Surveying Problems Statments

This document contains 18 survey problems related to measuring lengths using chains that may be too long or too short. The problems involve calculating true lengths based on errors in measurement chains. They also contain problems converting between different angle measurement systems like degrees-minutes-seconds, quadrants, and bearings.

chain. If the chain is 15cm too short, find the true length.

2 The length of line by 20m chain was found to be 600m. find the true
length of line, if the chain used is 0.5 link too long

3 The length of line measured with an engineer’s chain was found to be

800ft. It was afterwards found to be chain was 3 inches too long, find
the true length of line.

4 The length of line measured with the Gunter’s chain is 5000 links. If the
chain is 0.20 links too short. Find the true length of line.

5 A line 500m long when measured with 20m chain was found to be
503m. Find the error in chain.
6 The length of line measured with Gunter’s chain was recommended as
3200 links. The same line when measured with Engineer’s chain was
1
found to be 2103ft. If the Gunter’s chain was links too long. What
4
was the error in 100ft chain?
7 The distance measured between two points by 20m chain was 1340m
and when measured with 30m chain was 1345m. if 30m chain was 1link
too short, what correction was required in 20m chain.
8 The length of the line measured with 20m chain was found to be 800m,
the same line when measured with 30m chain was found to be 808m.
The 20m chain was 8cm too short, what was the error in 30m chain.
9 A 20m chain was corrected before the comment was found to be 10cm
too long at the end of the day of work after measuring the distance of
500m. Find the correct length of line.
10 An area surveyed by20m chain was plotted straight 1cm=40cm and
found to be 125cm2. Later it was found that chain was 10cm too long,
find the area of the length surveyed in hacters.

11 A line measured with a steel tape which was exactly 30m long at 18℃
and found to be 452.34m. The temperature during measurement is 32
℃ . Find the true length of line when co-efficient of expansion of the
tape per degree centigrade is 0.000017.
12 A 50cm tape is suspended between the ends under the pull of 150N.
The mass of the tape is 1.52kg, find the correct length of length of tape.
13 A distance between two points along a slopping ground is 500m. Find
the horizontal distance if the slopping angle is 8° 10' .
14 What will be horizontal distance of a sloppy ground which is 860m long?
If the angle of slope is 1in 8.
15 The length of line measured a on the slope 12° was recorded to be 1680
links. It was subsequently found that the chain 0.5 links too short. Find
the true horizontal distance? Assume the length of chain is 100ft.
16 The following distance was measured by means of 100ft steel tape 310ft
on 4° 30' slope, 218.6ft on a 6° 40' slope and 244.4ft on a slope 9° slope.
What will be total horizontal distance?
17 A distance between two stations A and B measured along a slope was
2000m. Determine the horizontal distance between A and B, when
i. The angle of slope is 10°
ii. The slope is 1 in 8.
iii. Difference of level between A and B is 70m.

PROBLEMS CONTAINED IN TEST:

18 A 20m chain corrected before the commencement was found to be

10cm too long at the end of the days work after measuring a distance of
5000m.Find the correct length of line.
19 A 20m chain was 6cm too long after measuring the distance of 1800m. it
was 6cm too long at the end of eight days work after chaining distance
of 4800m. If the chain was corrected at the starting of work. Find the
true distance.
20 An engineer’s chain was found to be 3” too long after chaining a
distance of 4000ft.it was found to be 6” too long at the end of days
work after chaining a distance 7000ft. If the chain was corrected before
the commencement of work, then find the true distance.
