Nur1006 Prework
I am excited to get to know each of you and to teach NUR 1006 this semester!! NUR 1006 is exciting
because it is your first medical surgical nursing class, the real “meat and potatoes” of nursing!
This letter contains a lot of information!! I recommend that you save it and print it and keep it in your
notebook.
Our textbook will be Medical Surgical Nursing, 2nd Edition by Hoffman and Sullivan from Davis, ISBN 978-
0-8036-7707-4. You will also purchase Developing Clinical Judgment for Professional Nursing and the
Next-Generation NCLEX-RN Examination book by Donna Ignatavicius, ISBN 978-0-323-71858-5.
You will come to know and love the textbook well over the next three semesters! You will also use it
when you are studying for NCLEX. It is a very good text, and has some awesome online resources to help
you review content before and after lecture. Your purchase of the textbook gives you access to the Davis
Plus Student Resources, Davis Advantage activities and assignments, Davis Edge adaptive quizzing, and
the eBook.
You will need to have the book before the first day of class. I would recommend that you get a new book
because you will use it for three semesters and when studying for NCLEX. If you do get a used one, you
need to also purchase an access code. You will also need to sign up for Advantage and Edge before the
first day of class.
You will need to create an account for Davis if you don’t have one already. Here is the link for the
instructions on how to set up your Advantage account which includes Edge and sign into our class:
https://davisadvantage.com/.
Click on Help in the upper right corner on the Davis home page. Click on Davis Advantage Student link.
Start with Join Instructor’s Class, then go through the rest of the links. Then click on the Davis Edge
Student link and start with Join Instructor’s Class, then go through the rest of the links. If you have
problems getting into Davis Advantage, contact Davis tech support, they are very helpful.
The code that you need to enter for our class is under the silver scratch off bar inside the front cover
of your book. You will enter the code first then the class ID. The class ID for our class, Med-Surg 2023 –
2024, is: 5 8 0 8 1 1 0 1 5 9 0 7 A W B 5 V
As you will see, you can also access your eBook from Advantage. If you like to use the eBook, it would be
good to download the entire book from Davis Plus so that you don’t have to go into Advantage to see it.
I would strongly encourage you to actually purchase the hardback book too and not just use the eBook. I
will expect you to bring the book to class every day and to make lots of notes in it. You will want to make
notes on the PowerPoint handouts, but you won’t want to get these out in NUR 2006 and 2016! The
notes you make in the book will be right there for your reference. Don’t worry about trying to save the
book to resell, it is one book that you will to keep as a reference! And besides, it will be pretty worn out
by the end of next year!
Assignment:
Please do the first Advantage Personalized Learning assignment, Fluid Imbalances by Wednesday,
January 18. This includes a pre-assessment to do first, a 3-minute video to watch, an activity and a post-
assessment. It will take you about 15 minutes. The transcripts for the videos are printed underneath.
You may want to print these to read later, but it isn’t necessary.
I am not concerned about how well you do on the pre- or post-assessment, I just want you to do them
to get familiar with the content, and Advantage. You will get 4 points if you do all four sections,
regardless of how well you do. Do not do the Edge quiz now, wait until you have learned the material!
They are designed to help you see what you learned and what you still need to review. Every year some
ambitious students try to do the Edge quizzes early and don't do well on them because they haven't
learned the material yet.
You will have a Personalized Learning (PL) assignment each week. The activities will be assigned for you
to do before we discuss the content in class. You will need to do all four parts even if you get a green
“thumbs up” on the pre-assessment. Don’t worry if you get a red “thumbs down” on the pre-
assessment. That just means you have information to learn about the topic. You will have three
attempts on the post-assessment. Try your best to get 80% or above by reviewing material you didn’t
know well. You will do the Edge quiz after we complete the content in class. Not all of the Personalized
Learning topics or Edge quizzes will be required, some will be optional, and some are for NUR 2006 and
NUR 2016. Those that are required and due dates will be clearly indicated on the class schedule.
You will have some quizzes assigned each week. They may be from Edge, or from Kaplan. I will give you
more information about this in class. You may also make practice quizzes. Research into pass rates for
NCLEX clearly indicate that the more quizzing and remediation you do while in nursing school, the better
your chances for passing NCLEX the first time.
As you know, the NCLEX that you will be taking will emphasize clinical judgment, and we will really stress
it in class. Davis has Clinical Judgment Activities. We will do the first one together in class, so please
don’t get ahead of us and do it before then. We will also be using the Developing Clinical Judgment
book.
This is a very intense class and will require a lot of your time outside of class to be able to really learn
the material well! You will also be expected to do quite a bit of prep work before class, so it will be
important that you are organized and don’t fall behind! Using a planner will be essential. Some lectures
will be pre-recorded so that we have time to go in depth on nursing care in class. There will also be short
quizzes in class on information that you should already know from your anatomy and physiology classes,
or from the recorded lectures.
We will hit the ground running the first day! The main things to do before the first day of class are: get
the textbook, sign into Davis Advantage, do the Personalized Learning Fluid Imbalances assignment, and
skim through Chapter 10. Also review the IV section in your Fundamentals text book. Ashley gave you
the links for the Davis skill videos for IV tubing and Central lines if you want to watch them, but it’s not
required.
I realize this may all seem overwhelming! We will go over all of this again in class, so don’t panic!
