Square Roots and Cube Roots Revisited

52 = 5 x 5 = 25

(- 5)2 = (-5) x (-5) = 25

Therefore 25 has two square roots:

- positive square root of 25 = 25 = 5
- negative square root of 25 = - 25 = - 5

Square roots of 25 = ± 25 = ±5
Worked Example 3

Find the square roots of 49.

Solution:

Square roots of 49 = ± 49 = ±7
Practise Now 3a

(a) Find the square roots of 64.

(b) Find the negative square root of 9.

(c) Evaluate 36.

Note

52 = 5 x 5 = 25

(- 5)2 = (-5) x (-5) = 25

The square of any number is always positive.

Therefore, the square root of a negative number is not possible.

For example: Evaluate ± −16.

Cube Root

53 = 5 x 5 x 5 = 125

(- 5)3 = (-5) x (-5) x (-5) = - 125

Therefore, cube root will only give one answer.

It is possible to obtain the cube root of a negative number.
!
125 = 5
!
−125 = - 5
Practise Now 3b

Evaluate each of the following.

(a) (- 3)3 (b) (- 4)3

! !
(c) 216 (d) −8

Numbers
Combined Operations on Numbers
So far, we have learned many operations:
!
+, -, ÷, x, ()2, ()3, ,

If we put them all together like

7 + (6 x 52 + 3)

Which part will you calculate first?

Calculate them in the wrong order will get you the wrong answer!

So do it this way:
Order of Operations
Order of Operations

Example: How do you work out 12 ÷ 6 x 2 ?

Multiplication and Division rank equally, but you need to go from left to right:

First 12 ÷ 6 = 2, then 2 x 2 = 4
Worked Example 4

(a) 6 – 7 + 2 x (4 – 32)

Solution:

6 – 7 + 2 x (4 – 32)
= 6 – 7 + 2 x (4 – 9) (Bracket, order)
= 6 – 7 + 2 x (– 5) (multiplication)
= 6 – 7 + (– 10) (left to right, subtraction)
= – 1 + (– 10) (addition)
= – 11
Worked Example 4

(b) (-2)3 – 12 ÷ [2 – ( 25 + 3)]

Solution:

(-2)3 – 12 ÷ [2 – ( 25 + 3)]
= -8 – 12 ÷ [2 – (5+ 3)] (bracket, order)
= -8 – 12 ÷ [2 – 8] (bracket)
= -8 – 12 ÷ [– 6] (division)
= -8 – (-2)
= -8 +2 (addition)
= -6
Practise Now 4a

Without using a calculator, find the value of each of the following.

!
(a) – 3 x (15 – 7 +2) (b) 43 – 7 x [16 – ( 64 – 5 )]
Practise Now 4b

Using a calculator, find the value of each of the following.

!
(a) – 3 x (15 – 7 +2) (b) 43 – 7 x [16 – ( 64 – 5 )]

Note the use of the negative button in your calculator.
