The tourism industry is a major component of the economy which generated economic growth,

create employment opportunities and increased revenues from taxes. In fact, the Philippine

Development Plan (PDP) discusses tourism as a key economic driver for growth and as a growth

pillar for reducing poverty. Due to its significant social and economic benefits, the Medium-

Term Philippine Development Plan (MTPDP) highlights tourism as a major priority industry. It

is asserted that the tourism sector has undoubtedly assisted many poor rural communities in

improving their quality of life. As a result, tourism is a powerful source of growth, providing

chances for employment and income augmentation, especially for Filipinos who live in coastal

and rural areas where the tourist destination is located.

Zamboanga Peninsula (ZamPen) must be more aggressive in enhancing the connectivity of its

growth areas to other key destinations in Mindanao, the Philippines, and the rest of the world in

order to achieve development and sustainability in the region. Improvements on mobility shall be

undertaken to make tourism more accessible to visitors, producers, consumers, and investors.

The total revenue earned from investments in ZamPen in 2019 was PHP1.37 billion. These

investments came about as a result of active investment facilitation, which also involved tourism.

The region's overall strong economic performance was boosted by the implementation of tourism

initiatives, projects, and activities for the year 2019 as well as the region's tourism industry's

progressive development. The expansion of businesses associated to tourism attests to the

support of inclusive growth through employment generation.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) IX strengthened its promotional efforts and measures to

attract more visitors and to promote tourism potentials in the area, considering the scenic views

and stunning beaches which were comparable to other prominent beaches in the country. These

included intensive marketing programs such as hosting of international events to generate

favorable news stories highlighting the established and developing tourist attractions, supporting

notable festivals, promotion of new tourism products, and many others.

In the upcoming years, a significant segment of tourism funding will be devoted to

diversification and raising the quality of tourism products through the development of tourism

circuits. The direction's holistic approach will be supported by all other programs and

interagency initiatives, which will be designed to guarantee the following: (1) a tourist-friendly

region; (2) concreted roads leading to the circuits' tourism sites; (3) improved airport and seaport

facilities and structures that enabled for better aviation and maritime operations; and (4) tourism

products developed for and included in the circuits that adhere to sustainable development

principles. (5) Tourism-related activities satisfy customers and produce a tourism experience that

fulfills the Philippines' and the region's marketing slogan, "More Fun in the Philippines."

Ensuring a high level of competence and a strong commitment among stakeholders on major

aspects like quality assurance and sustainable practices is necessary to ensure the sustainability

of tourist development. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) emphasized to

keep the tourism industry (and its various initiatives) sustainable, it should correspond to the

need of integrating economic, social, and environmental development planning in all facets of

tourism operations. This puts heavy challenge for the government to make the tourism industry

sustainable both as a revenue and employment generation milieu. The government plays a very
crucial role in terms of crafting tourism policies, sustainable development and tourism

management over the long term.

Research Methodology

This study employed descriptive quantitative method of inquiry and secondary data collection

from various sourced agencies mainly from the Department of Tourism Regional Office 9, the

National Economic and Development Authority, the National Statistical Coordination Board of

the Philippine Statistics Agency (PSA), and other databases of tourism statistics. Sources of

pertinent literature included peer-reviewed journal publications. Secondary data on tourist

arrivals and important tourism indicators were reviewed and studied as basis in the study of

Zamboanga Peninsula tourism competitiveness during the pre-pandemic period. Key figures on

commerce and tourism as well as descriptive quantitative and economic studies on tourism from

academic institutions and government organizations were also taken into consideration.

Conclusion

Based on the foregoing discussions, the tourism sector continues to contribute to the Zamboanga

Peninsula's growth and development. Despite the growing level of competition within the

dynamics of the complex tourism environment, the tourism industry in Zamboanga Peninsula is

positioned to be extremely competitive not just in the Mindanao region but also throughout the

nation. Over the past years, there has been a positive and steadily increasing number of

inbound tourists. The industry's expansion and progress are mostly supported by tourist

initiatives spearheaded by the private sector. When equity, economic viability, and ecological

sustainability are taken into consideration in all aspects of tourism activities, sustainable tourism
development is possible. Growing Zamboanga Peninsula's tourism industry in a sustainable way

can have a significant positive economic impact on generating jobs and poverty reduction.

In terms of sustainability, the local communities, the private sector, the NGAs and LGUs, and

the tourism industry in Zamboanga Peninsula may all work together to advance the industry's

development through effective policy and program implementation, proactive participation, and

collaborative efforts. To achieve a sustainable tourism business in Zamboanga Peninsula, a

holistic and continuous development effort should bring together aspects from the economic,

political, social, legal, and environmental sectors. The region must consistently provide the high-

quality products and services in the tourism sector if it is to compete successfully with the arrival

of numerous prominent tourist sites in nearby islands and regions. The programs and initiatives

for the profitable and sustainable growth of the tourism sector must be safeguarded by the

practical implementation of tourism guidelines and policies in accordance with the area of

location and needs.
