General Directions:
 You are expected to write a brief explanation of not more than a pager length for each
question. So could complete it not less than 7 pages only.
 Your answers must be precise and hand writing neat. Any sort of copying will automatically
disqualifies your result.
 Be in groups of 5 students and make sure that all members are engaged in the activities. Failure
to submit on time reduces your score of this assignment with 1% per each day.
1. Explain how geographical setting of Ethiopia and the Horn shaped human history of the
region (2%).

2. Discuss the Process of Human Evolution; evaluate pieces of evidences that reveal Ethiopia
and the Horn as the Cradle of mankind. Discuss the salient features of the three species of
Homo family (3%).

3. From ancient times to the end of the thirteenth century, societies in Ethiopia and the Horn
underwent political, economic, social and cultural changes. Explain socio-economic and
cultural achievements of the period (4%).

4. Discuss the major source of rivalry between the Christian kingdom and Muslim Sultanates
during the Medieval and post medieval period? (2%)

5. The Oromo population movement of the sixteenth century cannot be better understood
without considering the Gadaa system. Refer sources and write a brief explanation about
the values of the Gadaa system and how contributed to social integration (4%).

6. The period from 1800 to 1941 witnessed efforts to adopt modern ideas and European
technologies by Ethiopian monarchs. Assess what were the enduring elements of
modernization that sought by rulers of the period (4%).

7. In Ethiopia, the Revolution of 1974 was preceded by decades of oppositions to the imperial
rule, both underground and obvious. Assess the reactions of peasants, and Nations and
Nationalities and the students (6%).
