Background

It has been observed that learners are abusing drugs and substances in schools. A situation which is affecting them academically, socially and
health wise.

The CALA

The CALA has two separate parts, Part A and B. You are required to complete all parts.
Part A

You are required to go into your community and:

i. collect data on the most commonly abused drug and substance.


ii. conduct a research on the causes of drug and substance abuse by learners in schools.
iii. collect data on the effects of drug and substance abuse to learners.
iv. research on possible ways of minimising drug and substance abuse in schools.

Part B

Using information from A, write a speech on drug and substance abuse. You are to present the speech at school, to your fellow schoolmates.

How you will be assessed

• To assess your CALA, your facilitator will consider your research material and your write up.
• Achievement standards specific to this CALA will be provided so that you are aware of the assessment criteria.

• As you carry out your research, remember to write notes, use ICT tools or make recordings.
• You can read your notes about the topic.

CALA Context

It has been observed that learners are abusing drugs and substance in schools. A situation which is affecting them academically, socially and health
wise.

CALA Description

To make you aware of the causes and effects of drug and substance abuse as well as enhancing your communication skills.

• prepare questions that you are going to use for your interviews to collect data. (10)

• record responses. (10)

• write a speech clearly highlighting the causes and effects of drug abuse suggesting possible ways of minimizing drug and substance abuse
in schools. (20)

How you will be assessed


The CALA will be assessed out of 40. The facilitator will assess:

• your interview questions.


• notes from interviews.
• evidence of interviews and research
• submitted write up.

Marks will be given for your answers. Take note that mistakes in spellings, grammar and punctuation may be penalised in any part of the CALA.

In your research questions consider:
