MODULE 1
AN OVERVIEW
ENGAGE
This is the first phase of your module you engage yourself with activity about science
framework in the K to 12. So, I want you to focus so that you can answer the given questions
below.
My goal in teaching science is to give students the knowledge and direction they ought to discover and
understanding scientific ideas.
2. What first come to your mind when you are to teach Science?
When I am about to teach science, the first thing that comes to me is all about experiments, learning, and how
things function.
The National Science Foundation's mission is to ensure that by the end of 12th grade, all students have some
appreciation of the beauty and wonder of science. Students must possess sufficient knowledge of science and
engineering to engage in public discussions on related issues. They must be careful consumers of scientific
and technological information related to their everyday lives.
EVALUATE
How well do you understand this Module? Express yourself by answering the following questions:
1. As a future science teacher write way in which you can motivate students to involve themselves in
scientific discoveries?
DR. JEAN RACHEL A. BARROGA
As a future educator, I hope to inspire my students to participate in scientific research by serving as a
good role model, strengthening the people's opinion of science, integrating science to everyday life, and
providing them with possibilities to explore.
ELABORATE
After having seen the coverage of the two science components, what have you observed in the
content outline for each topic: Matter and Living Things and The Environment? Let us understand the
framework by answering the following question that refer to the two areas of discipline and how they
move along in progression from lower to higher grade level.
Let us make a comparison of the similarities of the two. Agree or disagree to the observations and
explain or elaborate further.
Statements about (1) Matter and (2) Living Things Agree Disagree Explanation
in their Environment
1. In both topics, the concepts in grade 3 are simpler Agree Grade three's concept
than grade 4. is simpler to learn than
grade four's concept.
Fourth-graders
continues to know
topics they learned in
third grade.
2. There is a consistent title of the major topic from Agree To illustrate the
Grade 3 to Grade 6. consistency of
the lectures.
3. The area on Living Things and Their Environment Agree They are the major
focused on three kinds of living things: Humans, topic in Biology.
In summary, what do you understand of a spiral progression curriculum in science for the elementary
grades?
According to what I understood, the spiral curriculum is a model designed to aid science teachers can
create lessons, activities, or projects that emphasize the growth of thinking skills.
EVALUATE
Test your Understanding about the Science Framework from Grades 3 to Grade 6 specific to
Chemistry (Matter) and Biology (Living Things and their Environment)
C. 1.Science in the elementary level A. Chemistry and Biology in the K to 12 curriculum include a.
Chemistry and Biology
b. Chemistry, Biology and Physics
c. Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Earth Science
d. None of the A, B. C, D.
In order to teach science effectively in the elementary level, a teacher should one of the
following:
c. Must have a comprehensive knowledge of only one discipline of science in the curriculum.
d. Must have a comprehensive knowledge of at least two discipline of science in the curriculum.
e. Must have a comprehensive knowledge of the four disciplines of science in the curriculum.
f. Must have a comprehensive knowledge of all branches of science.
A. 3. Spiral progression in science means that grade three pupils learn simpler contents than grade four.
g. This statement is true c. This statement is partly true.
h. This statement is false d. This statement is doubtful.
A. 4,Which statement is TRUE about teaching science in the elementary grade level for K to 12?
i. All elementary grades teachers should be equipped with contents and process of science
j. Only those who will teach science should learn the different branches of science in college.
k. Learning what to teach and not how to teach science is a universal principle. d. None of the
above
EVALUATE
Let us check what you have learned from this lesson. Answer each item with either YES or
NO. Mark X on the space provided that corresponds to your chosen answer. If you answer is YES,
explain, why yes. If No, justify your answer. Write in the space provided after the table.
1. In teaching science, is it appropriate to make learners master and practice the basic science
processes first? Yes X No_______ Why? Monitoring traits, estimating amounts, trying to sort,
implying, speculating, investigating, and explaining are all steps in the basic science processes that
students must understand and perform before engaging in critical thinking.
2. Does teaching the basic science processes require sophisticated laboratory equipment?
Yes _______ No X Why? It is not important to hire specialized equipment to teach the essential
scientific concepts, so in order for learners to correctly use the knowledge, they needed objects they
can touch and see. They are unable to properly comprehend an investigation without the necessary
materials.
Yes X No_______ Why? All scientific activities require experimentation as this is the only
method by which all the answers. This enables us to draw judgments that are evident.
4. Will teaching science in the elementary grades provide a good foundation for learning science in
the higher grade levels?
Yes X No_______ Why? Early education through primary school is when children start to acquire
an awareness of the natural environment. Early introduction to science education can help learners
develop on their passions, previous experiences, and intended future. The value of science is
strengthened by this.
Yes _______ No X Why? There are actually different students who respond differently to
different methods and even just different adults. There is no way that anyone will be the perfect
teacher for everyone, it is simply impossible.
Yes X No_______ Why? Posing questions is the first step in the active learning method known as
inquiry-based learning. Instead of informing students what they have to know, it emphasizes their
contribution to the learning process. They are encouraged to learn more about the subject, ask
questions, and exchange thoughts.
Yes X No_______ Why? Yes, science education in the elementary school also stimulates curiosity
since from an early age, individuals allow themself to believe in science to verify their skills and
develop a curiosity for the world around them. Moreover, this could put them in situations where
they can analyze their ability for inventing and attempting original things while also favorably
impacting society.
9. Will learning the content and the processes of science make you prepared teachers in the future?
Yes X No_______ Why? Teachers should have the necessary knowledge to serve as a foundation for
students. It can make a significant contribution to have a solid foundation in scientific principles and a
plan for delivering captivating lesson plans. Instructors who are prepared with new and creative
approaches to teaching science can sow the scientific seeds.
