CHAPTER ONE
ABOUT INDUSTRAIL TRAINING FUND (I.T.F)

1.1 [1]About SIWES

SIWES which stands for Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme was initiated by the

Industrial Training Fund (I.T.F) in the year 1973 so as to complement the theoretical knowledge

acquired in higher institutions with practical experience.

There are different forms of Cooperatives Education around the world, all emanating from the

innovation of Herman Schneider in 1906. In Nigeria, the current form of Cooperative Education

is (SIWES). Often commonly called (I.T) which stands for Industrial Training or Internship

Training. The SIWES scheme is a specific form of Cooperative Education or Industrial Training

which is more generic.

The scheme is therefore a skill, training – oriented program for exposing students to the work

they would meet after convocation. The minimum duration of the program is normally 24 weeks

(6 months) except for engineering and technological programs where the minimum duration is

40 weeks. The scheme is jointly coordinated by the Industrial Training Funds (I.T.F), the

National Universities Commission (N.U.C) and National Board for Technical Education

(N.B.T.E).

P a g e 7 | 29
1.2 Scope of SIWES

The goal of SIWES is to promote industrialization in Nigeria, and serve as an avenue between

the world of teaching, learning, industry and work with reference to a field of study such as

engineering, science, agriculture, technology and other professional education programs.

P a g e 8 | 29
1.3 Antecedents SIWES

Following the discontinuation of the system of sponsorship of students by employers at the Yaba

Technical Institute and the emergence of other higher institutions offering Science, Engineering

and Technology (S.E.T) programs, there was no organized industrial training in Nigeria, only

those students who engaged in holiday job in areas relevant to their courses of study could be

said to have had some form of work experience or industrial training while others did not.

The situation led to a spate of criticisms directed at the S.E.T graduates from Nigerian

institutions as lacking practical skills needed by industry. Consequently, some high institution

introduced the Student Work-Experience Program (S.W.E.P) to enrich the curricula of

engineering courses. However, S.W.E.P was not a suitable for real industrial training.

1.3 Advent of SIWES

In recognition of the shortcomings and weakness in the formation of S.E.T graduates,

particularly with respect to acquisition of relevant production skills (R.P.Ss), the Industrial

Training Funds (which was established in 1971 by Decree 47) initiated the Students Industrial

Work Experience Scheme (S.I.W.E.S) in 1973.

The scheme was designed to expose students to the industrial environment and enable them to

develop occupational competencies so that they can readily contribute their quota to national

economic and technological development after graduation

P a g e 9 | 29
Consequently, S.I.W.E.S is a planned and structured program based on stated and specific career

objectives which are geared towards developing the occupational competencies of participants.

1.4 Aim and Objectives of SIWES

The objectives of the students industrial training work experience scheme are:

 Provision of avenue for students in the Nigerian universities to gain industrial skills and

experience in their course of study.

 To prepare students for the work situation they are likely to meet after graduation.

 To expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and machinery that

may not be available in the universities.

 To make the transition from the university to the world of world of work easier, and thus

enhance students contacts for later job placement.

 To provide students with an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real work

situation, thereby bridging the gap between university work and actual practice.

 To enlist and strengthen employers’ involvement in entire educational process of preparing

university graduates for employment.

P a g e 10 | 29
1.5 Benefits of SIWES
The major benefits accruing to students who participate conscientiously in SIWES are the skills

and competencies they acquire. These relevant production skills (RPSs) remain a part of the

recipients of SIWES as life-long assets which cannot be taken away from them. This is because

the knowledge and skills acquired through training are internalized and become relevant when

required to perform jobs or functions.

Other benefits include:

 Opportunity for students to blend theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom with

practical hands-on application of knowledge required to perform work in industry.

 Exposure of students to the environment in which they will eventually work, thereby

enabling them to see how their future professions are organized in practice.

 Minimization of the bewilderment experienced by students, particularly those from a

non-technological background pursuing courses in science, engineering and technology

with regard to different equipment, processes, tools etc. available in industry.

 Enabling SET students appreciate work methods and gain experience in handling

equipment and machinery which may be available in their institutions.

Graphic Designing
[12]

What’s Graphic design? is a craft where professionals create visual content to communicate

messages. By applying visual hierarchy and page layout techniques, designers use typography

and pictures to meet users' specific needs and focus on the logic of displaying elements in

interactive designs, to optimize the user experience. They are various types of graphic designing

Brand Identity and Logo Design:

Graphic designers specializing in brand identity and logos envision, propose, and design fresh,

powerful visual identities for new and existing brands, organizations, products, and services.

Along with fonts and colors, logos are central to brand identity, requiring a unique selection and

arrangement of colors, shapes, and designs that will be used to represent the brand nearly

everywhere—from websites to company buildings to advertisements. When creating or updating

a brand identity, designers may also produce business cards, letterhead, ads, and many other

different types of graphic design outputs featuring the new brand identity.

Packaging Design:

Designers working in package design must have a passion for designing for 3D shapes, including

the inside and outside of packaging. Their job is to create designs that protect the product in

shipping, catch the eye of a consumer in a store, and then, when viewed up close, inform and

P a g e 24 | 29
persuade shoppers. This type of design not only involves initial sketches and computer work, but

also testing your design on physical mockups to check every angle. An understanding of

packaging materials and their environmental impact are other important aspects of this career.

Web and Mobile Design:

Designers may focus on either of these two different types of graphic design areas, as long as

they know the standards and best practices of the medium for which they’re designing. In these

roles, designers design the pages, layout, and graphics for apps or websites, working closely with

developers to ensure the feasibility and proper functionality of their designs. They also help to

plan a sites or apps navigation, structure, and user experience, creating continuity, order, and

simplicity across all pages or screens. Knowing the basics of coding will help in this career.

More specialized roles within web and mobile design include user experience design, user

interface design, and information architecture.

Layout and Print Design:

Designers involved in layout and print design strive to find the perfect balance between text and

graphics, creating designs that are both aesthetically pleasing and easy to read for magazines,

books, newspapers, brochures, posters, and more. For layout and print graphic designers, the

P a g e 25 | 29
placement of imagery and the selection of font and typeface is of particular concern, especially

when working with large amounts of text. Familiarity with printing processes and production is

also essential for success in this career.

CHAPTER FOUR
RECOMMENDATION/CONCLUSION

This section discusses about the challenges I faced as a SIWES intern; as there can be no perfect

system of things without one or two problems. A few recommendations, based on my

experience, were made which I believe will contribute to the improvement of the Students’

Industrial Work Experience Scheme, both for the students and the bodies in authority.

Challenges Faced

The most challenging part of my job was adjusting to a completely new environment. When I

first arrived, I was excited to start doing meaningful work. However, the reality was that I had

never been in an industrial environment before and I knew very little or nothing about the

process. I discovered that I had a lot to learn.

P a g e 26 | 29
Another challenge faced was Learning to how to work under pressure, having to meet up to

one’s KPI (Key Performance Indicators) wasn’t easy but I had to adapt to the working

environment.

Also, IT placement, I was initially placed in another affiliate of the company work with before I

was moved, it was inconvenient having to move for one office to another.

Recommendations

In respect of the few yet very present challenges I experienced in the course of undertaking the

SIWES I would like to make a few recommendations I believe may contribute to the

improvement of the Scheme for all those concerned.

- Provisions should be made for placements for students in months before commencement of the

internship program.

- There should be a contract of making sufficient funds available to SIWES participants to cover

their cost of transportation.

- Employers of labor accepting SIWES students should ensure effective orientation of students

about the system of Organization as they enter into the work environment, because without

sufficient information as to how operations are carried out it may be difficult and confusing for

students.

P a g e 27 | 29
CONCLUSION

In review this internship program has been an excellent and rewarding experience. I have been

able to meet and network with so many people that I am sure will be able to help me with

opportunities in the future. My SIWES experience has indeed served its purpose as the initial

idea of SIWES program was to not only expose the student to the real-life work environment but

to enable us students to educate ourselves about work ethics and ethos, mannerism and how to

conduct ourselves in the work environment.

RECOMMENDATION

From my Experience through my Intern training, I would like to indorse that:

 All departments in an institution should be able to partake in SIWES for students to be
able to experience the everyday job life and more so, acquire skills and ideas based on
their institution programs.
 SIWES should be able to provide locations for easy Intern placement.
