same. The only difference is that you will be
working with letters instead of numbers.
ax2 +bx + c = 0
b c
x2 + a x + a = 0 Divide both sides by a.
b c c
x +a x =-a

Subtract a from both sides.

which is 4a.

x + 2a = 2a Solve for x.
b √b −4 ac
2
x = - 2a 2a
−b± √b 2−4 ac
or x= 2a
Presto! What had been derived is the Quadratic Formula.
The Quadratic Formula:
−b± √b 2−4 ac
x= 2a
The quadratic formula tells you that if you have a quadratic equation in
standard form ax2 + bx + c =0, then all you need to do is substitute the values of a, b
and c into the formula to get the solutions.

C. What’s More
ENGAGEMEN Solve the equations using the Quadratic Formula and answer the questions that
T follow.
1. x2+ 10x + 9 = 0
2. x2 – 12x + 35 = 0
3. x2 + 5x –14 = 0
4. x2 – 4x + 12 = 0
5. 3x2 – 4x = 0
Questions:
a. How did you use the quadratic formula in finding the solution/s of each equation?
b. How many solutions does each equation have?
c. Is there any equation whose solutions are equal? If there is any, describe the
equation.
d. Is there any equation with zero as one of the solutions? Describe the equation if
there is any.
Additional Activities
A. Solve by quadratic formula. Show your solutions.
