I. Kinds of Triangles and their Parts

BASIC PARTS OF TRIANGLE
Sample Questions:
Two lines intersect perpendicularly producing one angle that measures (12x – 36) ˚. What is the value of x?
SOLUTION:
Two lines intersect perpendicularly = right angle or 90 ˚
90 ˚= (12x – 36) ˚
90 ˚= 12 (10.5) - 36 ˚
90 ˚ = 90 ˚
x= 10.5

Orthocenter - point of concurrency of the three

altitudes of triangle
SOLUTION:
It is an isosceles triangle so two sides are equal (sides AC and BC)
AB= 32
AC= 38
BC= 38 = 6x-28
38 = 6 (11) – 28
38 = 38
x= 11 xD
II. Sum of the Measures of the Interior Angles of a Polygon

 The sum of interior angles of a triangle is equal to 180°

S= (n-2) x 180
Polygon Name Number of Interior Angles Sum of Interior Angles = (n-2) x
180°
Triangle 3 180°
Quadrilateral 4 360°
Pentagon 5 540°
Hexagon 6 720°
Heptagon 7 900°
Octagon 8 1080°
Nonagon 9 1260°
Decagon 10 1440°

1. What is the measure of the third angle of a triangle if the measures of the two angles are?
a. 46º, 82º
b. 51 ½º, 67 ½º
Solutions: Let x be the measure of the third angle
a. x + (46º + 82º) = 180 º
x + 128º = 180º
x = 180º - 128º
x = 52º, measure of the third angle

b. x + (51 ½ º + 67 ½ º) = 180º
x + 119º = 180º
x = 180º - 119º
x =61º, measure of the third angle
 The sum of the measures of the exterior angles of a triangle one on each vertex is equal to 360 º
Find the number of sides in each regular polygon with exterior angle.
Formula: 360/n
1. 360/90= 4 sides
2. 360/45= 8 sides
3. 360/36= 10 sides
Find how many sides does a regular polygon if each angle measures:
Formula: (180-n) if you get the answer divide n from 360.
1. 180-120= 60 360/60= 6 sides
2. 180-90= 90 360/90= 4 sides
3. 180-135= 45 360/45= 8 sides
Find the sum of the measures of the exterior angles one of each vertex, of each of the following convex
polygon.
If a polygon is convex, then the sum of the measures of the exterior angles, one at each vertex, is 360°.
Find the measure of each angle of any polygons.
Formula: (n-2)180 divided by number of sides of polygon.
1. (5-2)180= 540/5= 108
2. (4-2)180= 360/4= 90
SAMPLE QUESTIONS:
1. The measure of an exterior angle of a triangle is (20x-54) ˚ while the remote interior angles of the same
triangle measures [10(x-1)]˚ and (4x+16)˚. What is the value of x?
SOLUTION: CHECK:
20x – 54= 10 (x-1) + 4x+16 20x – 54= 10 (x-1) + 4x+16
20x – 54= 14x + 6 20 (10) – 54= 10 (10-1) + 4(10) +16
20x – 54 = 14x + 6 + 54 146 = 146
20x – 54 = 14x + 60
20x -14x=14x + 60 - 14x
6x = 60
6x/6 = 60/6
x = 10

the dimensions?
SOLUTION:
L= 3w-4 L= 3w – 4
P= 272 l= 3(35) – 4
P= 2L + 2W l= 101
272= 2 (3w – 4) + 2w
272= 6w – 8
