Assignment Brief and Guidance:

Talent Management

Workplace transformation is the rethinking of flexible workspaces to accommodate different kinds of work,
workers, and technology. Driven by new technologies and increasing globalisation the workplace has been
evolving rapidly to support these constant changes. The changes in technology, roles and competencies has
provided countless opportunities for enhancement and change within organisations and as the world or
work changes so does the workplace.

Deloitte in their report entitled ' Workplace transformation in the digital age' identified four dimensions of
the workplace ecosystem that needed to be considered in any workplace transformation strategy:

 space, relating to the design of office buildings and space;

 place, relating to how the workforce is spread across different locations;
 technology and the requirements needed for employees to carry out their roles and collaborate;
 talent relating to organisational structure and culture.

In the wake of the recent global pandemic all these dimensions of the workplace ecosystem are having to be
reimagined. Many organisations already have had to refocus their workforce plan to ensure a fully remote
workforce has the capabilities and technologies available to continue employee connectivity, engagement
and productivity. Navigating this new way of work is crucial to support business operations and far reaching
implications for the future.

Learner requires to select a suitable area from the areas given below to conduct the research and further needs
to develop appropriate topic, Research Questions and Research Objectives.

 The impact of the global pandemic on accelerating workplace transformation

 Why linking organizational and employee efficiency transformation is critical for to remain
competitive
 Employee collaboration tools: How they are being deployed and how they are impacting productivity
in sometimes surprising ways
 The Gig Economy: It’s real and redefining the nature of employment and employees
 How remote workers are surpassing their peers in the office in both job-satisfaction and productivity
and how workplaces are using these insights to transform operations
 The challenges faced by organizations when embarking on workplace transformation initiatives and
how the right strategy, funding, and support of management can result in an increase in product and
services innovation as well as a long-term competitive edge
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
.

The Learner requires to produce a research proposal that clearly defines a research question or hypothesis,
supported by a literature review (Use the project proposal and ethical consideration format)

Project Proposal should cover following areas;

1. Define your research problem or question. (This can be stated as a research question,
objectives or hypothesis)
2. Provide a literature review giving the background and conceptualisation of your proposed area
of study. (This would provide existing knowledge and benchmarks by which your data can be
judged)
3. Consider and define your research methodology and research process. Demonstrate
understanding of the pitfalls and limitations of the methods chosen and ethical issues
that might arise.
4. Draw points (1–3, above) into a research proposal for agreement together with your tutor.
5. Evaluate different research approaches and methodology, and make justifications for the choice of
methods selected based on philosophical/ theoretical frameworks.
6. Critically evaluate research methodologies and processes in application to a business research project to
justify chosen research methods and analysis

01: INTRODUCTION TO THE RESEARCH

1.1 background of the research

Collaboration is commonly defined as working with another individual or group in order to

achieve something. With that, we can define a collaboration tool: a technology tool that can be
used to help people work together to achieve a common goal or objective.

A collaboration tool can be something as simple as a whiteboard in a conference room that

people gather around and use to brainstorm and solve problems. Another collaboration tool is a
conference call, during which multiple people get together over the phone to hash out an issue.
But for the purposes of this lesson, we are going to discuss online tools that allow people to work
together to get a job done: email, workflow software, online workspaces, and so forth. These
types of tools are also sometimes referred to as groupware. (Whitsett, 2021)

Online collaboration tools are apps, software programs, or platforms that help businesses and
their people streamline the creative process, and work together more effectively, and efficiently.
Otherwise known as team collaboration tools, they enable managers and employees to assign
tasks, update on progress, report on outcomes and generally improve workflows and
communication, both internally and externally. Popular types of collaboration tools for business
include project management applications, remote conferencing platforms, digital asset
management (DAM) systems, web-based tracking tools, and messaging apps.

John keels this expansion is done by research to see how collaboration tools can improve the
team work of the organization.

1.2 Background of the industry

The supermarket industry refers to the business of selling raw foodstuffs and similar products in
a retail environment. There are a number of different types of businesses within this industry,
usually consisting of markets and grocery stores, which can consist of small operations or large
corporations with numerous locations. The supermarket industry can be considered a part of the
food service industry, though it is often seen as a separate industry since there are a number of
considerations supermarkets have to make that are different than running a restaurant or similar
establishment. Products offered by supermarkets usually include raw foodstuffs, though prepared
foods can also be sold. In many ways, the modern supermarket industry has grown out of the
traditional markets once prevalent in numerous countries. These markets acted as a gathering
place for individual merchants, many of whom were selling their own goods. Such markets were
often open-air establishments in which people could peruse the various fruits, vegetables, meats,
and fish available from farmers, butchers, and fishmongers. Many of these same products are
offered by the supermarket industry, though the process of acquiring and selling these goods has

become more standardized. The supermarket industry is a retail industry in which goods are sold,
and these goods are typically not grown or produced by the businesses involved in operating
supermarkets. Foodstuffs, including produce, dairy products, meats, seafood, and canned goods,
are all provided to supermarkets by other companies or individual growers. Supermarkets then
sell these products to consumers, providing a modern equivalent to the marketplace of the past.
Since the supermarket industry does not control the production of the goods sold within their
retail locations, however, it may have little control over fluctuation in prices of such goods over
time. (Wiesen, 2016)

introduction to the organization

Keells Super is a leading super market chain in Sri Lanka and considered, as one of the three
leading super market chains in the country. Quality and best price is the main strategic concerns
of Keells Super as they are competing, using quality and best price with other two super market
chains; Cargills Food city and Arpico super center. Keells Super is operated by JayKay
Marketing Services (Pvt) Ltd which was established in 1991 under the Ceylon Cold Store PLC
which is managed by John Keells Holdings. Keells Super has its own brands products under the
label of K-Choice. At present Keells Super has 64 super markets which are operating as hyper
markets, small and medium sized supermarkets and Green super markets in 9 districts. The
largest number of super markets are located in Colombo district due to the demographic factors
such as large population, workforce and busy life styles of people. Keells Super records a
revenue growth of 32.1% which is the highest among Cargills and Arpico. That also indicates
Keells Super’s business expansion and as a successful business model. (hamza, 2019)
For the success and the growth of Keells Super, the company’s operation management practices
also have been a reason. Store layouts, capacity management, process designs, and queuing
models etc.; have greater influence on the operations within retail stores, to create positive
customer satisfaction. This report covers the three operations management practices of Keells
Super and its proposed project and project plan for the improvements of operations at retail
stores.

02. LITRTURE REVIWE

02. Literature review

A literature review is a comprehensive summary of previous research on a topic. The literature

review surveys scholarly articles, books, and other sources relevant to a particular area of
research. The review should enumerate, describe, summarize, objectively evaluate and clarify
this previous research.  It should give a theoretical base for the research and help you (the author)
determine the nature of your research.  The literature review acknowledges the work of previous
researchers, and in so doing, assures the reader that your work has been well conceived.  It is
assumed that by mentioning a previous work in the field of study, that the author has read,
evaluated, and assimilated that work into the work at hand. (Coffta, 2010)

2.1Research question

Organizational Support- Organizational Support (POS) refers to employees’ perception

concerning the extent to which the organization values their contribution and cares about their
well-being. POS has been found to have important consequences employee performance and
well-being. Research on perceived organizational support (POS) began with the observation that
if managers are concerned with their employees’ commitment to the organization, employees are
focused on the organization’s commitment to them (Eisenberger, Huntington, Hutchinson, &
Sowa, 1986Organizational support theory (OST: Eisenberger, Huntington, Hutchinson, & Sowa,
1986; Rhoades & Eisenberger, 2002; Shore & Shore, 1995) holds that employees develop POS
in order to meet  needs for approval, esteem and affiliation, and to assess the benefits of
increased work effort. POS increases employees’ felt obligation to help the organization reach its
objectives, their affective commitment to the organization, and their expectation that improved
performance will be rewarded. Behavioral outcomes of POS include increases in in-role and
extra-role performance and decreases in withdrawal behaviors such as absenteeism and turnover.
(Shoss, M., Eisenberger, R., Restubog, S. L. D., & Zagenczyk, T. J., 2013)

System quality-A quality system is defined as the organizational structure, responsibilities,

processes, procedures and resources for implementing quality management. Quality management
includes those aspects of the overall management function that determine and implement the
Company quality policy and quality objectives. Both quality control and quality assurance are
parts of quality management. (Res., 2011)

Group factors- A quotient group or factor group is a mathematical group obtained by aggregating
similar elements of a larger group using an equivalence relation that preserves some of the group
structure. For example, the cyclic group of addition modulo n can be obtained from the group of
integers under addition by identifying elements that differ by a multiple of n and defining a
group structure that operates on each such class as a single entity. It is part of the mathematical
field known as group theory.

03.METHOLOGYCAL RESEARCH

3.1 Research onion

The research onion, developed by Saunders and others, is an easy-to-understand diagram that
shows the various stages that a researcher must take into account, in order to develop an effective
research methodology (Saunders et al, 2012).

o Research Philosophy: Positivism, Interpretivism, Realism

o Research Approaches: Deductive, Inductive
o Research Strategies: Experiment, Survey, Case Study, Grounded Theory, Ethnography,
Observation, Action Research
o Time Horizons: Cross-sectional, Longitudinal,
o Data Collection Methods: Sampling, Secondary Data, Observation, Questionnaire.

Research philosophy for this research work will be based on interpretivism and qualitative
research. The research approach will follow more of a deductive approach where we will start
with a set of theories that are more general in nature, and then move towards understanding
specific areas based on the data collected (Saunders et al, 2012). Basically, we will start with the
bigger picture and try to understand the specifics based on the data collected (mumbai, 2021)

research philosophy- The tern research philosophy refers to a system of beliefs and assumptions
about the development of knowledge. although this sound rather profound.it is precisely what are
doing when embarking on research. The goal of positivism is to produce general rules for
predicting behavior with minimal uncertainty. however, research based on a positive outlook is
based on a reduction theorem, where a number of theories for experiments with empirical
verification are generated. accordingly, positivism is not suitable for this project. Realism
reperch is very similar to positivism but it is an approach that takes into account the subjective
nature of research and the core functionality of its values, and therefor realism may not be
suitable for this research Intuitivism, also known as interpretivist involves resechers to interpret
elements of the study. Thus, interpretivism integrate human interest into a study accordingly the
researcher has chosen intuitivism for this research, which means that it will be more suitable for
this research than other philosophies.

Research approach-Research approach is the approach taken when researching any topic.
Research is basically the search for any kind of knowledge. Research is a human instinct as we
are driven to find out about everything around us. Research approach can be divided into two
types, Decoctive research approach, In deductive research approach. The relevance of
hypotheses the study is the main distinctive pont between deductive approach test the validity of
assumption in hand, whereas inductive approach contributes to the emergence of new theories
and generalizations, abductive research on the other hand starts with surprising facts or puzzles
and the research process is devoted their explanation Alternative the induction approach does not
include assumption makin.it begins with research questions and the goals and objectives to be
achieved in the research process. Accordingly, the indicative approach is not suitable for this
research and the researcher will not select it. The dissertation will formulate a series of
assumptions that must be confirmed or refuted during the research process.in the reduction
approach by adopting a selective follow-up approach. information can be assessed by developing
assumptions that the tested in the research process. Therefore, the researcher will choose the
deductive approach for this.

Strategies -Research strategy’s the main comports of a research project are the research topic
area and focus, research perspective, research planning and research methods, primarily research
includes strategic case studies, qualitative interviews, quantitative surveys and action-oriented
research. Therefore action-oriented interviews are not suitable for this research due to the time
available. research strategies include experimentation, survey, case study and action research-
based theory, ethnography and archive research. include the caser study and survey will be
selected by the researcher.research,, action research grounded theory and ethnography are not
selected because they are not suitable for this research the researcher selects the case study, case
studies usually involves a detailed study of an event(individual or small group)different methods
of data collection and analysis are used but this usually include observations and may include
consulting other individuals and personal or public reports.therefor the researcher has selected
the case study for this research which means that it is suitable for reserch.surveys-surveys
usually involve gathering information form people through a questionnaires but other techniques,
such as can also be used. This questionnaire assesses the information through a select group of
people, so the researcher will provide the information needed for this research using the survey
over time. therefor surveys are suitable.

Choice-Qualitative research is the process of collecting, analyzing and interpreting non-numeric

data such a language. Quality data is defined as non-numeric data such as text, video, photos or
audio recording. These types of interviews can be collected using analysis based on theory or
thematic analysis accordingly, interviews photography or audio recordings cannot be made as
this research is time management based. therefore, qualitative is not suitable for this and it is not
selected by the researcher. Quantitative types of research strategies are the research methods that
involve numbers, hence the root word quantity. These types of research strategies are the ones
that are used in statistical calculations and the like Quantitative research is the process of
collecting and analyzing statistical data.it can be used to find patterns and average to make
predictions, to examine causal relationship and to generalize results to a wider rpopulation.it is
therefore quantitively suitable for this research. Mixed methods research is a mythology for
conducting research that includes qualitative(e.g. focus group, interviweea)quantitative
(experiment, surveys)research collection analysis and interration. This approach will be used it
conduct reserch, both qualitative and quantitative methods are to used for this research .therefore
this is not suitable for research.thuse the researcher uses a mono methods for this.

Time horzend-A time horizon research is a methodology used by the marketers to fulfil the
purpose of effective research design. A useful research methodology is a combination of the
physical, social, and cultural site comprising the research study. For qualitative research,
marketers are primarily concerned about a substantive and accurate approach to the study. Also,
this allows the researchers to study the participants in their natural environment achieving a
better understanding of the research. Thus, to help the researchers get a better understanding of
the subject, time horizon can be categorized in the following two categories. Longitudinal
Study: It follows the concept of interviewing the same sample of people over time repeatedly
due to its longitudinal nature. Cross-Sectional Study: As the name indicates, it studies a fresh
sample of people every time they carry out this research. A study once completed is never
repeated; instead, it emphasizes on using a new sample every time. Thus, the concept of time
horizon research revolves around the significance of these two productive approaches to prepare
an unmatched market strategy. Research methods will timelines for individual research panning.
There are two types of time horizons: longitudinal and cross sectional. long term studies will be
repeated over a long period of time, cross sectnal study is limited to a specific time farme, and
therefore the cross-sectional time horizon is used. This research is not long term and is not
suitable for long term. Accordingly, the researcher has selected cross sectional for this research.

3.2 population and sample

The sample is small fraction the total, subset of the total population.it represents the population
of a study. When surveys are connected, the sample is the members of the population who are
invited to participate in the survey. therefore, a sample is a subgroup or subset of a population.
Thus, sample can be studies to investigate the characteristics or behavior of the overall
population data. Accordingly, the employee population of the company will be selected form a
sample and the research will be done. A as sample types includes quota sampling, objective
sampleing,snowball sampling,self-sectiom sampling, easy sampling simple random,etc.therefor
the researcher has identified that quota sampling objective sampling, snowball sampling and self-
selective sampling are not suitable for this reserch.accordingly, simpal random is suitable for
reperches simple random sample is randomly selected subset of a population.in this sampling
system, every member of the population has exactly the same opportunity. Accordingly using a
simple random sample to make statistic conclusions about employees, the researcher selected a
simple random sample of the research. The population ad sample of employees required for this
are calculated by a Morgan table.

3.3 data collection

Data collection is the process of gathering information from all sources to find answers to
research questions, test hypotheses, and evaluate results. Data collection methods fall into two
categories, namely, secondary methods of data collection and primary methods of data
collection. Secondary data is type of data that is already published in books newspapers,
magazines, journals online portals. the data required for the project can be obtained by various
methods in the analysis. therefore, the methods that can be used can build data through
interviews, observe, questionnaires. but since that project is done according to a data is obtained
through questnnairs as methods of primary data collection. The primary data collection methods
such as interview and observe are not used for this purpose as they are required to project and
retrieve the data on time. This research has about three months to complete.therefor.it uses only a
small amount of data as it has a short time to get the required data. quality studies to ensure a
better understanding and qualitative data collection methods include interviews, open
ended, quizzes, focus group, observations, play or role play, case studies, and more, but not all of
these methods are used for research’s questionnaire in selected by the researcher because the
questionnaires is suitable for this.

3.4 data collection instrument

a questionnaire is a research tool that contains a list of questions requiring responses form a
predefined group of people.it is used to collect relevant information that can help arrive at
definite results during research. Questionnaires are used to collect both qualities and quantitative
data form respondents. Its combines different question types like close-ended and open-ended
questions that allow to extract large when volume of data form respondents, and able to
coordinate data-collection firsthand.

 Accurate and systematic data collection is critical to conducting scientific research

 Data collection allows us to collect information that we want to collect about our study
object
 Depending on research type, methods of data collection include: documents review,
observation, question measuring or combination of different methods.

The methods as the tools which used and analyzing data which relevant to the research study
such as Questionnaires and observations document, government sources and experiments.
According to this research the researcher only using questionnaires to collect the data which
required to concut the research study because this instrument can provide speed respondent
and researcher can select the data without any time delaying when conducting about the
questionnaires. There are many kind of questionnaires which can use for but this researcher
is making the questionnaires by using 5.likerts scale.

3.6 data analysis

Data analytics is a broad field. There are four primary types of data analytics: descriptive,
diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive analytics. Each type has a different goal and a different
place in the data analysis process. These are also the primary data analytics applications in
business. Descriptive analytics helps answer questions about what happened. These techniques
summarize large datasets to describe outcomes to stakeholders. By developing key performance
indicators these strategies can help track successes or failures. Metrics such as return on
investment (ROI) are used in many industries. Specialized metrics are developed to track
performance in specific industries. This process requires the collection of relevant data,
processing of the data, data analysis and data visualization. This process provides essential
insight into past performance. Diagnostic analytics helps answer questions about why things
happened. These techniques supplement more basic descriptive analytics. They take the findings
from descriptive analytics and dig deeper to find the cause. The performance indicators are
further investigated to discover why they got better or worse. This generally occurs in three
steps: Identify anomalies in the data. These may be unexpected changes in a metric or a
particular market, Data that is related to these anomalies is collected, Statistical techniques are
used to find relationships and trends that explain these anomalies.

3.7 reliability, vailidity and generalizability

Reliability- When we examine a construct in a study, we choose one of a number of possible
ways to measure that construct [see the section on Constructs in quantitative research, if you are
unsure what constructs are, or the difference between constructs and variables]. For example, we
may choose to use questionnaire items, interview questions, and so forth. These questionnaire
items or interview questions are part of the measurement procedure. This measurement
procedure should provide an accurate representation of the construct it is measuring if it is to be
considered valid. For example, if we want to measure the construct, intelligence, we need to have
a measurement procedure that accurately measures a person's intelligence. Since there are many
ways of thinking about intelligence (e.g., IQ, emotional intelligence, etc.), this can make it
difficult to come up with a measurement procedure that has strong validity [see the
article: Construct validity (Middleton., 2019)

Validity- The concept of validity is described by a wide range of terms in qualitative studies.
This concept is not a single, fixed or universal concept, but “rather a contingent construct,
inescapably grounded in the processes and intentions of particular research methodologies and
projects” (Winter, 2000, p.1). Although some qualitative researchers have argued that the term
validity is not applicable to qualitative research, but at the same time, they have realized the need
for some kind of qualifying check or measure for their research. For example, Creswell & Miller
(2000) suggest that the validity is affected by the researcher’s perception of validity in the study
and his/her choice of paradigm assumption. As a result, many researchers have developed their
own concepts of validity and have often generated or adopted what they consider to be more
appropriate terms, such as, quality, rigor and trustworthiness (millen, 2021)

Generalizability- Generalizability in qualitative research has been a controversial topic given

that interpretivist scholars have resisted the dominant role and mandate of the positivist tradition
within social sciences. Aiming to find universal laws, the positivist paradigm has made
generalizability a crucial criterion for evaluating the rigor of quantitative research. This positivist
echo has led generalizability to acquire a quantitative meaning, inappropriate for describing
qualitative studies. The purpose of qualitative research has, thus, been directed toward providing
in-depth explanations and meanings rather than generalizing findings. Through a critical review
of empirical and theoretical studies, this commentary seeks to show that in qualitative domains,
generalizability is possible provided that, first, generalizability is the main objective of the study;
second, due precautions concerning the philosophy and terminology selected are taken. Hence,
this commentary contributes to the literature on qualitative research by making suggestions for
more consistent and unanimous procedures to adopt in qualitative inquiries (kistina, 2020).

3.8 ethical consideration

Ethical Considerations can be specified as one of the most important parts of the research.
Dissertations may even be doomed to failure if this part is missing. According to Bryman and
Bell (2007) the following ten points represent the most important principles related to ethical
considerations in dissertations: Research participants should not be subjected to harm in any
ways whatsoever ,Respect for the dignity of research participants should be prioritized, Full
consent should be obtained from the participants prior to the study, The protection of the privacy
of research participants has to be ensured, Adequate level of confidentiality of the research data
should be ensured Anonymity of individuals and organizations participating in the research has
to be ensured. Any deception or exaggeration about the aims and objectives of the research must
be avoided, affiliations in any forms, sources of funding, as well as any possible conflicts of
interests have to be declared, any type of communication in relation to the research should be
done with honesty and transparency Any type of misleading information, as well as
representation of primary data findings in a biased way must be avoided.
respondents must attend with informed consent. The principle of informed consent includes
providing the researcher with adequate information and understanding of the implications of
participation, and ensuring that participates are fully informed, considered and feely informed
about whether or not to do so without any pressure. Prevent the use of abusive or other
unacceptable language in the preparation of question papers or use easy way for everyone,
failure to obtain sponsors attention for this project, doing so without causing harm when
obtaining company permission, participates cannot be compelled to obtain information and it
must be done at their discretion, data security needs to be considered and methods for storing
them need to be developed.

3.9 role of the researcher

The role of the researcher in qualitative research is to try to again access to the throughs and
feelings to the study participatns.however, while collecting data, the primary responsibility of the
researcher is to project participants and their data.resercher here are the employees builds data on
practicality and idinficifation.the google form has been used to provide information. The
researcher has taken steps to build the information within three months of the research. because
this research is an individual research, the time and cost involve the researcher has worked to
manage one. The required data is arranged in a convenient way for each employee in a short
period of time through a questionnaire among the selected employees through a Morgan table.it
uses both primary and secondary data collection methods to obtain maximum data from primary
data via queastinnaire.the researcher asses all the data and conduct this research according to the
limitations. In the research study of the study on the effect of collaboration tools on improving
team work in the organization to the john Keells in an individual research report .the researcher
of doing the research project player a major role a project manager doing all th project task
without team. The researcher who making than research make as an unbiased researcher

04.PRACTICABILITY AND THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE CONSTRAINTS

4.1 Practicability

Information is required for the research proposal. The researcher is selecting questionnaire
methods for gathering primary data from employees who are the working in the john keels. Dut
because of the covid situation which is happening those days. This researcher face difficulty to
visit the company because of some of health and safety conditions which following by the
company during this pandemic situation. If the researcher wants to collect the data from the
employee by visiting the company it can be take long time. Therefore, this researcher is making
google from questionnaires to collect the data by email it to the employee and collect be data
which want to do this research. This method is very useful method which using by researcher to
access the data which required to make this research successfully.

4.2 identification of constriction

Cost

Time data access

Time

It is very important that the researcher has a time limit for submitting the research proposal, so
that all the information should be collected and analyzed and the research should be completed
within the stipulated time. Therefore, the researcher is selected the Colombo head office of the
john Keells because they are only 1000 employees as working there and also according to the
Morgan table the researcher has to collect data from only 278 who employees has working in the
company. Therefore, the researcher can gather the required data using the selected small number
of employees in the Colombo outlet and complete the research successfully in a short period of
time.

Cost

Cost is a key factor in research studies. Cost is most important unit for the researcher who doing
the research study because every researcher can make a successful research project if there are
any chance to reduce the cost of the researcher can reduce either the scope of the research or
increase the time period of the research project. According to this research, the researcher
selected the Colombo outlets of the branch network of the john keels holdings for gathering
required data easily and without censuring very high amount of cost therefore this researcher
makes successful research by using effective cost by choosing the company which is situational
in the Colombo area. Due to the current epidemic situation, it is possible to do this at a lower
cost.

Data access

The way of success the data which required to the research is most important as well as time and
cost of research because according to this study researcher has to do this research within the
about time period. Therefore, this researcher using the branch which situated in the Colombo
area to collect the data within the short time period and with the small amount of cost
additionally to those think to collect to data within the short time period and without any branch
visits. This researcher able to increase the quality of the research by using the right dose access
methods.
