CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Background of the Study

Family plays a crucial role in molding one’s personality, belief and capability.
Everything about a man mostly relies on the state of the family he belonged. The
way he acts towards other people could be accounted to the people whom he often
mingles with. Living under the same roof might as well add to the reasons how
dependent he is to his family. Even so, since every individual has this reliance
towards his family, any adversity would definitely affect his whole- being. Such
devastating matters regarding family relationships like parent’s separation could
give a severe impact to the people concerned, the children (Eshica, 2010).
Nowadays, many are involved in a broken family. It is very usual for people
to think that teenagers doing such nasty acts are rooted to family disorientation.
Even countless studies show that child’s mislead life is blamed to separated
parents. According to Eschica (2010), children with separated parents do not
perform well in school which is a very terrifying incident because a school that is
an institution for learning is failing to deliver education. Thus, it merely becomes
unproductive.
Moreover, it is said that children, being part of a broken family, are suffering
five times than their parents do. Parental separation really causes problems in
emotional, behavioral and academic aspects. Studies also say that those
teenagers are worse off than those with continuously married parents in terms of
academic success, conduct, psychological well-being, and peer relations system.
Thus, it appears like adolescents are the innocent victims of their parents’ inability
to maintain harmonious and stable homes (Amato 2007).
To support the previous statements, Keith also said that the children are at
risk when it comes to single- parenting arrangement. Most adolescents living with
only one parent are economically disadvantaged. Parents cannot afford to buy
consumer goods in order to give their child status among their peers. It results to
juvenile delinquency of teenagers. Aside from this, quality of parenting is one
predictor of behavioral problems among adolescents. They find it difficult to
function as parents in the near future (Keith 2007).
Family consists of the parents and their offspring or a two or more people
who share goals and values in life. It is important and something that should never
be taken for granted, it is the people who you can count on no matter what. In the
modern stage of the family there are two kinds of families: the complete and the
broken family. Broken family can affect the life of their children. It might be the
reason that the children will be misled. It is the one of the family factors why other
children are getting rebellious in school and they cannot focus because of the
problems they encountered at home. Individual’s surrounding the learners with
broken family need to take action in approaching them even asking for their well-
being and concerned about the consequences they have experienced (Bantasan,
Moneva, & Vertulfo 2020).
According to Frazer (2004), psychological home conditions arise mainly
from illegitimacy of children, the label of adopted child, broken homes, divorce and
parental deprivation. Such abnormal conditions of the home, are likely to have a
detrimental effect on school performance of the child he asserts.
Life, in a single parent family or broken home can be stressful for both the
child and the parent. Such families are faced with challenges of inadequate
financial resources (Children Defense Find 2004). Schults (2006) noted that if
adolescents from unstable homes are to be compared with those from stable
homes, it would be seen that the former have more social, academic and emotional
problems. Rochlkepartain (2003) is of the opinion that the family and its structure
play a great role in children’s academic performance. Levin (2001) states that
parents are probably the actor with the clearest un-dimensional interest in a high
level of their children’s academic performance. To some extent, there is simple
evidence to show the marital instability brings about stress, tension, lack of
motivation and frustration obviously, these manifestations act negatively on a
child’s academic performance.
Broken family define as a result of separation of marriage either by death or
annulment. Children live with one of the parents, or many a time there are looked
after by one of the grandparents. In such family, children have bad childhood as
they witness the separation, or lack of parents love together. A broken family is
believed to be a reason of a child’s mislead in life, some people give it as the
main cause of the rebellious and unclear acts of children. According to Desk
(2015), a broken family can negatively affect all domains of your child’s
development. The effects of a broken family on a child’s development depend
on numerous factors, including the age of the child at the time of parents’
separation, and on the personality and family relationships. Although infants and
young children may experience few negative developmental effects, older
children and teenagers may experience some problems in their social, emotional
and educational functioning.
School is another factor that help the child or the student becoming
successful, but how will make them successful if they can’t focus, they can’t do
schooling like others because their minds are occupied their problems encounter
in their family. According to Desk (2015), the effects of broken family to
education slowed academic development is another common way that
separation of the parents affects children. The emotional stress of a divorce
alone can be enough to stunt your child’s academic progress, but the lifestyle
changes and instability of a broken family can contribute to poor educational
outcomes.
However, some children with irrespective home background or structure
works hard and became successful in life. But children with unmarried parents or
separated families often fail and are at risk emotionally (Johnson, 2005). Moreover,
Ayodele (2007) stated that the environment where a child finds himself/herself
goes a long way in determining his learning ability and ultimately his academic
performance in school.

Statement of the Problem

This study generally aims to determine the Effects of Broken Family towards
the Students Performance Task.
Specifically, this study aims to answer the following questions:
1. What are the demographic profile of Broken Family students in terms of;
1.1 Age?
1.2 Gender?
1.3 Family Background?
1.4 Academic Performance?

2. How does being in a broken family affect the senior high school students?
3. Are all students who came from broken family has a low performance task?
4. What are the possible advantages and disadvantage of being in a broken
family?
5. Is there a significant relationship between broken families and the
performance of the students?
Hypothesis of the Study
Ho: Broken family affect the academic performance of Senior High School
Students of Zamboanga Del Sur National High School - Senior High School.
Ha: Broken family couldn’t affect the academic performance of Senior High
School Students of Zamboanga Del Sur National High School - Senior High
School.

Objectives of the Study

The objectives of this study is to know the effects of being part of broken
families to the student’s academic performance in Zamboanga Del Sur National
High School Senior High School
1. To find out the effects of broken families to the academic performance of
Senior High School students in Zamboanga Del Sur National High School.

2. To know the effects of broken families to the behavior of Senior High School
students in Zamboanga Del Sur National High School.

3. To discuss the effects of broken families to the students.

Significance of the Study

This study focuses on how being a member of a broken family affects the
students' emotional, social, and mental health. And also aims to address the
students' concern about having a broken family.
The following can give valuable information for the Senior High School
students, teachers, parents and administrators, about the effects of broken family
towards the Performance task of Senior High School Students:
Senior High School Students. They would be aware that people still tend to their
problems even if they are expected to be more mature in facing them, like their
academic performance is affected by their family.

Teachers. After reading this paper, this will help them be more aware of their
students' life. By knowing that they are from a broken family, the teacher can be
more sensitive with certain related topics, such topics regarding families, divorce,
separation, death and the likes.

Parents. They would be aware that their children get affected too. Since it is an
obligation of parents to tune into their children's problems, they must help them in
their studies or so, by properly making them understand the reason for such and
by giving the children proper care and love, to make him/her secure.

School. The research will be able to point out whether the institution needs more
counselors since individual counseling must be done for those having a hard time
transitioning from having a broken family to having a more stable life or even
though students who are not used to their present lives.
Future Researchers. This research can serve as a core study for future
researches. They can possibly get ideas from this research with proper citations.

Scope and Delimitations

The coverage of this study is all about The Effects of Broken Family towards
the Performance Task of Senior High School Students at Zamboanga Del Sur
National High School (SHS). It consists of positive and negative effects of their
academic performances. The researcher limited this research to the minimum
respondents count of 30 male or female senior high school students of Humanities
and Social Science (HUMSS) strand. The consequence of the study was very
genuine only for the selected Senior High School Students, while the
generalizations and analysis were empirically based on the findings of the study.

Conceptual Framework
Based on the readings, the researchers conceptualize that the broken
family may affect the student's academic performance. It is critical that parents
fulfill their parental responsibilities towards their children.

Theoretical Framework

Definition of Terms
The following terms are briefly described for clarity and a better
comprehension of the study:

Performance Task - refers to any learning activity or assessment that asks

students to perform to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and
proficiency.
Academic Performance - refers to a student's success in meeting short- or
long-term goals in education. In the big picture, academic achievement means
completing high school or earning a college degree. In a given semester, high
academic achievement may mean a student is on the honor roll.
