Case 1
In a very traditional and patriarchal family, the father of a 19-year old girl tells her that he
has arranged for her to marry a certain man. The girl does not know the man very well.
The man is much older than she is, but she agrees to the marriage.

1. Do you think this kind of situation could happen? Why?

Yes, this situation could happen because there are some families who still follows the
tradition passed on to their preceding generation where the head of the family set an
arranged marriage for their children.

2. Did she give her informed consent to this marriage? Elaborate.

Yes, she gave her informed consent to the marriage knowing their family tradition and
patriarchy. She agreed to the marriage set and arranged for her by her father even
though she doesn't know very well the man she's going to marry.

3. Was there any force used in this incident? Who is more powerful in this
example-father or daughter?

Based on the situation, there was no force happened or even mentioned because it was
said that their family are more traditional and patriarchal. Since the family they belonged
to is patriarchal, the father is more powerful as the provider and as the head of the
family, and he’s also the one that tackles any necessary decision that needs to be
taken.

4. What kind of power does the father have?

Knowing that they belonged in a very traditional and patriarchal family, the father in this
situation is more powerful in this situation because as a head of the family and being a
male, he dominates the family including women, junior men, and the children under his
authority.

5. What kind of power does the daughter have?

Women’s subordination is the power that the daughter has. Her role as a daughter in
their traditional and patriarch family is inferior to her father’s role. She has less power
and authority in their family so she shall follow what has been set by her father.

6. How does power relate to choice in this example?

It's all about controlling your life. If one has lesser or no power over something, they
most likely have no choice but to follow whoever is more powerful than they are. In this
situation, the daughter from a traditional and patriarchal family has no choice but to
accept what her father set for her which is an arranged marriage with a man chosen by
her father even though she doesn't know very well or he doesn’t even love the man
she's going to marry.
