PERSONAL STATEMENT- INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGY

While I will never make the grandiose statement of knowing the nitty-gritty of my life’s plan
at an early age, I can state – with a degree of certainty – that it would undoubtedly involve
books. I pursued a Bachelor of Science degree programme in Psychology at the University of
Cape Coast, Ghana. This programme gave me a considerable amount of knowledge in the area
of Psychology. In Ghana, Psychology is now a growing field and requires experts in the area.
Specifically, in the area of Work, Organizational and Personnel Psychology (WOP-P), there
are very few experts. In one of the Psychology conferences I attended, there were concerns
raised about how knowledge is limited in the area of WOP-P. This motivated me to pursue a
master’s degree in Work, Organizational and Personnel Psychology to broaden my knowledge
and understanding in the area in order to impact this knowledge to others in my country.

I graduated with a second-class upper honour (CGPA of 3.3 out of 4.0). The knowledge I
acquired during my undergraduate studies will inform my engagement in WOP-P as I took
some courses that are relevant to the programme. These courses include; Industrial and
Organizational Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Social Change in Organizations and
Psychometrics. Overall, these courses helped build a strong foundation and background
which will help me to be strongly engaged in the programme and become successful.

Upon completion of my first degree, I had the privilege to work as a Psychiatric assistant at
the Pantang Psychiatric Hospital Accra, Ghana. This opportunity equipped me with
analytical skills, conceptual and interpersonal skills. I sometimes delegated as a
representative of my superior for important meetings where I did presentations to my
superiors briefing them on what transpired at the meetings. This sharpened my
communication skills as well as gave me some assertiveness in public speaking.

Because of my desire to become a practitioner and researcher in this field, this program will
encourage me to conduct research that contributes to existing knowledge in the field and
apply the results of this research in various work settings and since this programme focuses
on the scientist-practitioner approach, I think it is appropriate.

Alongside my grades, I engaged in other extra-curricular activities during my undergraduate

studies. For instance, I served as Vice Chairman of the Students Representative Council
(SRC), where I was part of the team which served as mediators between students and senior
members of the university in discussing student-related issues. As a result of my hard work
and devotion,
I was given a citation as an outstanding executive. My academic scores and these extra-
curricular activities reflect my abilities to excel and succeed in this master’s programme.
Therefore, I have a strong belief that achieving an excellent academic feat during my
undergraduate studies is evidence that I have the potential to repeat such a feat when given the
opportunity to pursue Masters in WOP-P.

To conclude, I strongly believe that the diverse nature of this programme will help me
improve my teamwork skills and add up to my experiences in dealing with diverse teams and
acceptance of different perspectives. I am convinced that a Master’s in WOP-P would
support my dream of becoming an influential Professor in the area and working around the
world to contribute my quota to the betterment of employee and organizational relations. I
would also be a great contributor to the research fraternity and share the knowledge I will
gain during the course of this programme.

I am looking forward to hearing from the selection team soon.
